Timothy Gross (May 2009) and the addendum to that report, prepared by Mary Robbins-Wade of HELIX Environmental Planning, Inc. (HELIX) in January 2015. This letter report was prepared in response to a request from City of San Diego (City) staff that an archaeologist and a Native American monitor assess the current condition of the cultural resources within the project site. The proposed project design has not changed since the 2009 submittal. Site conditions within the project footprint have not changed, and the proposed data recovery plan is still adequate to mitigate potential project impacts, as described below. BACKGROUND The Roselle Street project (project) is located within the significant archaeological and cultural resource site known as Ystagua (CA-SDI-4609). The property is located on Roselle Street in Sorrento Valley, in the City of San Diego, in western San Diego County. The parcel is on the alluvial flats along Carroll Canyon Creek in Soledad Canyon, at the end of Roselle Street, although some of the steep valley wall is included in the eastern portion of the property, as well. On July 23, 2009, the project property was designated by the City’s Historical Resources Board (HRB) as HRB Site #924, Village of Ystagua Area #1. -

True throughout his career was the California Milling Stone Horizon, the artifact complex dominated by handstones, millingslabs, and crude core tools most frequently associated with the early Holocene in southern California. The basic Milling Stone pattern, identified in 1929 by David Banks Rogers in the Santa Barbara Channel and formally defined by Treganza (1950) and Wallace (1955), was brought to the attention of American archaeologists outside of California by Wallace (1954) and True (1958). Over the next 30 years, D. L. True authored a number ofarticles and reports on Milling Stone (Basgall and True 1985; True 1980; True and Baumhoff 1982, 1985; True and Beemer 1982; True et al. 1979) in which he described regional variants and refined the typological definitions ofimportant artifacts. Also during this period, D. L. was not shy about bringing Milling Stone into the seminar room, often forcing theoretically-oriented archaeology students of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s to acknowledge their inability to distinguish artifacts from non-artifacts. -

I am not sure which archaeologist first used that word. It seems that the first documented but unpublished use is from 1874 or 1875 (Haury 1976:5). In any case, since around then archaeologists have used their methods to define and explain the origin, development, geographic extent, and end of the Hohokam culture. This article is not about the archaeologists’ Hohokam, but about the stories and explanations of past peoples as told by the three Native American tribes who either grew from or replaced the archaeologists’ Hohokam on former Hohokam land. These are the O’odham, of course, but also the Maricopa and Yavapai. The Maricopa during European times (since about 1550) lived on lands previously occupied by the Hohokam and Patayan archaeological cultures, and the Yavapai lived on lands of the older Hohokam, Patayan, Hakataya, Salado, and Western Anasazi cultures – to use all of the names that have been used, sometimes overlappingly, for previous cultures of the region. The Stories The O’odham word huhugkam means “something that is used up or finished.” The word consists of the verb huhug, which means “to be used up or finished,” and the suffix “-kam,” which means “something that is this way.” Huhug is generally, and perhaps only, used as an intransitive, not a transitive, verb. -

Watson Smith Introduction The descendents of the prehistoric peoples who lived in the Southwest of the United States fifteen hundred years ago, the Pueblo Indians have to this day preserved their identity and rich culture despite the assaults of Euro-American civilization. If certain traditional forms of Pueblo life seem to have changed little from, for example, ten centuries ago, it is because, for the Pueblo, religion and ritual have been inseparable from social life. Their religion has protected them from the encroachment of outside influences. Among the Pueblo Indians, the Hopi have changed least of all. It is generally agreed that the Hopi have been able to preserve their way of life due to their creed, known as the “Kachina cult.” While this Kachina cult on the one hand reflects the Hopi’s dependence on agriculture for survival in a dry and rugged climate, it has functioned, on the other hand, as a crucial element in the preservation and assertion of their identity and culture. This article takes a closer look at the Kachina cult, through a discussion of its beliefs, of the artifacts such as masks and Kachina dolls, of the nature of the Kachinas as spiritual beings and as fertility providers, and of the Hopi Kachina ceremonies that make use of these artifacts and philosophies. -

The Blue House: The Intimate Universe of Frida Kahlo “Never in life will I forget your presence. You found me torn apart and you took me back full and complete.” Frida Kahlo By delving into the knowledge of Frida Kahlo's legacy, one discovers the intense relationship that exists between Frida, her work and her home. Her creative universe is to be found in the Blue House, the place where she was born and where she died. Following her marriage to Diego Rivera, Frida lived in different places in Mexico City and abroad, but she always returned to her family home in Coyoacan. Located in one of the oldest and most beautiful neighborhoods in Mexico City, the Blue House was made into a museum in 1958, four years after the death of the painter. Today it is one of the most visited museums in the Mexican capital. Popularly known as the Casa Azul (the ‘Blue House’), the Museo Frida Kahlo preserves the personal objects that reveal the private universe of Latin America’s most celebrated woman artist. The Blue House also contains some of the painter’s most important works: Long Live Life (1954), Frida and the Caesarian Operation (1931), and Portrait of My Father Wilhelm Kahlo (1952), among others. In the room she used during the day is the bed with the mirror on the ceiling, set up by her mother after the bus accident in which Frida was involved on her way home from the National Preparatory School. During her long convalescence, while she was bedridden for nine months, Frida began to paint portraits. -
