Reference Description Date Portsmouth College of Education (1907- 1976) Ref: EDUC University Archives, Special Collections University Library, Cambridge Road, Portsmouth, PO1 2ST Administrative History Former Names 1907-1914 Portsmouth Day Training College; 1914-1926 Portsmouth Municipal Training College; 1926-1965 City of Portsmouth Training College; Principals: Miss Edith L. White 1907-1932; Dorothy Dymond 1932 to 1956; D. Jean Williams (nee Phillips) 1957-1976 The college was all-female until 1949 when men were admitted for the first time on the new Third Year History Course. The Training College was initially based in temporary accommodation in the playground of Francis Avenue School. From September 1908 it moved to the Municipal College (now Park Building). Student accommodation was available at a number of residential hostels such as Ravenscourt in Elm Grove, Ermington in Victoria Road, Heidelberg in Albany Road, Souldern House in Lennox Road, and at 6 Sussex Terrace and 85 Elm Grove. Foster Hall, Milton Road opened in 1916 on land that had belonged to the Goldsmith family including the former location of Milton Farm. This large purpose built building replaced the previously dispersed hostels. Due to lack of space for expansion at the Municipal College, a new teaching building was then opened on the Milton site in 1939. The College was first evacuated to Homerton College in Cambridge in late 1939, returning in October 1940. However, following the raid on 10 January 1941 the Foster Hall students were evacuated again, this time to Bishop Otter College in Chichester. Day students remained in Portsmouth whilst nurses from St Mary’s Hospital and the Dockyard school used Foster Hall as their own premises were unavailable. All students returned to Portsmouth January 1945. Further student residences Blake Hall and Lapthorn, which was located on the corner of Lennox Road South and Auckland Road East were opened in 1946. On 24 April 1964 the Furze Lane site opened at Langstone with accommodation for 300 extra students in Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hall (QEQM Hall), plus teaching and recreational space. The college merged with Portsmouth Polytechnic on 1 April 1976. Foster Hall and the Milton Road campus were demolished in 2004.
