  • Development Possibilities for Ferry Transport in Adriatic-Ionian Region

This area was always used as a transport route, and ferry traffic boomed in the 1990s. However, in the last decade we have been witnessing a continuous decline of ferry traffic in most of the Adriatic-Ionian ports. In this paper we provide a description of the current situation on ferry transport in Adriatic-Ionian region with the focus on passenger flows. We determine trends and assess the potential for the extended use of ferry shipping in the region. Introduction A ferry is a form of transportation, usually a boat, but sometimes a ship, used to carry (or ferry) primarily passengers, and sometimes vehicles and cargo as well, across a body of water (Wergeland 2012). Rodrigue, Comtois, and Slack (2013) expand this definition by stating that ferries provide fixed-route services over short or long distances. The theory distinguishes three main types of ferries, namely (TRB 2003): – water taxis: small watercrafts that typically serve short cross-waterways or waterway circulation routes; – passenger ferries: larger vessels that have higher passenger capacity and speeds than water taxis and typically serve short- to moderate-length routes; 40 Marina Zanne, Elen Twrdy, Boštjan Žlak, Maja Stojaković – auto ferries: also known as roll-on, roll-off ferries, used to ferry transport vehicles as well as passengers.

Muslims may not exist today and the Jews may be few, only those who survived the concentration camps, but the city did not throw off this part of the identity. Today, there are four mosques, three of them very well preserved, while the Jewish synagogue, built in 1826, continues to exist and be the largest and most beautiful of the surviving religious buildings of the Greek Jews.

Strong Performers and Successful Reformers in Education StrongPerformers Successfuland EducationReformers in Education Policy Advice for Greece The future of Greece’s well-being will depend on improving educational performance to boost productivity Strong Performers and and improve social outcomes. In the current economic context, with the need to get best value for spending, Greece must and can address ineffi ciencies in its education system. Successful Reformers in Education The challenges are signifi cant. For example, Greece lags behind many OECD countries in performance on PISA, including countries with the same or lower levels of expenditure per student as well as countries with the same and lower levels of economic development. Salary costs per student are above the OECD Education Policy Advice average, mostly because Greek teachers have less teaching time and Greece has smaller classes. A smaller percentage of students who enter tertiary education complete a fi rst degree within the statutory study time than in any other country in Europe. for Greece To address the challenges, the Greek government has established a bold agenda and sought advice from a task force on the development and implementation of reform proposals that refl ect best practices in OECD countries. This report provides the outcomes of the work of the task force. It presents a roadmap for how the reforms can be successfully implemented, with pointers to relevant experience in other countries. As a contribution to the on-going policy discussions in Greece, it recommends specifi c short-, medium- and long-term actions that can improve effi ciency in the country’s education system.

This was a challenging task due to the fact that those principles applicable to urban areas had to cover a larger area.
