The Empire Under Strain, Part II by Alan Brinkley This reading is excerpted from Chapter Four of Brinkley’s American History: A Survey (12th ed.). I wrote the footnotes. If you use the questions below to guide your note taking (which is a good idea), please be aware that several of the questions have multiple answers. Study Questions 1. How did changing ideas about the nature of government encourage some Americans to support changing the relationship between Britain and the 13 colonies? 2. Why did Americans insist on “no taxation without representation,” and why did Britain’s leaders find this request laughable? 3. After a quiet period, the Tea Act caused tensions between Americans and Britain to rise again. Why? 4. How did Americans resist the Tea Act, and why was this resistance important? (And there is more to this answer than just the tea party.) 5. What were the “Intolerable” Acts, and why did they backfire on Britain? 6. As colonists began to reject British rule, what political institutions took Britain’s place? What did they do? 7. The Philosophy of Revolt Although a superficial calm settled on the colonies for approximately three years after the Boston Massacre, the crises of the 1760s had helped arouse enduring ideological challenges to England and had produced powerful instruments for publicizing colonial grievances.1 Gradually a political outlook gained a following in America that would ultimately serve to justify revolt. The ideas that would support the Revolution emerged from many sources. -

There is no doubt that from the late 1600s to the mid-1850s, less time was devoted to pure leisure than today. The reasons for this are many – from the length of each day, the time needed for both routine and complex tasks, and religious beliefs about keeping busy with useful work. There is evidence that men, women, and children did pursue leisure activities when they had the chance, but there was just less time available. Toys and descriptions of children’s games survive as does information about card games, dancing, and festivals. Depending on the social standing of the individual and where they lived, what leisure people had was spent in different ways. Activities ranged from the traditional sewing and cooking, to community wide events like house- and barn-raisings. Men had a few more opportunities for what we might call leisure activities but even these were tied closely to home and business. Men in particular might spend time in taverns, where they could catch up on the latest news and, in the 1760s and 1770s, get involved in politics. -

THE UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN ONTARIO DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY Autumn 2012 HISTORY 3231F “Yours to Discover”: A History of Ontario Roger Hall Time: Wed” 1:30-3:30 Lawson Hall 2228 Place: STVH 2166 [email protected] The course is a survey of Ontario’s rich and varied past commencing with its founding as the colony of Upper Canada in the aftermath of the American Revolution and stretching to the modern day. Conducted in the form of a workshop with instructor and students both participating, a chronological frame is followed although individual sessions will pursue separate themes revealing the changing politics, society and economy. Each session, of which there will be two per weekly meeting, will include a brief introduction to the topic by the instructor, and then a verbal report prepared by a student, followed by questions and discussion. Assigned readings should make the discussion informative. Readings will be from prescribed texts, internet and library sources and handouts. There will be no mid-terms in this course. Reports will be made by students throughout the course; the essay themes can be the same as the reports—needless to say a superior performance will be expected in written work. There will be ONE essay and a final examination. The Flow and the Composition of German Immigration to Philadelphia, 1727-177 5 IGHTEENTH-CENTURY German immigration to mainland British America was the only large influx of free white political E aliens unfamiliar with the English language.1 The German settlers arrived relatively late in the colonial period, long after the diversity of seventeenth-century mainland settlements had coalesced into British dominance. Despite its singularity, German migration has remained a relatively unexplored topic, and the sources for such inquiry have not been adequately surveyed and analyzed. Like other pre-Revolutionary migrations, German immigration af- fected some colonies more than others. Settlement projects in New England and Nova Scotia created clusters of Germans in these places, as did the residue of early though unfortunate German settlement in New York. Many Germans went directly or indirectly to the Carolinas. Over several decades, a large stock market, high taxes on inherited income, a sound institutional environment, and capital account openness accompa- nied the rise of widely held firms. Olof Lindahl and the 1770s and 1780s On 24 July 1786, the supercargo Olof Lindahl arrived in Gothenburg from Canton. With him came a young Chinese man: Afock. Lindahl wrote happily about com- ing home, and mentioned bringing Afock, but then warned his friends to ‘not get mixed up with the import of such indulgences, because first the board did not like it very much, and second such a person is damn bothersome’. He and Afock (a typical trade name) toured Sweden for months, visiting manors and homes ‘like one day at the home of Governor General Baron Sparre, who regaled a fair number of Countesses with the ogling of Afock’. In several places they left entries in guest books of the homes they visited. One such entry is signed Ya-fu Cai, giving us Afock’s real name. Afock visited several members of the royal family, and was even received by King Gustavus iii. Lindahl wrote: ‘here you see the steady Afock and the East Indiaman metamorphosed to courtiers’; suddenly, he did not find Afock so tiresome. Lindahl said that they passed their days in Stockholm in this way, seeing every place, entering all prestigious institutions and places imagin- able. According to Lindahl, Afock received lavish gifts that he could account for by himself, ‘because he is now so at home with Swedish that he speaks it fairly well and comprehends almost everything; he can even give a toast to King Gustaf’. In January the next year, he left the country: ‘all men, high and low, not only loved Afock but took emotional farewells’.1 With Olof Lindahl (1748–1798) the story continues with Canton in the 1770s and 1780s.2 Lindahl was born into a merchant family in Norrköping. -

Life of A Private By the 18th century Great Britain had established a series of American colonies along the American coast. While each colony had strong economic or political ties to Britain, they lacked strong bonds to one another. These American colonies were eco- nomically bound to Britain through the mercantile system, which restricted colonial trade. There was also an absence of banks and scarcity of gold and silver coins in the colonies which financially constrained the colonists. Many transactions in British America were conducted by credit and trade. What led to the American Revolution? Great Britain increased its American empire after the defeat of the French in the Seven Year’s War in 1763 (also known as the French and Indian War in America). Soon afterward, the British Parliament angered the colonists by restricting westward settle- ment and requiring the colonists to provide quarters or lodging for the British soldiers remaining in the colonies. Colonists were further angered when the British Parliament began taxing the British regiment marching colonists directly to help pay down the imperial war debt. Taxes were first levied on common household items imported into the colonies. Colonists responded to these unpopular British policies through boycotts and smuggling. Colonial resentment increased rapidly with the passage of the Stamp Act of 1765. This act required that certain items such as newspapers and legal documents be printed on paper bearing an embossed tax stamp. The paper was to be purchased from a government agent, who ensured that the tax was collected. Colonists responded through riots and intimidation of British officials. -

Steedman Submitted to the Graduate Faculty as partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in History The University of Toledo August 2019 This dissertation is a cultural history of the American reaction to the Upper Canadian Rebellion and the Patriot War. This project is based on an analysis of newspaper articles published by William Lyon Mackenzie and his contemporaries, diplomatic cables between Washington D.C. and London, letters, and accounts of celebrations, toasts, and public meetings which occurred between 1837 and 1842. I argue Americans and Upper Canadians in the Great Lakes region made up a culture area. By re-engaging in a battle with the British, Upper Canadians, and their American supporters sought redemption. Reacting to geographic isolation from major metropolitan areas and a looming psychic crisis motivated many of these individuals to act. -

Hume offers an empirical investigation of incomes, cost, artist remuneration, and buying power in the realm of long eighteenth-century cultural production and purchase. What was earned by writers, actors, singers, musicians, and painters? Who could afford to buy a book? Attend a play or opera? Acquire a painting? Only 6 percent of families had £100 per annum income, and only about 3 percent had £200. What is the “buying power” magnitude of such sums? No single multiplier yields a legitimate present-day equivalent, but a range of 200 –300 gives a rough sense of magnitude for most of this period. Novels are now thought of as a bourgeois phenomenon, but they cost 3s. per volume. A family with a £200 annual income would have to spend nearly a full day’s income to buy a four-volume novel, but only 12 percent for a play. The market for plays was natu - rally much larger, which explains high copyright payments to playwrights and very low payments for most novels—hence the large number of novels by women, who had few ways to earn money. From this investigation we learn two broad facts. First, that the earnings of most writers, actors, musicians, and singers were gener - ally scanty but went disproportionately to a few stars, and second, that most of the culture we now study is inarguably elite: it was mostly consumed by the top 1 per - cent or 0.5 percent of the English population.
