    Overview of English Bible translations Amplified Bible The Amplified Bible showed the verbal equivalence and amplification of word meanings in the text. It started in 1965 and is revised in 1987. Mostly used in charismatic circles, because of the lack of greek and Hebrew teachings from the pastors. Common English Bible (CEB) The Common English Bible is not simply a revision or update of an existing translation. It is a bold new translation designed to meet the needs of Christians as they work to build a strong and meaningful relationship with God through Jesus Christ. A key goal of the translation team was to make the Bible accessible to a broad range of people; it’s written at a comfortable level for over half of all English readers. As the translators did their work, reading specialists working with seventy-seven reading groups from more than a dozen denominations review the texts to ensure a smooth and natural reading experience. Easy readability can enhance church worship and participation, and personal Bible study. It also encourages children and youth to discover the Bible for themselves, perhaps for the very first time. CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH BIBLE (CEV) A rendering of the intent of the Hebrew and Greek text published in 1995 by the American Bible Society. It uses inclusive gender language and is sensitive to concerns over Jewish sensitivities. There is some controversy over this version's claim to contain no anti-Judaism since there are biblical texts which seem, in the original, to express such sentiments. The interpretive translation strategy eliminates these and sometimes masks the language of the original writer.

    English Bible Translations: Making Some Sense of the Possibilities By Bob Young Recently, I was asked to write something about available English Bible translations. It is not possible to say something about every available English translation, so I will comment on the most popular translations. Because I recently received a question about the Lexham English Bible (LEB), I will also comment briefly on that work. Today a vast number of different translations (versions) of the Bible are available, many electronically. One who is serious about reading and studying the Bible has more resources available than ever to make a good, informed decision about what translations to use. While it may be true that one can read almost any translation to learn what to do to go to heaven, that does not mean that all translations are created equal or are of equal value or accuracy. I recognize that one may wish to read from different versions to grow in one’s knowledge of the Word. I try to read the Bible—at least the New Testament—from a different version each year. Nevertheless, it is generally best to choose one Bible for serious Bible reading and study. What Bible should that be? For preachers, the ideal is to work with the original language texts. That means Hebrew for the Old Testament and Greek for the New Testament. I am increasingly concerned about the number of quotations I hear in sermons from various English versions. I am concerned because in some cases the quotation from a popular version does not reflect the true teaching of the passage cited.

Near the end of his life, Moses blesses each of the tribes of Israel. Verse 12, the benediction on the tribe of Benjamin, is an a!rmation of safety that may have geographical as well as symbolic meaning. Kātēf, the Hebrew term rendered shoulders in this verse, can refer to the slope of a hill or mountainside. Because Zion, where Jehovah was believed to dwell, was in the land of Benjamin, some scholars see shoulders as an allusion to that habitation. One writes, “Jehovah is here said to dwell between Benjamin’s shoulders, i.e., mountain slopes.” Most sources, though, link the word shoulders with God’s protection rather than Benjamin’s location. And while they may view shoulders in a bodily way—as a child is held close to a parent’s chest or on a parent’s back—the metaphor imparts a sense of God’s protecting presence. This assertion is underscored by the Hebrew verb rendered cover (hāpap), signifying overshadow. from the Responsive Reading 1 Psalms 18:19 He brought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me. In Psalms, God’s salvation is described as bringing His children into a broad or expansive space (see 31:8; 118:5).

Pros: easy to identify certain words that recur in the original language. Cons: sometimes difficult to understand, especially when rendering Hebrew/Greek idioms. Thought for Thought (Dynamic; Functional Equivalence): Translates the Hebrew/Greek phrases or concepts into modern English, changing the wording as needed to convey the idea accurately. Pros: easy to read and understand. Cons: harder to identify specific words that appear in various places; may involve a degree of interpretation on the part of the translators. Paraphrase (Free): Renders the biblical text in contemporary, colloquial English, focusing entirely on the concepts conveyed by the text with little attention to preserving the wording or vocabulary.     In the 2010-2013 Triennium, the Faith, Worship, and Ministry Committee undertook a study of a the new translation of the Bible published as the Common English Bible, which they then commended for use in personal devotion and study. During the course of this work, it became apparent that it is not well known that there is a list of Bible versions which are authorized for use in public worship in the Anglican Church of Canada. The English translations so authorized are: New Revised Standard Version Revised English Bible King James (Authorized Version) 1611 Revised Standard Version 1952 (and its revision as Common Bible) New American Bible 1970 Today's English Version (Good News) 1976 New International Version 1978 New Jerusalem 1985 The most used French translation of the Bible is the Traduction oecuménique de la bible, or TOB. The recent translation of the Bible into Inuktitut is cause for celebration across the whole church. Many other language translations are in use across the country. The following article is a reflection on the Bible as a 'translation' book, with particular attention to the English translations that have been authorized for use for public worship in the Anglican Church of Canada, and is offered for reflection.     about the CEB The King James Version of the Bible was published in 1611. For two centuries the KJV competed for readership with the Geneva Bible. However, by the nineteenth century in America, the KJV would be described as the “common English Bible,” because it was the most widely used translation of Christian scripture. Numerous translations have appeared since that time. However, it has proved difficult to combine concern for accuracy and accessibility in one translation that the typical reader or worshipper would be able to understand. Therefore, readers in the twenty-first century, four hundred years after the creation of the KJV, need and deserve a new translation that is suitable for personal devotion, for communal worship, and for classroom study. The Common English Bible (CEB), completed in 2011, is a fresh translation of the Bible. Some editions include the books of the Apocrypha that are used in Anglican, Orthodox, and Catholic congregations. The translation is sponsored by the Common English Bible Committee, which is an alliance of denominational publishers, including Presbyterian (USA), Episcopalian, United Methodist, Disciples of Christ, and United Church of Christ representatives. One hundred twenty biblical scholars from twenty-two faith traditions worked as translators for the CEB. In addition, members of seventy-seven reading groups from congregations throughout North America reviewed and responded to early drafts of the translation. As a result, more than five hundred individuals were integrally involved in the preparation of the CEB. These individuals represent the sorts of diversity that permit this new translation to speak to people of various religious convictions and different social locations.
