OPENING REMARKS VICE PRES I DENT HUBERT H. HUMPHREY DEPARTMENT OF STATE NATIONAL FOREIGN POLl CY CONFERENCE FOR EDITORS AND BROADCASTERS APRIL 28, 1966 I am delighted to have the opportunity of spending some time today with so many of the people who do so much to make the American people the best informed public in the world. The fact that several hundred of you, from all parts of the country, have gone to the trouble and expense to be here today testifies to the seriousness with which you view your res(X>nsibilities. -2- It indicates the attention which all Americans today are giving to the world around them. I agree with President Eisenhower that "what we ca I foreign affairs is no longer foreign affairs; it's a local affair. Whatever happens in Indonesia is important to Indiana • • • • We can not escape each other." For two decades the power and purpose of the United States have helped contain totalitarian expansion around the world. But this has not been our only aim. We have, in President Kennedy's phrase, sought ''to make the world safe for diversity" ••• to make Slf e that no one nation or group of nations ever gains the right to define world order, let alone to manage it. But diversity must , in this nuclear age, be accompanied by safety. -3- The threat to both diversity and safety in post-war Europe was clear and visible. Today -- in large part because of the success of our post-war policies -- the threat to Europe has receded. There are still threats to diversity and safety in the world, but they are not so simple and direct as was the post-war challenge in Europe.

PICADOR TEACHER’S GUIDE This I Believe The Personal Philosophies of Remarkable Men and Women Edited by Jay Allison and Dan Gediman Foreword by Studs Terkel “My father, Edward R. Murrow, said that ‘fresh ideas’ from others helped him confront his own challenges. This superb collection of thought-provoking 304 pages • 978-0-8050-8658-4 This I Believe essays, both from the new program heard on NPR and from the original 1950s series, provides fresh ideas for all.” —Casey Murrow, Education Publisher TO THE TEACHER Based on the popular National Public Radio series of the same name, This I Believe features eighty different statements of individual principles from the famous and unknown alike. Each essay candidly and compellingly completes the thought that begins this book’s title. Further, each piece invites all readers to rethink not only how they have arrived at their own personal beliefs but also the extent to which they share these beliefs with others. Featuring many well-known contributors—including Isabel Allende, Colin Powell, Gloria Steinem, Bill Gates, and John Updike—the collection also contains words of wisdom from a Brooklyn lawyer; a part-time hospital clerk from Rehoboth, Massachusetts; a woman who sells Yellow Pages advertising in Fort Worth, Texas; and a man who serves on the Rhode Island Parole Board. Also presented are several remarkably up-to-the-minute essays from the original This I Believe CBS Radio series, created in the 1950s by legendary journalist Edward R. Murrow. This I Believe thus presents the hearts and minds of a diverse group of people, both past and present, whose beliefs reveal the American spirit at its best.

Short running header BOJKO ET AL. • SEQUENCE OF INTERSECTING LINES Color versions of the figures can be found online at www.blackwellsynergy.com 2 ABSTRACT: In this study, the potential of attenuated total reflectance – Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectral imaging as a technique to determine the sequence of line crossings was examined. The technique was successful in determining the sequence of heterogeneous line intersections produced using ballpoint pens and laser printers. By imaging at characteristic frequencies, it was possible to form spectral images showing the spatial distribution of the materials. By examining the spectral images from the inks, it was possible to determine whether the ink was above or below the toner. In blind testing, ATR-FTIR spectral imaging results were directly compared to those obtained by eight experienced forensic document examiners using methods regularly employed in casework.
