Cambridge Advanced Chamber Music Monday 23 July – Friday 27 July 2012 West Road Concert Hall Cambridge University Faculty of Music

AIM: To provide a learning environment for shared music making. This is one of several courses that will run simultaneously ranging from courses for the beginning pianist through to the ‘Advanced Chamber Music Course ‘ all with the aim of providing a learning environment for shared music making.

Advanced Chamber Music (Suzuki book VI plus, or grade 8 and higher)

Activities:

Chamber music coaching will concentrate on music from the classical era. Mozart wrote three concertos in versions for piano and string quartet. Movements selected from the piano concertos of Mozart K414, 415, & 449, will be studied and performed in this version, with the string parts played by a mix of students and young professionals, led from the violin by Koen Rens. Selected piano trios by Haydn are the alternative choice of repertoire.

Students have the rare chance to experience Multi-piano repertoire for 2-4pianos, using up to four grand pianos. These will either be equal level pieces, or pieces where the advanced student plays alongside the less advanced. Teacher/pupil duets where the advanced pianist will play with an elementary student, or conventional duets are also part of the chamber music mix.

‘Spanish’ music is the theme for the special masterclasses, although that does not preclude students opting to present other music.. Participants will both participate in and observe the masterclasses, Students who wish to present a piece from the Suzuki repertoire will have a masterclass with Bruce Anderson, or, Stephen Power, while students presenting non—Suzuki repertoire will work with Charles Owen.

Koen Rens will give a talk on the subject of effective practicing.
