Forth Estuary Forum 19th Jan 2012 Scottish Canals an Asset for the future Encourage all public bodies to work in partnership to deliver sustainable development and regeneration of Canal Scottish Government wishes to increase the economic, environmental and social value The rebirth of a cross-Scotland Waterway linking Glasgow & Edinburgh gives us an opportunity to create an entirely new product for the country Welcome to the Lowland Canals Canal Headlines Social • Scotland’s canals result in cost savings to health services of almost £10 million due to increased levels of physical activity • Canals towpaths are 300% busier than 8 years ago Economic • In the last 8 years there has been over £370m of investment along Lowland canals • The investment has help to create almost 4,000 Full Time Equivalent jobs over the same 8-year period. • There have been 2,000 new houses built alongside Lowland canals in recent years.
