The Lands of Kincaid in Relation to the Highlands of Scotland
Peter Anthony Kincaid The lands of Kincaid in relation to the Highlands of Scotland. The physical boundary between the Lowlands and the Highlands of Scotland is the Highland boundary fault. The Highland boundary fault creates a visible change in the geology of the land. The fault comes ashore from the river Clyde near Helensburgh and continues in a north east direction towards Aberfoyle. It continues north east all the way to near Stonehaven on the coast of the North Sea.1 The islands of Inchmurrin, Creinch, Torrinch, and Inchcailloch in Loch Lomond all form visible parts of the Highland boundary Fault.2 The lands of Kincaid are at best about 15.3 English miles or about 24.6 kilometres from this fault (if one takes a direct line from the intersection of Campsie Road and Milton Road to summits north east of Conic Hill). Without doubt the lands of Kincaid are physically in Lowland Scotland. Some may argue that people may have considered a different boundary with regards to what one considered a Highlander. The evidence does not support this. It is not until the 1716 penal laws established against the Highlanders that this author could locate any official boundary. In what we refer to as the Disarming Act of 1716, the western bounds were established as "within the Shires of Dumbarton on the North-side of the Water of Leven, Stirling on the North-side of the River of Forth."3 At that time, Scots must have understood the Highlands to be north of the River Forth and north of the river Leven. -

Madelvic House and Vehicle Production This Victorian red stone building was the original office of The Madelvic Motor Carriage Company. The company was founded in 1898, by William Peck (1862 – 1925), later knighted, for the manufacturing of electric vehicles. Madelvic was one of the first Scottish motor brands built in the first British purpose-built car factory, reputedly with a test track (23 years ahead of Fiat). It was also the first to go into liquidation, in 1900. All assets were bought by Kingsburgh Motor Company, which manufactured cars powered by internal combustion engine, but by 1902 it, too, had financial troubles. Over a short period of time other companies moved in manufacturing lorries and buses using bought-in components (Stirling’s Motor Carriages Ltd of Hamilton) and taxi-cabs (Scottish Motor Works). -

Forth Seabird Group Forth Islands Bird Report 2010 Compiled by Bill Bruce April 2011 SEABIRD SPECIES SUMMARIES 2010 Note: AOS = Apparently occupied sites; AON = Apparently occupied nests; AOB = Apparently occupied burrows; AOT = Apparently occupied territories FULMAR GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL Overall, total numbers are very similar to last year On Fidra, Carr Craig and Inchmickery numbers (up 18 birds, 1%) are the same as last year while all other islands show a decrease. Overall numbers are down by 12 CORMORANT AON (17%) On Craigleith and Inchkeith breeding numbers LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL & are exactly the same as last year. For the second HERRING GULL year none were breeding on Haystack while on Carr Craig and Lamb numbers are down. Overall These gulls were counted on Inchkeith, the first numbers are down by 21 AON or 8%. count since 2002. This showed that were 2620 AON / 3720 AOT for herring gulls and 2670 AON SHAG / 3500 AOT for LBB gulls Biggest increases are on Lamb (+39 AON, 52%) KITTIWAKE and Fidra (+45 AON, 28%) while the biggest decrease is on Inchkeith (-32 AON, -20%). Kinghorn Loch Case Study by Julie Farr August 2007 PREAMBLE This case study is the second in a series being published by the Caledonia Centre for Social Development as part of the “Popularising the community right to buy provisions of the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003” project. This case study is written by Julie Farr who is a Director of Kinghorn Community Land Association 2005. The case study is published by the Caledonia Centre for Social Development and should be cited as follows: Farr, Julie, 2007. Kinghorn Loch Case Study. Caledonia Centre for Social Development, Inverness. INTRODUCTION This case study documents the experience of the Royal Burgh of Kinghorn in using the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 (LRA) to attempt to acquire part of the former Burgh Commons for the community. Kinghorn Community Land Association 2005 (KCLA) was established in March of that year, at which point it submitted a late application for an area of land bordering Kinghorn Loch. This land was used for recreational purposes and was designated as open space in the Local Plan. KCLA 2005 has an interest registered in this land but has hit barriers in activating the right to buy even though it was on the market. The Association has subsequently applied to register an interest in a further eighteen areas of land surrounding Kinghorn Loch. Many lessons have been learnt by KCLA and it is hoped that other community bodies can learn from the organisationʼs experience. THE AUTHOR Julie Farr, the author of this case study, grew up in a village on the outskirts of Glenrothes in Fife but now lives in Kinghorn with her husband. -
