Fountain pens are accessories as well as writing instruments. Many are works of art in their own right. And even simple, cheap fountain pens are often very elegant. If you do a lot of writing, fountain pens are often much more comfortable to use than even the best roller ball because you can use such a light touch with them.

Classic and modern vintage fountain pens. Period 2000 - 2010

through four generations, combining the Jura tradition of ingenuity and Swiss tradition of quality, use their craftman’s hands to produce remarkable objects like magicians.

Based in the Haut – Jura, a rugged and beautiful region close to Switzerland, the Jean- Pierre Lépine firm constantly pushes new boundaries in its pursuit of new shapes and technological inventions to make writing instruments, self winding and accesoiries in which the imagination knows no bounds.

Benjamin Lépine with his computers and 3D graphics software generates the ideas and builds and develops the shapes which he then refines down to the last micron. Every item in their catalogue is manufactured in their own workshops. The articles are machined from a single oiece, designed in precious resine, brass, aluminium, methacrylate, acetate, gold, silver, rare woods, stainless steel or using cutting edge tecnologies and then put through a series of complex operations to achieve a perfect finish.

Mabie Todd

Antique fountain pens. An interesting aside: in French the bird, ‘swan’, is Period 1920 – 1952 ‘signe’. ‘Signe’’ in French has two meanings: the bird, swan, but also the verb to sign. Was this an unintentional play on words? It hardly seems likely, given the purpose of a fountain pen, and yet even in Mabie Todd’s 1927 advertising slogan: ‘Sign it with a Swan’ there is no allusion to this French double meaning – this despite the pens being sold in France at the time. Stipula

Classic and modern vintage fountain pens. Period 2000 - 2006

Handmade in Florence Italy, Stipula is one of the premier makers of Italian pens. The name “Stipula” boasts very ancient origins. In the Latin language it literally meant “straw” or “small piece of straw”. But the actual meaning of the word is connected to the widespread use, among the ancient Romans, of stipulating an agreement by splitting a small piece of straw. For Stipula, this name indicts a deep commitment for quality and accuracy, a special agreement made with those who hunt for excellence and indisputable quality in writing instruments. Excellence in the materials and outstanding craftsmanship “Stipula” still preserves the taste and sensitivity to beauty of the traditional Florentine craftsmen’s shops. But also undertakes solutions which, respectful of the ancient rules, make the most of innovations and technological developments. The manufacturing of Stipula fountain pens lays stress on details and always focuses on what makes a writing instrument highly performing, reliable, and attractive for a lifetime. The materials used are indeed beautiful and in every case the color is the absolute protagonist. As for the metal trims of its pens, Stipula exclusively uses massive gold or sterling silver or special finishes obtained with advanced treatments of the surfaces. Clips, rings and all other metal accents are shaped and engraved in line with the precepts of the Florentine goldsmith traditions.

Cool vintage pen that actually kinda looks like the plane. Angular shapes and an inlaid nib make it look like the 1970s version of the Carene. These might go back as far as 1965; certainly by 1971 they were generally available. The matte plastic ones generally had matching sections, while the metal ones used black sections. Nibs are 18k gold, matching the trim.

Introduced in 1978 and designed by Alain Carre (a moderately famous designer back in that time). The pen has a rather distinctive look. It is long and tubular with rounded ends. The clip is a straight clip (not the usual Waterman split clip) and has a large ball at the end. The nib is 18k gold. But this pen doesn't turn up very often here.

Tips for cleaning, removing scratches and polishing surfaces and nibs

TEN TIPS FOR YOUR FOUNTAIN PEN 1. If you don't want to lend your fountain pen, always keep a ballpoint in your pocket as a lender. 2. If you don't mind lending your fountain pen, keep the cap, that way it won't "accidently" be pocketed. 3. If you write with small letters, use a fine nib and vice versa. 4. If you're bothered by a scratchier nib, choose a broad one. 5. Always replace the cap with the nib upwards, that way the air pocket will force excess ink back into the pen. 6. If you're going to fly with your fountain pen, keep it full or empty. A little air could expand and force out some ink. 7. If you're not going to use your pen for a while keep it full or empty. The acid in inks together with oxygen starts oxidation, which corrodes your rubber sac. 8. Write with your cap posted, if you accidently drop your pen, the heaviest part will reach the floor first. 9. Replace the cap when you put your pen down, or keep it posted at all times, that way it won't roll off the table. 10. Rinse your pen once a month by filling it with luke warm water until no more residue escapes.
