August 2020 page i 10 ANALYSIS OF ALTERNATIVES 368. The three sub-reaches selected for Project-2 of the FRERMIP physical works: JRB-1, JLB-2 and PBL-1, were chosen from 13 sub-reaches into which the FRERMIP program area was divided based on discussions among BWDB, ADB and the PPTA consultant. These 13 sub-reaches were evaluated using a multi-criteria assessment approach taking into consideration three primary criteria (riverbank erosion, flooding, and poverty) and several secondary criteria (related to planning, design, cost-benefit and safeguards issues). Of the six sub-reaches scoring highest1, these three sub-reaches were screened out due to a lack of active erosion and/or conflicts with other immediately planned interventions. 369. While riverbank protection was placed according to immediate needs especially for growth centers (“something to defend”), embankment construction considered alternatives especially for the area JLB-2. -

Chapter 2 68 2. Species Assemblages “The loss of biodiversity is a human paradox and a crisis of technological culture” (Kim and Weaver, 1994) This chapter compares species assemblages1 present in hydraulically modified (inside FCDI schemes) and pristine (outside FCDI schemes) locations in Bangladesh based upon a re-examination of species abundance data recorded by FAP 17 using more robust statistical methodology. The data used in the analysis includes the PIRDP, and several other FCDI schemes in other regions of the country. 2.1 Introduction Tropical fish communities2 are noted for their high diversity (Lowe-McConnell, 1987). The floodplain river systems in Bangladesh contain more than 260 species of teleost fish within 145 genera and 55 families (Rahman, 1989). Fish communities are influenced by biotic and abiotic factors which are continually changing through space and time. These rivers which originate in the young mountains across the national borders of Bangladesh, are very dynamic in nature, as the land mass is composed of recent deltaic deposits. There is no denying of the fact that rivers are the most eminent feature influencing the overall socio-economic condition of the over populated country, Bangladesh. In the rural areas, people are mainly dependent on the agricultural land resources for living and agricultural sector is dependent on river system for irrigation and drainage aspects. A large number of rural people are dependent on rivers for their living as fisherman, boatman and by other business activities. Moreover, the river system also plays an important role in the urban areas as the water supply and the industrial sector is heavily dependent on the river resources. Navigation is a very important aspect of economic activities of the country. The rivers also cause immense suffering to people of Bangladesh. River bank erosion is a serious hazard that directly or indirectly causes the suffering of about one million people annually (Elahi, 1990). A large number of people living in both rural and urban areas become the victims of flooding annually. -

I 1,2,3,4,5,7 Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Rajshahi, Rajshahi, Bangladesh 6Faculty of Fisheries, Patuakhali Science &Technology University, Patuakhali, Bangladesh ABSTRACT The present study was conducted at the Baral river adjacent area of both Charghat sluice gate of Charghat upazila and Baraigram sluice gate of Baraigram upazila under Rajshahi and Natore district of Bangladesh respectively during the period of May 2006 to April 2007 aiming to assess the sluice gate impact on fishing activity, fisheries diversity, riverine habitability and livelihood stability of the fishermen implying the gear, catch and environmental assessment survey, in- depth interview and participatory rural appraisal through in situ observation. The sluice gate impacted the fishing activity of the fishermen reducing or modifying the type, structure and number of gear, emphasizing to use minute meshed gear, restricting species and gear selectivity, increasing fishing effort and intensity and decreasing catch composition under limited operating periods. The sluice gate pessimistically affected the fisheries diversity reducing the type and number of fish species including prawn, decreasing their overall and local status and thrown them miserably in extinct, endangered, vulnerable and threatened position where abundance, availability and breeding of most species dominantly hampered, changed or reduced. -
