Inspired by the idea that to learn how to make movies, one must actually make movies, Sherlock and his colleagues designed a truly unique curriculum. Blending a mixture of traditional film school instruction with a new approach, the Academy emphasizes coursework based around students actually going out and shooting films as part of their coursework. Students write, produce, direct, and edit their own original films while also serving as crewmembers on their fellow classmates’ films to gain extensive on-set experience. This commitment to learning by doing applies to all of the programs the Academy now offers, with students working with industry standard equipment in world-class facilities. At the Academy, students can choose from a wide range of visual and performing arts programs that includes Filmmaking, Acting for Film, 3D Animation & Visual Effects, Broadcast Journalism, Cinematography, Digital Editing, Documentary Filmmaking, Game Design, Graphic Design, Musical Theatre, Photography, Producing, and Screenwriting. Theatre, B.F.A. Musical Theatre, Acting, Directing, Technical Theatre/Costume Design and Technical Theatre/Scenic and Lighting Design Program Objectives The overriding mission of the University of Montevallo, unique in higher education in Alabama, is to provide to students from throughout the state an affordable, geographically accessible, “small college” public higher educational experience of high quality, with a strong emphasis on undergraduate liberal studies and with professional programs supported by a broad base of arts and sciences, designed for their intellectual and personal growth in the pursuit of meaningful employment and responsible, informed citizenship. The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Theatre provides for the study of theatre within the context of the liberal-arts curriculum. Most students earning the B.A. degree are interested in a broad education that includes general education, theatre courses and elective study outside of theatre. B.A. students take four semesters of foreign language study to complete general education requirements. While, B.S. students take an additional 7-8 hours of mathematics and/or science. The Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Theatre is a professional degree with concentrations in Musical Theatre, Acting, Directing, Technical Theatre/Costume Design and Technical Theatre/Scenic and Lighting Design. Brief History of the School and the Department In October of 1896, the Alabama Girls’ Industrial School opened its doors to some 150 young women from all parts of the state. They had come to participate in a great experiment, in an innovation in education for Alabama. They had come to be trained as teachers, bookkeepers, artists, musicians, dressmakers, telegraphers and milliners. In other words, at last, there was a school in Alabama whose purpose was to educate women to be self-supporting; at last, here was an opportunity to escape from the drudgery of field work, mill work, or from the ignominy of depending on a father or brother for lifelong support if there was no husband. In 1923, the school became Alabama College, State College for Women, a degree-granting institution. Two men enrolled in January of 1956, and with 33 more arriving by September, a new era had begun for the school. In 1969, in order to reflect this changing atmosphere, the school changed its name to University of Montevallo, and its four distinct colleges (Arts and Sciences, Education, Business, and Fine Arts) were established. Today, UM holds fast to the principles that we were founded upon and the mission that we’ve always upheld. As Alabama’s only public liberal arts university, we take pride in knowing that our curriculum is both challenging and affordable. The University of Montevallo's Department of Theatre is home to a very diverse community of students and educators. Our program of over 100 BA/BFA majors is large enough to challenge you, but no student is a number at UM. Our production seasons are designed to expose you to a wide range of styles, including classics and 2 musicals every year. We are also committed to staging challenging plays by the best contemporary authors and have continually produced an “Alabama premiere” of a play or musical in recent seasons. Facilities, Classrooms and Theatres The University of Montevallo held the groundbreaking for its new multi-million-dollar Center for the Arts on Thursday, April 19 2018. The 36,000-square-foot facility will allow the College of Fine Arts at UM to provide a more comprehensive teaching and learning space giving fine arts programs a location to collaborate more across disciplines. This new facility will house a 350-seat theater with state-of-the-art acoustics and technology for music concerts and theater performances, a 100-seat black box theater and a courtyard suitable for outdoor performances and receptions. In addition, the Center for the Arts will be a new home for the Department of Theatre. Reynolds Studio Theatre is located in historic Reynolds Hall. The facility was renovated in fall 2004 and we continue to make upgrades. The majority of our main stage shows are produced in this flexible, 160 seat studio theatre space. The Chichester Black Box Theatre: Commonly referred to as the “Chi Box,” this popular space is used to stage a wide variety of plays and musicals in different configurations. Chi-Box productions usually sell out quickly and its intimate setting (approximately 50 seats) provides excellent training for students interested in theatre careers in major urban centers such as New York and Chicago. Scholarships and/or Assistantships Auditions will be held for the BFA Programs in Musical Theatre, Acting, Technical/Design and Theatre scholarships for all non- musical theatre students in February-dates are TBA. All applicants for scholarships and/or the Musical Theatre program will be notified of awards and/or acceptance by the end of March. University of Montevallo Theatre awards undergraduate scholarships funded through gifts to established scholarship accounts and through income generated by productions. These awards are separate from other financial aid available through the University Financial Aid office. An applicant can receive theatre AND university scholarship awards. An average of 8-10 scholarships are awarded each year to students based on talent and potential as well as academic achievement, as well as our Presidential scholarship which covers full tuition for 4 years. We can also award a limited number of smaller scholarships. Students must audition for the Musical Theatre Program on campus or via a taped audition to be enrolled in voice lessons in Fall 2019. All students accepted into the musical theatre program BFA degree track for Fall 2019 will have to formally pass a screening audition during the sophomore year to continue on the BFA track and receive that degree. If you are interested in the musical theatre program and cannot attend the campus auditions, please contact Department Chair David Callaghan via e-mail at [email protected].

Brief History of the School and the Department Off-Broadway's renowned York Theatre Company has been producing musical for 47 years. The York now offers a Musical Theatre Training Program that trains great performers and inspires great minds. This rigorous yet nurturing program brings young performers into the same room as working professionals on a daily basis to develop their musical theatre performance skills. We offer a three-week summer intensive for middle and high school students and a two-week winter intensive for college students. All classes take place at the York Theatre’s Off-Broadway venue in the heart of the mid-town-east arts district. Classes follow a professional rehearsal schedule focusing on acting, singing and dancing and culminate in a showcase performance on an actual Off-Broadway stage to which family, friends and New York industry professionals are invited. All teachers are working professionals and we offer master classes with some of the top names working in the performing arts today. Past guest artists have included Tony-nominees, John Tartaglia, Rebecca Luker, Richard Kind, Kerry Butler, Danny Burstein, as well as Siena Rafter (sign language coach on Deaf West’s revival production of Spring Awakening), Joe Dulude II who designed the makeup for Wicked on Broadway, as well as Leslie Carrara-Rudolph who created “Sesame Street’s” Abby Cadabby, Rich Lyon (from Avenue Q) who led a puppetry workshop. Our programs also include two Broadway or Off-Broadway shows with backstage tours and/or talkbacks with cast members afterwards. Some of our students have gone on to professional productions and two of our students from a recent session were called in to audition for one of Broadway’s current hits. The confidence, creativity, and self- expression these students gain from our programs give them tools for their future, regardless of the career paths they choose to pursue.
