Cablefax Dailytm Thursday — January 9, 2020 What the Industry Reads First Volume 31 / No
www.cablefaxdaily.com, Published by Access Intelligence, LLC, Tel: 301-354-2101 Cablefax DailyTM Thursday — January 9, 2020 What the Industry Reads First Volume 31 / No. 006 Quick Bites: Quibi Not ‘Shrinking TV’ For Mobile Viewing In just over a year, short-form content streamer Quibi has been able to raise $1bln in funding while receiving the back- ing of major Hollywood studios, but are consumers ready to embrace the app? CEO Meg Whitman and founder Jeffrey Katzenberg used the company’s CES keynote Wednesday to dispel any consumer skepticism regarding Quibi, calling it the world’s first mobile-only premium entertainment platform. “Mobile phones are the most widely-distributed, democra- tized entertainment platform the world has ever seen,” Katzenberg said. The idea behind the platform is to deliver movie- quality experiences in quick bites (known as Quibis) for Millennial and Gen Z audiences that take advantage of all of the capabilities modern smartphones offer. To do so, Quibi had to tackle the usual challenges that come with mobile viewing, including the inability to watch content in both portrait and landscape modes. “It means creating a technology platform optimized for people on the go and giving them a great entertainment experience in those in-between moments,” Whit- man said. “We’re not shrinking TV onto phones. We’re creating something new.” Chief product officer Tom Conrad took to the stage to unveil Turnstyle, a new way to watch that allows viewers to move between a full-screen landscape mode and a full-screen portrait mode experience at any time. Conrad illustrated Turnstyle by showing the short film “Nest.” When the phone was held in portrait mode, viewers were able to see an intruder trying to break into a woman’s house through her Google Nest doorbell camera. -

Achieving "The Franchise": the Comcast-Nbc Universal Merger and the New Media Marketplace
ACHIEVING "THE FRANCHISE": THE COMCAST-NBC UNIVERSAL MERGER AND THE NEW MEDIA MARKETPLACE Thomas Curtint I. INTRODUCTION In 1997, then-Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission ("FCC" or "Commission") Reed Hundt delivered a speech to the leaders of the cable industry in which he described the future of cable television in terms of what he called "the Franchise."' According to Hundt, this model "consists of the core package of the most popular TV channels and the most popular way to deliver them." Hundt acknowledged that the cable industry "has made huge inroads on the delivery side," and classified broadcast television as "the other side of the Franchise." 2 The Chairman further forecasted that "the core pro- gramming package may or may not be possessed by local broadcasters in the future."' Nearly thirteen years after Chairman Hundt foretold an all-in-one entertain- ment content and delivery service, the Comcast Corporation ("Comcast") is on its way to realizing this vision of "the Franchise," as the media delivery giant undertakes efforts to merge with NBC Universal.' If successful, the merger would give the nation's largest cable corporation control over NBC Univer- t J.D. Candidate, May 2011. 5 Things We Learned from Adweek's Bonnie Hammer Profile
5 Things We Learned from AdWeek's Bonnie Hammer Profile 04.21.2014 AdWeek published a lengthy profile of the normally press-shy NBCU Cable Entertainment boss Bonnie Hammer on Monday, and it's packed with insight into the direction the executive has been moving her properties in the year since she being elevated to her current gig. If there's one thing that AdWeek's Sam Thielman stresses over and over again, it's Hammer's laser-focus on the brand identity of each of the properties under her command, and how those clearer identities have made the properties more lucrative for the company. Hammer oversees USA, SyFy, Bravo, E!, Oxygen, G4, and Sprout, among other networks. "She's given Syfy a real identity and an audience, and she's done the same for USA," NBCU Vice Chairman Ron Meyer told the magazine. "It could have been a potpourri of miscellaneous shows that had nothing in common." The entire piece is worth a read. But our five key takeaways: 1. Hammer knows Oxygen needs fixing. And she's on it. Her team realized there was a problem when they did some research that showed Oxygen's viewers were all over the demographic map. Some shows drew 12-year olds, while others skewed 55-plus. "From an ad-sales perspective, it was hard to sell," Hammer told AdWeek. So her team is forging a new brand identity for the female-centic network: aspirational twenty-somethings, just out of school or starting their adult lives. This group has some discretionary money, but not a lot, and are less secure in their positions. "They're a bit more authentic and real because they're coming out of the millennial world," she says. -
Steve Burke Chief Executive Officer Nbcuniversal 30 Rockefeller Plaza New York, NY 10112 Jeff Shell Incoming Chief Executive
Steve Burke Chief Executive Officer NBCUniversal 30 Rockefeller Plaza New York, NY 10112 Jeff Shell Incoming Chief Executive Officer NBC Universal 30 Rockefeller Plaza New York, NY 10112 December 17th, 2019 Dear Mr. Burke and Mr. Shell, We write as members of the New York State Legislature to express our concern about allegations of a toxic workplace environment at NBCUniversal. There is growing evidence of a culture that silences victims of harassment and those who report inappropriate workplace behavior at NBC. NBCUniversal’s recent decision not to renew Gabrielle Union’s contract on America’s Got Talent is just the latest example of a concerning pattern of behavior on the part of NBC. Union was allegedly let go after raising concerns about racist jokes made on set and having been told repeatedly that her hairstyles were “too black.” These allegations represent unacceptable workplace behavior that no one should be subject to, let alone terminated for reporting. We are grateful that NBC has committed to Union that they will investigate her allegations and termination. However, NBC must be transparent about the findings of their investigation and take concrete steps to reform the toxic culture throughout the company. Union’s experience is only one example of the systemic silencing of victims of harassment and those who have spoken up at NBC. As reported extensively by Ronan Farrow and others, NBC ignored complaints of sexual misconduct against Matt Lauer and stymied Farrow’s reporting on Harvey Weinstein while at NBC. Farrow has also reported that at least seven women have signed non-disclosure agreements with the company after alleging sexual harassment, including individuals who made complaints about Lauer before November 2017. -
