I stumbled upon it myself only while researching its obverse, migration, and then only by accident. Some years ago, I came across a police report on a ‘fracas’ at a Muslim graveyard in Calcutta, where, soon after partition, Hindu refugees had seized the land and put a stop to burials. Out of curiosity, I tried to find the graveyard, but this proved challenging. The people of the now-affluent Hindu neighbourhood that had sprung up in the area stared blankly at me when I asked them how to get there. A few protested that no such burial ground had ever existed. Finally, I found an elderly Muslim rickshaw puller who knew where it was, and he offered to take me there. There was no pucca road leading to it, just a sodden dirt track, barely wide enough for two persons to pass. When we reached the cemetery, it was like a place time had passed by. Only a dozen or so people still remained in what had been, just a few decades before, a bustling Muslim locality. They included the mutawwali, or custodian of the shrines, and a few members of his family, who lived in the most abject poverty I had ever seen. Their crumbling huts were dark and airless. They wore rags that barely hid their skeletal bodies. The women gazed at me in silence, too listless even to brush the flies off the faces of children who neither laughed nor played.2 1 My thoughts on migration (and immobility) have been influenced by David Washbrook, and developed in the graduate seminars we ran together. -

Mehedi Alam b, Mohammad Mahfujul Haque b,* a Department of Fisheries, University of Rajshahi, Rajshahi, Bangladesh b Department of Aquaculture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh ARTICLE INFO ABSTRACT Keywords: This study evaluates changes in fish species diversity over time in Hakaluki Haor, an ecologically critical wetland Haor in Bangladesh, and the factors affecting this diversity. Fish species diversity data were collected from fishers using Fish species diversity participatory rural appraisal tools and the change in the fish species diversity was determined using Shannon- Fishers Wiener, Margalef's Richness and Pielou's Evenness indices. Principal component analysis (PCA) was conducted Principal component analysis with a dataset of 150 fishers survey to characterize the major factors responsible for the reduction of fish species Climate change fi Anthropogenic activity diversity. Out of 63 sh species, 83% of them were under the available category in 2008 which decreased to 51% in 2018. Fish species diversity indices for all 12 taxonomic orders in 2008 declined remarkably in 2018. The first PCA (climatic change) responsible for the reduced fish species diversity explained 24.05% of the variance and consisted of erratic rainfall (positive correlation coefficient 0.680), heavy rainfall (À0.544), temperature fluctu- ation (0.561), and beel siltation (0.503). The second PCA was anthropogenic activity, including the use of harmful fishing gear (0.702), application of urea to harvest fish (0.673), drying beels annually (0.531), and overfishing (0.513). -

MAZUMDER2 Department ofSoil Science, Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Patuakhali, Bangladesh, 1Department ofSoil, Water and Environment, University of Dhaka. Dhaka-1000, Bangladesh. Abstract Twenty two soil samples from four pedons representing some established soil series namely Jaonia, Haiti, Taras and Digli from the Chalan beel area of Bangladesh were studied in the field as well as in the laboratory for their pedogenesis and characterization. All the soils are heavy textured with clay contents ranging from 47 to 60 percent. The soils are moderately acidic to neutral in reaction with high base saturation. The soils have developed redoximorphic features including redox concentration and redox depletion due to periodic flooding more than 4 months in the monsoon season. Development of cambic horizon in these soils is the most notable morphogenetic feature. Gleization and weak hydromorphism are the dominant pedogenic processes. At the subgroup level the soiis were classified as Typic Endoaquepts and Aerie Endoaquepts. Finally the soiis are characterized at the family level of soil taxonomy. Key words. It is located between 24°05' to 24°35' N latitude and 89° to 89°35'E longitude. The Chalan beel area belongs to the physiographic unit lower Atrai basin (FAO-UNDP 1988). -
