The way to answer a contradiction would be to either: 1. Show that it’s two different authors. 2. Show that the cases or variables are different. 3. Show that the outcome is really the same.

A Guide to the "Vilna" page

The Header: A- Name of Masechet/Tractate B- Perek/Chapter number C- Perek/Chapter name D- Daf/Amud - Page number  The pages are numbered with Hebrew letters. Each folio (two sides) is called a daf .The two sides of the daf are referred to as amud alef and amud bet.

The Center of the page: The Text E- The Mishna  The first formally written compilation of the Oral , the Mishna records the teachings, rulings and disputes of the Tanna'im (Rabbis of the Mishna). It was compiled by R' Yehuda HaNasi, who was known as "Rebbe" ("the teacher/master) in about the year 3690 (200 CE). F-The Gemara  Analysis and discussions from the Amora'im (Rabbis of the Gemara) on the Mishna and related topics. This predominantly took place in Babel/Babylonia, which was the center of Jewish life at that time period. The collection and redaction of the Gemara took place under the direction of Ravina and R' Ashi. This is referred to as the Talmud Bavli - The Babylonian Talmud. Surrounding the Text: The Primary Commentaries G-  The commentary of R' Shlomo Yitzchaki (France, 1040-1105), regarded as "The Father of Commentators," is called Rashi - an acronym of his name .  Rashi's commentary always appears towards the inside of the Gemara's text ,closer to the binding. H-  The commentary of Tosafot comprises the teachings and analyses by the Torah scholars of France and Germany spanning the 12th and 13th centuries. Tosafot takes an analytical approach, citing and scrutinizing both Talmudic text and Rashi's commentary in light of teachings elsewhere in the Gemara.  Tosafot's commentary always appears towards the outside of the Gemara's text.
