They are completely flooded between June and November and planted with Boro rice when floodwater recedes in December. However, early harvest period (April/May) floods frequently damage ripening rice. A calibrated/validated Soil and Water Assessment Tool for riparian wetland (SWATrw) model is perturbed with bias free (using an improved quantile mapping approach) climate projections from 17 general circulation models (GCMs) for the period 2031–2050. Projected mean annual rainfall increases (200–500 mm per 7–10%). However, during the harvest period lower rainfall (21–75%) and higher evapotranspiration (1–8%) reduces river discharge (5–18%) and wetland inundation (inundation fraction declines of 0.005–0.14). Flooding risk for Boro rice consequently declines (rationalized flood risk reductions of 0.02–0.12). However, the loss of cultivable land (15.3%) to increases in permanent haor inundation represents a major threat to regional food security. Ferdoushi Department of Fisheries Management, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University Abstract: Among different water quality parameters dissolved oxygen, transparency, pH, PO4-P and depth varied significantly among the sampling sites. The pH value in the present investigation remained a buffer condition (6.50- 7.90). Dissolved oxygen was ranges from 3.80 to 11.60 mg/l throughout the study periods. PO4-P concentration was observed highest (0.30 mg/l) in sampling site 2. On the basis of physical, chemical aspects sampling site 3 and sampling site 5 (situated in gosaipur and chandandoho) found in better condition in terms of limnological aspects. However, it could be concluded that Dhepa River will play important role in riverine fisheries and for further fisheries management. Therefore, it is important to take practical disaster mitigating measures which meet the local vulnerability conditions of the region. Designating Bangladesh as a research zone, this research aims to propose measures for strengthening the disaster mitigating system tailored to the region starting from identifying the characteristics of the disaster risk threatening the country. Abstract Twenty two soil samples from four pedons representing some established soil series namely Jaonia, Haiti, Taras and Digli from the Chalan beel area of Bangladesh were studied in the field as well as in the laboratory for their pedogenesis and characterization. All the soils are heavy textured with clay contents ranging from 47 to 60 percent. The soils are moderately acidic to neutral in reaction with high base saturation. The soils have developed redoximorphic features including redox concentration and redox depletion due to periodic flooding more than 4 months in the monsoon season. Development of cambic horizon in these soils is the most notable morphogenetic feature. Gleization and weak hydromorphism are the dominant pedogenic processes. At the subgroup level the soiis were classified as Typic Endoaquepts and Aerie Endoaquepts. Finally the soiis are characterized at the family level of soil taxonomy. Key words. Chalan beel, Soil morphology, Pedogenesis, Characterization Introduction Chalan beel, the largest beel in Bangladesh, is a low lying wetland area between the Barind tract and the Ganges river floodplains. It is located between 24°05' to 24°35' N latitude and 89° to 89°35'E longitude. The Chalan beel area belongs to the physiographic unit lower Atrai basin (FAO-UNDP 1988). -

39 Pakistan's Progress By Guy Mountfort In the short space of twelve months Pakistan has laid wide-ranging plans for conserving her wildlife, hitherto completely neglected. On the recommenda- tion of two World Wildlife Fund expeditions, led by Guy Mountfort, an international WWF trustee, two national parks and several reserves are being created which should give Pakistan a last chance to save the tiger, the snow leopard and several other seriously threatened mammals and birds. NTIL very recently wildlife conservation in Pakistan was non- U existent; today the situation is extremely encouraging. Under the direction of President Ayub Khan, most of the recommendations in the report of the 1967 World Wildlife Fund expedition have already been implemented, and a number of the proposed new wildlife reserves are now in being. A wildlife committee (in effect a Government Commission) has been set up under the distinguished chairmanship of Mr. M. M. Ahmad, Deputy Chairman of the Central Government Planning Commission, to create a permanent administrative framework for the conservation and management of wildlife and habitats, and two sub-committees are studying technical, educational, legal and administrative requirements. After submitting detailed reports and recommendations to the President in the spring of 1970, the committee will be replaced by a permanent wildlife advisory body to co-ordinate future planning. Responsibility for the management of wildlife resources has been given to the Department of Forests. Forest Officers are to be given special train- ing in wildlife ecology and management, and the first trainees have just completed courses in the United States. Meanwhile, a post-graduate curriculum in wildlife management is in preparation at the Forest Institute at Peshawar, to which Major Ian Grimwood has been seconded by FAO.
