History and Future e live in a world that places a high value on time. Instruments made to count time have come to command astronomical prices. Yet in the manic, noisy crossfire of modern life, objects designed to make time count for more are rare.

For more than a century, a family company nested in the Italian Dolomites has remained relentlessly curious about perfecting the deeply personal – often magical – relationship between paper and the human mind.

Since beginning our quest for perfection in 1912, we have watched words - and the countless hours we devote to them – become devalued by abundance. ‘Progress’ has often come at the price of values, meaning and truth.

Far from representing a suspension of progress, exist so that connoisseurs of thought and devotees of words may savour the luxury of slowing time down.

“All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence that you know.” Ernest Hemingway Write the truest sentence that you knowWrite the Many of our friends and rivals delight in celebrating pens as relics of days gone by. With the greatest of respect, we beg to differ. Whereas others portray themselves as keepers of tradition, Montegrappa remains steadfastly committed to the tradition of innovation.

Our manufactory is situated in the exact location where Italian fountain production began more than a century ago. Within these walls, antique artisanal high jewellery craft stands shoulder-to-shoulder with high- precision, computer-controlled technologies.

But technical excellence is the very least our community of Montegrappisti deserves. Above all, the imaginations of fantasists, visionaries, and our most exuberant users are what spur us on to ever more audacious and uncommon creations. It began as a rare indulgence… A masterpiece of burnished sterling silver and a microcosm of history: the most elaborate production pen ever made is the Samurai (Warriors, 2018) – recipient of Robb Report’s Best of the Best award.

…and turned into an OBSESSION

Never before had writing instruments been thought of as couture jewellery, but one seemingly random creation changed everything.

Combining precious metals, mother-of-pearl celluloid and audacious design, The Dragon (1995) caught the imagination of the luxury world, and set Montegrappa on a path that would shape its destiny.

More than two decades later, the creations comprising our Ultimate Craft class are the result of a quest to test the limits of our imagination and expand the traditional boundaries of writing culture.

For Montegrappa and Montegrappisti alike, these most uncommon objects stand as pure expressions of individualism and savoir faire. Within Montegrappa exists a determination to surpass the highest expectations. Our culture of boundless curiosity and self-belief is one that finds its closest parallels in the world of haute horlogerie.

Non plus ultra is the label applied to Montegrappa’s most ambitious creations: pieces incorporating exceptional levels of technical or artistic accomplishment. Increasingly, new technologies permit our craftspeople to realise concepts at the limits of imagination, and respond to growing demand for exceptionally intricate and original objects.

With each unprecedented development comes a glimpse of the next. Customer feedback and our own exploration will ensure the exciting new genre of pen complications will be one to keenly over the coming years.

A century later, the land surrounding the Montegrappa factory is a place of pilgrimage for literature aficionados.

Meanwhile, the company maintains close ties with the Hemingway family – a relationship that culminated in the inauguration of a very special series of pens in 2016. Made to the highest standards in ultra-limited numbers, each new edition evokes a different John Hemingway with Giuseppe Aquila chapter of the Old Brute’s remarkable life.

A factory, a town and one of the twentieth century’s most fascinating figures . . . all would find their destinies altered by acts of heroism.

In October 1918, a series of battles saved the Venetian Plain from the aggression of the Entente forces. Among the witnesses to the Epic of Monte Grappa was an eighteen-year- old ambulance driver named Ernest Hemingway, stationed in the town of Bassano – only metres from Italy’s first fountain pen factory.

The magnitude of those events was immortalised in Hemingway’s seminal 1929 novel A Farewell to Arms – just as it had been by a petition to rename Bassano the previous year. With new ownership, and a manufacturing base in the newly symbolic town of , the first pens adorned with the Monte Grappa insignia came into being. Those who truly value words know the mystery and majesty of committing oneself to paper. Elegance is more than a mere aesthetic: it is the complex act of choosing which ideas to discard and which to keep.

Over four generations, my family has devoted itself to defending elegance. Creating the perfect pen requires a delicate balance of science and art. Like a musical instrument, a pen only reveals its true potential in the hands of its owner. Ultimately, our role is to enable and inspire others to make the most fulfilling choices.

Surrounded by replicas of pens created over the years for leaders, writers, celebrities and aficionados, I often reflect on the pleasure and strength they draw from their own pen, and the role that elegant expression has played in defining their extraordinary lives.

Giuseppe Aquila C.E.O., Elmo & Montegrappa, S.p.A. Montegrappa has won admirers around the world for its ability to realise levels of quality and beauty without rival. Within Italy’s oldest fountain pen factory, craftspeople of the highest calibre apply ancient artisanal techniques to the most luxurious materials.

But recent years have seen critical investments in technology and young talent. With these have come new possibilities to simulate, model and realise ideas beyond the traditional realms of pen making. Suddenly, connoisseurs of complications and precision engineering can find new points of fascination in objects regarded only recently as passé.

After spending more than a century refining and perfecting its craft, today Montegrappa stands on the crest of a new wave of enthusiasm for the timeless technology of fine pens. Realising miniatures that defy belief, our master painter brings twenty years of restoration experience from Europe’s leading art museums. Whether interpreting family photos or favourite works of art, her meticulous brushwork provides the most prestigious form of personalisation.

Blending the precision of a watchmaker with the finesse of a jeweller, the production of luxury writing instruments demands high skill and an instinct for the nuances of materials and ergonomics.

Montegrappa’s most fanciful creations make its extraordinary craftsmanship clear, but every product that passes through the Bassano factory is subject to the highest levels of know-how and care. For Montegrappa’s production team, ‘handmade in Italy’ signifies far more than a designation of origin. Personal touch is paramount.

Among our craftsmen and women are many without peer in their respective fields. They include masters of arts like low-relief engraving, The antique jeweller’s craft of burin, lost wax casting, hand-painting and enamelling. Hand-etching precious metals is a painstaking process that can take months to complete, but generations to enjoy. Sublime craftsmanship With a reputation rooted in the creation of bold celluloid designs, it is fitting that Montegrappa owns the world’s largest inventory of this prized – and increasingly scarce – material. Careful management of remaining stocks will ensure that celluloid continues to adorn reissues, special editions and hallmark Extra pens for years to come.

Opulent materials

From the mirror-polished resin finishes of our entry- level pens, to the celluloid coveted by collectors and the precious stones that distinguish our most exclusive, bespoke creations, Montegrappa is synonymous with luxurious materials.

It is perhaps fortuitous that many of Earth’s most precious substances are also the most conducive Nib & feeder to the art of writing. More than a hundred years of crafting elaborate and exotic pens make Montegrappa’s materials expertise and repertoire the envy of the industry.

Recent product releases have seen designs reach beyond classical materials like gold and sterling silver – incorporating rare alloys and woods. The point of contact between nib and paper…it’s an action performed millions of times over a lifetime. But for complex thoughts and emotions to come to life, nuance is everything. Pure expression occurs in magical moments of perfect flow.

Nuance and flow have long been hallmarks of Italian design – a tradition which Montegrappa is proud to continue in the most literal sense. With increasing numbers of people finding sanctuary and identity in pen and paper, many are now discovering the unrivalled writing experience that insiders have known about for decades.

The joy of writing

The objects we treasure most are those that feel like extensions of self. In a digital world where words have become commodities, the value of pleasure provided by Montegrappa’s ultra-individualistic pens continues to rise.

Pens have an important ceremonial and Pictured: symbolic function. The limited edition Chef The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho (2012) (2018) is one of several thematic pens created Quincy Jones - The Secret Garden (2015) to recognise professional accomplishment. Despite possessing Italy’s most advanced pen manufactory and mastering the most elusive jeweller’s crafts, we hesitate to lay claim to perfection.

Why? Because of the deeply personal relationship between writer, pen and page. True perfection is realised only when an object cannot conceivably be bettered, according always to the beholder’s eye . . . and hand.

Private bespoke manufacture enjoys a long tradition at Montegrappa, but is currently undergoing a renaissance amidst soaring global demand for ultra-personalised products. For Montegrappa, it offers a perfect entrée to customers with a shared belief in pens as centrepieces of creativity and identity.

Extensive materials inventories – including many unique to Configurator – give users the power to create exotic looks or bring sentimental meaning to objects made to last a lifetime. In an era of profound cultural change, a new paradigm is taking hold of luxury. For an informed, worldwide constituency, elitism may no longer pass for excellence. Flawless craftsmanship must be an ethos, not a feature. Today’s luxury visionaries embrace their archives with reverence and an urge to reinvent – dressing familiar ideas with contemporary flourishes to delight the intellect and excite the soul.

Montegrappa exists at an intersection where connoisseurs who crave rare beauty cross paths with aesthetes seeking the ultimate creative tool. Included among the ranks of the Montegrappisti are figures as distinctive – and disparate – as Quincy Jones and Sir Jonathan Ive. What binds these unlikely cohorts is strength of purpose and a sensitivity to detail that deserves nothing less than the world’s finest writing instrument. Montegrappa’s roots in Bassano extend to the town’s lively gastronomy scene: a collaboration with Danieli Bar led to the creation of a new cocktail inspired by the popular Montegrappa Mule (2016).

Located in a converted power plant on the banks of the river Brenta, Montegrappa’s headquarters lie in the heart of Veneto – among Europe's most prosperous cultural and industrial regions. Close proximity to many of the world’s finest creators of jewellery, glass and fashion continues to inform our culture and competency – as it has done for more than a century.

Today, the serenity of Bassano del Grappa sits in sharp contrast to its epic wartime history. The locals have much to be proud of in this storied, picturesque town, where man and nature appear to live in perfect balance. It is the unmistakable gioia di vivere of Bassano that we strive to impart upon every product we send out into the world. Octagons and references to the number eight – graphical, numerological and symbolic – have figured within the mythology and styling of Montegrappa objects since its earliest years. They remain a staple feature of our fountain pen nibs.

It isn’t difficult to pick out a Montegrappa in a line-up. In a market full of products exuding solidity, reliability and – ultimately – featureless conformity, Montegrappa creations are designed to distract. Like the words they are built to write, they appear as colourful birds of paradise that have wandered into in a flock of besuited banality.

Across the full Montegrappa range, several recurring features denote high craft and common purpose. The scripted Montegrappa logo adorns the cap sections of all our pens and the nibs of our fountain pens.

Pens belonging to Montegrappa’s Signature class represent the brand’s most accommodating and frequently requested silhouettes.

Like the standards in a songbook, these are the pens that users, dealers and corporate clients return to again and again. Each of the families carries its own set of defining characteristics – but always with the hallmarks of style, craftsmanship and superlative writing experience that define Montegrappa. Naturally, every piece is made in Italy.

For some, choice is a question of aesthetics; for others, handle or writing need. Fountain pen, rollerball and ballpoint modes are standard across almost all models, with several including mechanical , markers and even stylus cases.

Whereas the limited editions of the Ultimate Craft class cater for more individualistic tastes, all Signature products are open edition and available in the market’s widest range of colours, finishes and writing modes.

High passion of users towards specific Signature class pens prompted the creation of select accessory lines that echo and complement the style of their favourite silhouette, such as this NeroUno Chronograph. The urge to own the unique and distinct also bubbles within the world of the Signature class. Special editions of pens in families like NeroUno, Ducale, Extra and Fortuna feed market curiosity with rare and remarkable variations on popular standard themes.

Incorporating exotic materials, special motifs or the ideas of external tastemakers, these enhanced objects tell stories and connect to trends and tastes beyond the conventional realm of pen culture.

As well as arousing the interest of individualists and collectors, these incursions into new territory help the brand make itself known to dealers, media and consumers less acquainted with Montegrappa or the pleasure of owning fine writing instruments.

The elite Extra family is the brand’s flagship – a grail for writing connoisseurs. Combining exquisite celluloid with .925 silver trims, 18 carat gold nibs and ebonite feeders, Extra is the quintessence of Montegrappa’s history and future. History, culture and supreme accomplishment are inspirations for pens created within Montegrappa’s Continuing Stories series.

Designed to appeal to the passions and individuality of discerning pen owners and collectors, these strictly numbered, limited edition releases provide the freedom for Montegrappa to explore the limits of writing instrument design and express the full repertoire of its craft.

From the classical to the avant-garde, high culture to pop culture, all Continuing Stories pens are unequivocally uncommon, but share the same high-calibre craftsmanship and meticulous attention to the stories they symbolise.

The form and function of the Ilie Năstase Retro 73 (Icons, 2018) recalls the golden age of sport, and pays tribute to the original bad boy of tennis.

Watchmaking genius is celebrated with exquisite celluloid and a sixteen-millimetre integrated clock in the Bartolomeo Ferracina (Genio Creativo, 2018). Evoking the neoclassical marble creations of its namesake, the Antonio Canova (Genio Creativo, 2017) may be the most sculptural pen ever made. Many of Montegrappa’s modern limited editions sell out upon release, appearing only briefly in the public domain. A private museum at the brand’s headquarters showcases the complete archive, alongside an extensive collection of vintage pens dating back to 1912.

For those unable to make the journey to Bassano del Grappa, Montegrappa Vault is an online destination that documents a century of uncommonly exquisite creations.

Montegrappa pens are practically a fixture in the annual awards of leading luxury and pen industry bodies. Recent accolades include a Couture Design Award for My Guardian Angel (2014) and two Pen World Readers’ Choice trophies for The Brain Pen (2013).

Interestingly, recent years have seen increasing interest from pen evangelists and admirers of rare objects in limited edition reissues of historical models like Mia Carissima (2017).

Montegrappa enjoys a strong presence within these domains, but is increasingly relying on specialty interest, design and style platforms to forge a profile as the most extroverted and covetable of all pen brands.

High-class photography, technology stories and an increased frequency of remarkable and original product releases are helping Montegrappa become a reference name wherever a fascination for extraordinary objects exists.
