Misha Chutskoff and his wife Candice Boyce of Vancouver, BC are pleased to announce the birth of their first child, son Luca Michael Chutskoff, on March 28, 2017 at St. Paul’s Hospital. Proud grandparents are Howard and Lorraine Chutskoff of Surrey, BC and Jack and Donna Boyce, also of Surrey. Grab a bar of Ivory soap-yes, only Ivory! It’s cheap, but don’t worry, you can even use it as soap when you are done here so there is no waste. Place a piece of waxed paper, parchment, plastic wrap, or paper towel in your microwave. Don’t use foil! And don’t worry about a mess, this is not a messy experiment. Start your microwave for a couple of minutes on high power. You don’t need to let it run that whole length of time, just stop it when you need to. Guess what happens?? Watch and see..... It looks like it should be foamy and wet, but it’s not. You can actually pick up the whole big chunk. It is the strangest thing.... looks different every time! So, now what to do with the giant soap cloud? Some ideas... 1. Let the kids take the whole thing into the bathtub and have at it. 2. Make it “snow” over the bathtub by crumbling the soap cloud over the kids (careful not to get any in anyone’s eyes!) 3. Make mini soaps. Here is how- First- put the cloud in a bowl and let the kids smash it up. And if it gets all over the place sweep or vacuum it up first, then wipe it down. Otherwise you’ll end up with a big soapy mess. Second- either in a bowl with a spoon, or with an electric beater, or in a food processor, add warm water just until it comes together. To test it, grab some with your hands and hold it in your fist. If it holds together in a ball, it’s ready. Third- Take the mold-able mixture and let kids press it into cookie cutters. Make sure kids are old enough to know it’s not food, or they are likely to attempt to eat it!

You can add just a couple of drops of food coloring to make colored soaps. After the soaps are molded, but still wet, you can gently push them out of the molds. Let them sit in a cool, dry place for a few days and soon you will have little soaps to wash (or play!) with. Funny how kids are always very interested in getting extra clean when it’s with soap they’ve made themselves.

A fun idea for the beach... How about a family portrait in the sand? Simply draw a ‘picture frame’ in the sand and hop in the middle, lay down and pose any way you like.... You could even scratch out the year in the sand at the bottom. Have someone take the snapshot! A super way to record summer memories!

Stage 9: Replanning Evaluation of your language programs leads back to planning. How should the program be modified to solve any problems that were identified in the Evaluation stage? If great successes were identified in the Evaluation stage, does it mean the community is ready to implement a more advanced goal? Replanning will take place constantly once a language program is underway.

In conclusion it should be noted that the stage of implementation in British Columbia has already started in the form of Dmitri Eli (Jim) Popoff’s “Dictionary of Doukhoborese” that reached its 34th instalment in the May issue of “ISKRA”. If one were to line up all words and expressions in the usual one-column, two-column, or multicolumn printed dictionary, we would come up with quite a wealth of entries. In the revitalization of the language of the Doukhobors of Canada one might try a method used in Sencoten, a Salish language on Vancouver Island, where every learner and teacher was given an i-phone programmed with a dictionary and some essentials of grammar – the advantage being of course that a given user might be able to able to communicate at any time with another learner or a teacher. I attended a demonstration of this process at the Vancouver Island Regional Library/North Saanich and Sidney Branch and was duly impressed. And it was fun! 38 ISKRA ИСКРА 2117 Q80: Two Streams of Doukhobors? Are there two Streams of Doukhobors? Apostolic and Inclusivist?

Answer by Koozma: The proposed dichotomy of ‘two streams’ of Doukhobors is too simplistic and encourages splintering. We are much more complex and diverse, as Doukhobors testified in Chapters 13-14, Traditional Doukhobor Folkways, 1977 (Revised 2017).

Though I support the effort to understand Doukhobor heritage (and Bill’s and Kim’s work is most welcomed and should continue), their dual categorization fails to recognize the real Doukhobor genius as a social movement in human development. I believe that describing Doukhobors in terms of these two streams leads to fake news and divisions which discourage understanding of what Doukhobors really stand for.

The best description of contemporary Doukhobors (in my assessment) are those who have long dropped their chains of churchism in favour of a new paradigm of Bill Kanigan of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and his son morality based on love and compassion for life.
