Had Conducted a Study “Flood Damage Mitigation Measures
Report on the outcome of the Workshop Held on 14th June, 2016 To discuss on the findings of the study titled ‘Flood Damage Mitigation Measure for Barak Valley In South Assam including effects of Climate Change’ 1. Introduction: Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) had conducted a study “Flood Damage Mitigation Measures for Barak Valley in South Assam, including Effects of Climate Change” in collaboration with National Institute of Technology, Silchar. Moreover NIT, Silchar had partnered with IIT, Guwahati for undertaking the climate change componentfor the project. The final report of the study was submitted in the year 2014. The report comprised of study findings along with suggestions, short and long term for flood mitigation measures in Barak Valley. To take forward the study findings, the executive summery along with short and long term solutions were submitted to the concerned Departments viz. Water Resources Department, Soil Conservation Deptt, Agriculture Department, Department of Environment, Forest & Climate Change and Inland Water Transport Department for taking necessary action. To review and understand the actions taken by concerned department in this regard, ASDMA organized a half-day workshop on 14th June, 2016 at ASDMA Conference Hall where the finding of the study were presented by Prof P.S. Choudhry, Civil Engineering Department, NIT, Silchar and also discussed suggestions regarding the implementation of the same.ASDMA also presented regarding the short & long-term goals and highlighted department-wise modalities in its implementation. The workshop was attended by 34 officials from various concerned departments and participated in the group discussion held to take stock of the actions taken and explore the strategy for future planning that would be helpful towards mitigation of flood in Barak valley. -

THE CONSERVATION ACTION PLAN FOR THE GANGES RIVER DOLPHIN 2010-2020 National Ganga River Basin Authority Ministry of Environment & Forests Government of India Prepared by R. K. Sinha, S. Behera and B. C. Choudhary 2 MINISTER’S FOREWORD I am pleased to introduce the Conservation Action Plan for the Ganges river dolphin (Platanista gangetica gangetica) in the Ganga river basin. The Gangetic Dolphin is one of the last three surviving river dolphin species and we have declared it India's National Aquatic Animal. Its conservation is crucial to the welfare of the Ganga river ecosystem. Just as the Tiger represents the health of the forest and the Snow Leopard represents the health of the mountainous regions, the presence of the Dolphin in a river system signals its good health and biodiversity. This Plan has several important features that will ensure the existence of healthy populations of the Gangetic dolphin in the Ganga river system. First, this action plan proposes a set of detailed surveys to assess the population of the dolphin and the threats it faces. Second, immediate actions for dolphin conservation, such as the creation of protected areas and the restoration of degraded ecosystems, are detailed. Third, community involvement and the mitigation of human-dolphin conflict are proposed as methods that will ensure the long-term survival of the dolphin in the rivers of India. Nowadays, water consumption in a country is one of the determining factors related to its development activities. Rapid growth of population and increased urbanization activities particularly in developing countries offer great challenges to the water utility managers and service providers. In this context, a major challenge is to ensure adequate supply of water with acceptable quality to every city dwellers with minimum cost. However, it is quite difficult to achieve this target, if there is a shortage in water availability from the existing sources imposed by water quantity and quality issues. Therefore, a comprehensive assessment task should be undertaken prior to designing and establishing a long-term water supply options in an urban area of a developing country like Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, municipal water supply scheme mainly depends on the conventional water sources such as surface water from the rivers and groundwater from the underlying aquifer. Although the groundwater quality is satisfactory for drinking purpose and available abundantly in the shallow aquifer, quality limitations of surface water impose economic constraints with additional treatment cost for system operation. -

The different grasslands were surveyed and from 26 different grassland sites 36 floricans were recorded. Males were most of the time in display and females were recorded from four different grasslands walking in Saccharum narenga and Sachharum sponteneum grass patches. The present study also recorded 36 different individuals thus a population of 72 floricans in the Dudwa Tiger Reserve The grasslands in Dudhwa after burning practices provides a good display ground for the floricans and a mosaic of upland grasslands Impreta cylindrica – Sacchrum spontaneum and low land Sacchrum narenga – Themeda arundancea provides ideal habitat for floricans in the Dudhwa NP and Kishanpur WLS. INTRODUCTION The Bengal Florican, Houbaropsis bengalensis (Gmelin 1789) is identified as critically endangered among the bustards by IUCN and global population is estimated at fewer than 400 individuals in the Indian subcontinent (Anon 2011). The Bengal Florican is listed in the Schedule I of the Indian Wildlife Protection Act. Distributed in the subcontinent in Assam, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, West Bengal and the terai of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh (Ali and Ripley 1987), it is now considered one of the most endangered bustards of the world. -

Ltd., Mumbai, India PREFACE At the superficial level, relations between India and Bangladesh seem to be sailing through troubled waters. The failure to sign the Teesta River Agreement is apparently the most visible example of the failure of reason in the relations between the two countries. What is apparent is often not real. Behind the cacophony of critics, the Governments of the two countries have been working diligently to establish sound foundation for constructive relationship between the two countries. There is a positive momentum. There are also difficulties, but they are surmountable. The reason why the Teesta River Agreement has not been signed is that seasonal variations reduce the flow of the river to less than 1 BCM per month during the lean season. This creates difficulties for the mainly agrarian and poor population of the northern districts of West Bengal province in India and the north-western districts of Bangladesh. There is temptation to argue for maximum allocation of the water flow to secure access to water in the lean season. -

For sustainable development of hill tracts, electricity is inseparable. Like other parts of Bangladesh hill tracts districts felt increasing demand of electricity. In this paper an attempt has been taken to present the existing environmental condition and analysis the future environmental condition after implementation of project. Electrification will extend the length of the active day. Electrification will improve security (people’s perception of safety and security) at the region. The elements of the project identified as components for analysis are chosen based on DOE’s guideline. The study showed that 87% people say that they feel safer at night since being electrified. Impacts are classified on the basis of EPA’s scaling and DOE, university’s teachers, NGOs expert’s opinions. Value more than 10 is classified significantly affected element of the project. -
