Founded by David Mamet and William H. Macy, the Atlantic has the only conservatory program in the world that offers in-depth training in Mamet and Macy’s unique and influential approach to acting: Practical Aesthetics, the Atlantic Technique. The school’s mission is to ensure that each graduate masters the essential analytical and physical disciplines of acting and to empower every student with skills necessary for success in the profession. Facilities, Classrooms and Theatres: Atlantic Theater Company is the award-winning Off-Broadway theater that produces great plays simply and truthfully by utilizing an artistic ensemble. Since its inception in 1985, Atlantic has produced more than 150 plays including the Tony Award-winning productions of The Band’s Visit and the original Spring Awakening. During its history, Atlantic has garnered twenty-two Tony Awards®, twenty-one Lucille Lortel Awards, twenty-five Obie Awards, eleven Drama Desk Awards, eight Outer Critics Circle Awards, five New York Drama Critic’s Circle Awards, five Theatre World Awards, four Drama League Awards, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. At Atlantic Stage 2, student productions share the stage with our professional ensemble. Students also utilize our black box theater for smaller, more intimate performances. Located in the vibrant Chelsea neighborhood in the heart of New York City, Atlantic has two professional theater houses and 9 on-site state of the art studios for training and rehearsals. Scholarships and/or Work-study: Atlantic Acting School awards full scholarships to two actors through the Practical Aesthetics early decision scholarship (Applications open in September and end in November). We also offer a limited number of partial scholarships for select incoming students that are need and talent based. Brief History of the School and the Department Broadway Artists Alliance provides professional level training to talented young musical theatre performers. Located in the heart of New York City’s theatre district, BAA is uniquely situated to offer classes taught by TONY Award winners, Broadway performers and NYC’s top casting directors, agents, coaches and choreographers. Under the guidance of our incredible faculty, BAA students explore their creative talents, develop their performance technique and build confidence in a challenging yet supportive environment. Students receive group instruction and private coaching in vocal technique, song interpretation, sight singing, monologue work, scene study, on-camera acting, ballet, tap, jazz and musical theatre dance. BAA Students also gain insight into the professional world through class work, rehearsals, and industry showcases. They learn how to collaborate with other artists, make and keep industry contacts, set professional goals and market themselves to their best advantage. Our students receive exceptional training from the best in the business and, as a result, can be seen in Broadway and off-Broadway productions, national tours, film, television, commercials and print! Students get to audition and select a major of choice for each of our Summer Intensives (between Acting, Voice and/or Dance), but receive classes in all three disciplines. Brief History of the School and the Department Theatre arts at Daytona State welcomes you with a nurturing atmosphere, close contact with faculty and staff and small classes with individual attention. You can jump right into a number of annual mainstage productions, class showcases and a student improv club! DSC also offers a variety of courses in vocal and dance performance. Facilities, Classrooms and Theatres The program is housed at the college’s News-Journal Center, located in the heart of historic downtown Daytona Beach. The multi-level, multi-theatre facility features two state-of-the-art performance spaces. Main Theater: A proscenium-style venue that is intimate, yet grand in style. It features seating for 859 guests, an orchestra pit, fly tower, digital sound boards, computerized lighting and dimming, and excellent sight lines from every seat. Studio Theater: This 264-seat venue offers a thrust-proscenium hybrid-style design, with the stage amidst the audience. The theater boasts a trap floor and wire tension grid that allows for greater lighting fleXibility. Other amenities include dance studio rehearsal space with sprung wooden floors and mirrored walls, large dressing rooms and green rooms, four concession areas and traditional classroom spaces.
