    Genre Shift and Identity Maintenance – An Analysis of Iranian War Film Genres (1980_2013) with Niklas Luhmann’s Social Systems Theory Golnaz Sarkar Farshi* Received: 2018/01/15 Accepted: 2018/08/11 Abstract A close observation of Iran-Iraq war films in the Iranian society reveals that their genres have shifted in the course of the society’s evolution. This questions the category-based principles of genre we have known so far in literature concerning film theory and necessitates a new conceptualization of genre, which can be realized with the aid of Niklas Luhmann’s social systems theory. This theory abandons categorization in favor of functional differentiation and helps us observe Iranian war movies in their societal context. By taking a close look at the function of film in the society as one of the mass media, and through locating the concepts of memory, reality, identity and genre in Luhmann’s theory, I shall find a pattern in the mentioned genre shift which is in turn punctuated by the Iranian society’s different stages of evolution. A bald-headed man with an exotic-looking moustache looks out at us from a magazine cover. The face, taken from a Baroque period portrait, is shown wearing a modern white-collar shirt. ‘How Polish is a Pole?’ the heading asks.2 Clearly, the ugly, round, bewhiskered face is meant to represent a stereotypical native of Poland (Figure 1). This cover of the popular weekly Wprost provides a perfect example of the use of a Sarmat figure in the twenty-first-century mass media. Medieval Period Jews inhabited Poland since at least the tenth century when, fleeing persecution in German territories, they made their way east.2 One legend recounts that a scrap of paper directed them to “Polaniaya,” a Hebrew name for Poland, which they interpreted as meaning “Here God dwells.” They arrived in a forest where they heard the word Polin, another Hebrew name for Poland, which they interpreted as “Po-lin,” “Rest here.” In some versions [of the legend], a cloud broke and an angel’s hand pointed the way and a voice said “Po-lin.” According to [another] version […], Jews entering the forest discovered tractates of the Talmud carved on the trees; in other versions, pages of the sacred texts floated down.3 This story begins in a town called Teschen (called Cieszyn both before and after the time of this narrative) was populated by Slavic peoples by at least the seventh century.

    Fragmented Allegories of National Authenticity: Art and Politics of the Iranian New Wave Cinema, 1960-79 by Farbod Honarpisheh Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2016 © 2016 Farbod Honarpisheh All rights reserved Abstract Fragmented Allegories of National Authenticity: Art and Politics of the Iranian New Wave Cinema, 1960-79 Farbod Honarpisheh The New Wave (Moj-e Now), as the rather large body of “quality films” made in Iran before the 1979 revolution came to be known, forms the main thematic concern of this study. From start to end, however, this primary track of investigation is opened up to other mediums of cultural production: modernist Persian fiction and poetry, the visual arts scene, the discourse on ethnography and “folklore studies,” and the critical texts produced by public intellectuals. The second main theme coming to the fore is the intersection of the emergent “discourse of authenticity,” the Iranian intellectuals’ growing demand for “cultural rootedness,” and the production of modernist aesthetics in literature, arts, and cinema. Introduced early in the text, the idea of “modernism of uneven development” provides the theoretical frame for this project; the recurrences of the hypothesis, particularly as it pertains to a temporal divide between the city and the countryside, are discerned and analysed. The Iranian New Wave Cinema, I contend, always showed an ethnographic register, as it too was after worlds and times deemed as vanishing. This “movement” in cinematic modernism first emerged from within the documentary mode, which began to flourish in Iran from the 1960s.
