They are completely flooded between June and November and planted with Boro rice when floodwater recedes in December. However, early harvest period (April/May) floods frequently damage ripening rice. A calibrated/validated Soil and Water Assessment Tool for riparian wetland (SWATrw) model is perturbed with bias free (using an improved quantile mapping approach) climate projections from 17 general circulation models (GCMs) for the period 2031–2050. Projected mean annual rainfall increases (200–500 mm per 7–10%). However, during the harvest period lower rainfall (21–75%) and higher evapotranspiration (1–8%) reduces river discharge (5–18%) and wetland inundation (inundation fraction declines of 0.005–0.14). Flooding risk for Boro rice consequently declines (rationalized flood risk reductions of 0.02–0.12). However, the loss of cultivable land (15.3%) to increases in permanent haor inundation represents a major threat to regional food security. It was that like of dream comes true object for those people who lived in the eastern part of Indian Sub-continent under Bengal presidency in the British period. But when the Bengal partition came into act in 1905, people from the new province of East Bengal and Assam were expecting a faster move from the government to establish a university in their capital city. But, with in 6 years, the partition was annulled. The people from the eastern part was very much disappointed for that, but they never left that demand to have a university in Dhaka. After some several reports and commissions the university was formed at last. But, in 1923, in the first convocation of the university, the chancellor Lord Lytton said this university was given to East Bengal as a ‘splendid Imperial compensation’. Which turns our attention to write this paper. If the statement of Lytton was true and honest, then certainly Dhaka University stands as the foremost symbol of both the Bengal Partition in the academic ramification. INDIA Introduction Ecotourism is a new form of tourism based on the idea of sustainability. The term “ecotourism” has diverse meanings and scholars are not unanimous on what ecotourism really means. The concept of ecotourism came into prominence in the late 80s as a strategy for reconciling conservation with development in ecologically rich areas. Conservation of natural resources prevents environmental degradation. That is why, this form of tourism has received global importance. It is currently recognized as the fastest growing segment of the tourism market (Yadav 2002). The World Ecotourism Summit, held in Quebee City, Canada, from 19 th to 22 nd May, 2002, declared the year 2002 as the International Year of Ecotourism. Such declarations highlight the relevance and recognition of ecotourism, both locally and globally. Presently, ecotourism comprises 15-20% of international tourism. The growth rate of ecotourism and nature based activities is higher than most of the other tourism segments (Kandari and Chandra, 2004). Its market is now growing at an annual rate of 30% (Whelan, 1991). From this, the significance of ecotourism can be very easily evaluated. Definitions of Ecotourism: The concept of ecotourism is relatively new and often confusing. Therefore, a range of definitions of ecotourism has evolved. The term ‘ecotourism’ was coined by Hector Ceballos Lascurian in 1983 to describe nature based travel. Ceballos Lascurisn (1987) defines it as “traveling to relatively undisturbed or un contaminated natural areas with specific © South Asian Journal of Tourism and Heritage 180 MEENA KUMARI DEVI objectives of studying , admiring, enjoying the scenery and its wild plants and animals, as well as existing cultural manifestations (both past and present) found in these areas”. -

Abstract: The present study was conducted on Morphometric variations of Apple Snail Pila globosa (Swainson, 1822) at foraging selected site of Asian Openbill Stork Anastomus oscitans in Sembanarkoil region, Nagapattinam District, Tamilnadu, India from October 2016 to September 2017. The shell length (3.56 ± 1.05 cm), shell width (2.90 ± 0.93 cm), Aperture length (2.59 ± 0.89 cm), Aperture width (1.39 ± 0.50 cm) and Shell thickness (1.33±0.66 mm) were observed. The total weight in wet condition and (33.14±11.86g) and total weight in dry condition (13.08±4.90g) were also recorded. A Principal Components Analysis (PCA) was made in order to consider character inter- correlations. -

research paper After the Bangladesh Flood Action Plan: Looking to the future HUGH BRAMMER* 37 Kingsway Court, Hove, East Sussex BN3 2LP, UK The main objectives of the Bangladesh Flood Action Plan (FAP), to protect the country from river floods, were not achieved, for several political, economic and institutional reasons. Demographic and economic changes in the following 20 years have increased Bangladesh’s exposure to damaging floods. The country’s newly elected government is committed to providing flood protection and surface-water irrigation as a means to achieve national foodgrain self-sufficiency. Therefore, the feasibility and affordability of comprehensive flood and water management systems need to be re-examined. The technical assessment must take into account the finding that severe floods in Bangladesh are caused mainly by heavy rainfall within Bangladesh as well as the increased flood and cyclone risks associated with global warming. An institutional assessment should examine practical means to overcome governance constraints and to increase local responsibility for managing flood protection and irrigation projects. If such projects cannot be provided, alternative measures must be sought to provide security for lives, livelihoods and economic production. These could include ‘flood-proofing’ urban and rural settlements, development of improved crop varieties, and more efficient use of irrigation and fertilizers. Measures to expand other sectors of the national economy would also be needed to generate the exports and incomes required to purchase increased food imports. Nowadays, water consumption in a country is one of the determining factors related to its development activities. Rapid growth of population and increased urbanization activities particularly in developing countries offer great challenges to the water utility managers and service providers. In this context, a major challenge is to ensure adequate supply of water with acceptable quality to every city dwellers with minimum cost. However, it is quite difficult to achieve this target, if there is a shortage in water availability from the existing sources imposed by water quantity and quality issues. Therefore, a comprehensive assessment task should be undertaken prior to designing and establishing a long-term water supply options in an urban area of a developing country like Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, municipal water supply scheme mainly depends on the conventional water sources such as surface water from the rivers and groundwater from the underlying aquifer. Although the groundwater quality is satisfactory for drinking purpose and available abundantly in the shallow aquifer, quality limitations of surface water impose economic constraints with additional treatment cost for system operation. -

Ltd., Mumbai, India PREFACE At the superficial level, relations between India and Bangladesh seem to be sailing through troubled waters. The failure to sign the Teesta River Agreement is apparently the most visible example of the failure of reason in the relations between the two countries. What is apparent is often not real. Behind the cacophony of critics, the Governments of the two countries have been working diligently to establish sound foundation for constructive relationship between the two countries. There is a positive momentum. There are also difficulties, but they are surmountable. The reason why the Teesta River Agreement has not been signed is that seasonal variations reduce the flow of the river to less than 1 BCM per month during the lean season. This creates difficulties for the mainly agrarian and poor population of the northern districts of West Bengal province in India and the north-western districts of Bangladesh. There is temptation to argue for maximum allocation of the water flow to secure access to water in the lean season. -

Email: [email protected], fbrusa@ fcnym.unlp.edu.ar, [email protected] Abstract This contribution summarizes knowledge of organisms associated with apple snails, mainly Pomacea spp., either in a facultative or obligate manner, paying special attention to diseases transmitted via these snails to humans. A wide spectrum of epibionts on the shell and operculum of snails are discussed. Among them algae, ciliates, rotifers, nematodes, flatworms, oligochaetes, dipterans, bryozoans and leeches are facultative, benefitting from the provision of substrate, transport, access to food and protection. Among obligate symbionts, five turbellarian species of the genusTemnocephala are known from the branchial cavity, with T. iheringi the most common and abundant. The leech Helobdella ampullariae also spends its entire life cycle inside the branchial cavity; two copepod species and one mite are found in different sites inside the snails. Details of the nature of the relationships of these specific obligate symbionts are poorly known. Also, extensive studies of an intracellular endosymbiosis are summarized. Apple snails are the first or second hosts of several digenean species, including some bird parasites.A number of human diseases are transmitted by apple snails, angiostrongyliasis being the most important because of the potential seriousness of the disease. A case study on Deepor Beel: The Ramsar site and the most prominent flood plain wetland of Brahmaputra The genesis Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary and the Ramsar site of international importance recognized under the Ramsar Convention, 1971, located about 18 km southwest of Guwahati city between 90036∕ 39∕∕ E and 91041∕∕25∕∕ E longitude and 26005∕26∕∕ N and 2609∕26∕∕ N latitude and 55 m above the mean sea level is considered as one of the largest and prominent flood-plain lakes in the Brahmaputra valley in Ramcharani Mouza of Guwahati sub-division under Kamrup (Metropolitan) district. Deepor Beel included in the Directory of Asian Wetlands as a wetland type 14 is an open beel connected with a set of inflow and out flow channels. The main inlets of the beel are the Mara Bharalu and the Basishtha-Bahini rivers which carry the sewage as well as rain water from Guwahati city. The only outlet of the beel is Khanajan located towards the north- east having connection with the main river Brahmaputra. Another outlet, Kalmoni has now no existence due to the rampant construction over the channel.
