  • Kane's Urmila: a Relevant Feminist Myth Creation
Poonam Sharma, Nitin Bhatnagar, Turkish Online Journal of Qualitative Inquiry (TOJQI) Volume 12, Issue 7, July 2021: 3905 - 3911 Research Article Kane’s Urmila: A Relevant Feminist Myth Creation Poonam Sharma, Research Scholar, Department of English, GLA University, Mathura. E-mail: [email protected] Nitin Bhatnagar, Professor, Department of English, GLA University, Mathura. E-mail:[email protected] ABSTRACT The epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata have been an integral part of the Indian cultural tradition. Since centuries, they have been told and reinterpreted several times and handed down from one generation to another. The Ramayana is based on the morals such as the triumph of goodness over evil, obedience, brotherhood, love, compassion, sacrifice – all looped into the thread of Indian cultural tradition with an emphasizes on the value of dharma. However, there are some female characters that have been left on the margin in this epic and have been portrayed as upholders of male honour. They are devoid of the proper attention for their roles and sacrifices they deserve. Kavita Kane in her novel, Sita’s Sister has revisited the Ramayana from the daring and unwavering Urmila’s (Laxmana’s wife) perspective – a marginalized character who has never received the responsiveness she is worthy of. Kane has given voice to the muted character of Urmila. The present paper studies the contemporary relevance of Sita’s Sister from feminist- revisionist myth-making point of view. Key Words: Ramayana; Re-vision; margin; Indian culture; feminist- revisionist myth-making. Introduction Kavita Kane, an Indian writer, known for her mythology-fiction, has written books based on retellings of Indian myths.

सीता राम बाबा Sītā Rāma Bābā סִיטָ ה רְ אַמָ ה בָבָ ה Bābā بَابَا He had a crippled leg and was on crutches. He tried to speak to us in broken English. His name was Sita Ram Baba. He sat there with his begging bowl in hand. Unlike most Sadhus, he had very high self- esteem. His eyes lit up when we bought him some ice-cream, he really enjoyed it. He stayed with us most of that evening. I videotaped the whole scene. Churchill, Pola (2007-11-14). • Urmila Devi – the Unsung Heroine of the Ramayana
Urmila Devi ± The Unsung heroine of the Ramayana Sita-devi was an adopted daughter of Maharaja Janaka and Maharani Sunanya. He had found a baby `Sita' while ploughing the land for a yagna (fire sacrifice/havan). Urmila on the other hand was the biological daughter of Maharaja Janaka and Maharani Sunanya. She was younger to Sita-devi by a few years. She was betrothed to Lakshmana when Lord Raam and Sita-devi's marriage was fixed When Lord Raam broke Lord's Shiva's bow He immediately became the person eligible to marry Sita-devi. Next, Maharaja Dasharath came to Maharaja Janaka's kingdom of Mithila to talk about the wedding dates and time. This was the time when Rajkumari Urmila was betrothed to Rajkumar Lakshmana. Both Sita-devi and Urmila were married to Lord Raam and Lord Lakshmana on the same day. She Wanted to Accompany Lakshmana during the 14 Year Exile, but Lakshmana refused her wish. According to Valmiki's Ramayana, Urmila was all set to accompany her husband along with her sister Sita-devi and brother-in-law Lord Raam when the trio was leaving for the forest. However, Lakshmana advised her to stay back to take good care of her in- laws. Further stating it he is going to the forest as a slave of his brother where he will be busy serving them and will have no time to look after her or even care for her. He begged her to stay back and Urmila reluctantly had to agree her husbands request. She remained asleep for 14 Years so that Lakshman could fulfill His duty attentively One the very first night of the exile, Lord Raam and Sita-devi went to sleep in the forest while Lakshman kept a watch on them.

  • Ramayan Ki Kathayen, Pandemic and the Hindu Way of Life and the Contribution of Hindu Women, Amongst Others
Hindu Sevika Samiti (UK) Mahila Shibir 2020 East and South Midlands Vibhag FOREWORD INSPIRING AND UNPRECEDENTED INITIATIVE In an era of mass consumerism - not only of material goods - but of information, where society continues to be led by dominant and parochial ideas, the struggle to make our stories heard, has been limited. But the tides are slowly turning and is being led by the collaborative strength of empowered Hindu women from within our community. The Covid-19 pandemic has at once forced us to cancel our core programs - which for decades had brought us together to pursue our mission to develop value-based leaders - but also allowed us the opportunity to collaborate in other, more innovative ways. It gives me immense pride that Hindu Sevika Samiti (UK) have set a new precedent for the trajectory of our work. As a follow up to the successful Mahila Shibirs in seven vibhags attended by over 500 participants, 342 Mahila sevikas came together to write 411 articles on seven different topics which will be presented in the form of seven e-books. I am very delighted to launch this collection which explores topics such as: The uniqueness of Bharat, Ramayan ki Kathayen, Pandemic and the Hindu way of life and The contribution of Hindu women, amongst others. From writing to editing, content checking to proofreading, the entire project was conducted by our Sevikas. This project has revealed hidden talents of many mahilas in writing essays and articles. We hope that these skills are further encouraged and nurtured to become good writers which our community badly lacks.

  • Urmila: the Depiction of Sacrifices of Less Known Character of Ramayana RADHA D R1 Dr
AEGAEUM JOURNAL ISSN NO: 0776-3808 Urmila: The depiction of sacrifices of less known character of Ramayana RADHA D R1 Dr. PREMALATHA. S2 Research Scholar Assistant Professor REVA University, REVA University, Bangalore. Bangalore. [email protected] [email protected] Ph.no-9986902244 Ph.no-8123730963 Abstract: The Ramayana and Mahabharata are two major epics. The characters of Ram, Sita and Lakshman are very popular among people but Urmila’s character is not highlighted though she sacrificed her whole life for the sake of family. She is known as Sita’s sister or Lakshman’s wife, she didn’t get any special treatment in Mithila even though she is a real princess of Mithila because her parents treated their adopted sister Sita and Urmila in the same way. Sita was very fortunate to have complete attention of her parents but Urmila never felt jealous or hatred with Sita. She loved her unconditionally. In the time of Exile Sita and Lakshman accompanied Ram to the forest but Urmila spent longest fourteen years in the absence of her husband in the doomed palace. She is very courageous and strong, she had taken a responsibility of family management when it needed her the most but her sacrifices and pain is never stressed anywhere in Ramayana. Urmila was a strong pillar in the palace, she used to convince and comfort her family members as they were very sad due to the exile of Ram. She has assisted her brother-in-law Shatrughna in administration as she is very intelligent and brave. She didn’t leave anyone if she finds something is bad and unethical.

  • Writing „Otherness‟: Revisiting Unheard Women of Mythology in Selected Contemporary Narratives
(IJESIR) International Journal of Science and Innovative Research e-ISSN: 2724-3338 2021, 02(04) https://www.ijesir.org Paper id: 0100043IJESIR Writing „Otherness‟: Revisiting Unheard Women of Mythology in Selected Contemporary Narratives Kiran B.Mamgain* , Simranjyot Kour DIT University, Dehradun, Uttarakhand-248009, India *Corresponding Author: [email protected] ARTICLE INFO ABSTRACT Received: 25.03.2021 Mythology has always been a part of our collective unconsciousness. The famous Indian epics are always used Accepted: 15.04.2021 in contemporary narratives to present the characters that are seen as demonic or fragile but led a life that goes Final Version: 27.04.2021 unnoticed. However, while writing such epics, there are voices that are often left unheard and not paid much heed, to name a few like Ahalya, Urmila, Vrinda, Mandodri and Shilavati. The paper explores the voices of unheard characters given a voice in the contemporary narratives with the aim to revisit the mythology through their lens. The study primarily focuses on the exploration of society‟s repeated attempts to uphold the male/female, masculine/feminine, polarization and subjugation through Kavita Kane‟s Sita’s Sister and Lanka’s Princess. The derelict and often distorted image of the two characters: Urmila (Lakshman‟s wife) and Surpanakha (Ravana‟s sister) is explored and analyzed to show that mythology in contemporary fiction gives rise to the unheard voices that are rarely discussed and widely forgotten. Revisiting mythology thereupon gives voice to the quite characters in the epics. The objective of the paper is to relate to the present issues of society like gender discrimination and insecurity based on looks and skin color, feminism and violence by intertwining through the mythological representation of the characters.
