It will have about 120 suites and conference facilities. Contract investment 280 million ZAR Capacity 40,000 Jobs created 2,205 Technology Used BEKA’s Stadium Controller (with WAGO’s 0750-0841 Industrial Ethernet Controller and Remote I/O) was designed to control and protect the stadium’s flood lights through a selection of four scenes. These scenes differed in the application of the pitch (from practice through to televised international games). Flood lights get switched on in sequence which allows the stadium to keep a low maximum energy demand and lights with the lowest usage time will be switched on first, helping save overall flood light life time. With power outages, the controller allows the flood lights to cool down before they can be switched on again, which protects and extends the flood light’s life time. The Rea Vaya is a joint project between the City of Johannesburg and private partners. The development of low -carbon transport in Johannesburg has positioned the City as a leader in tackling climate change and now serves as an example for other African cities. ISSUE With increasing congestion on the roads, a rapidly growing population and an inadequate public transportation system, Johannesburg has faced the challenge of developing new transportation solutions that would not only be safe, affordable and fast, but would also improve the quality of life of its residents. In an effort to improve public transportation and address safety issues, and accelerated all the more by preparations for the 2010 World Cup, the City of Johannesburg launched a transportation action plan in 2005 to move toward a more sustainable, low-carbon transport system. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES By 2020, the City plans to roll out 122 kilometers (75.8 miles) of mainline BRT corridors served by 150 stations and 250 kilometers (155.3 miles) of formal feeder routes. The long-term objective is to provide a network of some 330 kilometers (205 miles) of lanes that are easily accessible to more than 80% of the people of Johannesburg.

‘Bricks-and-mortar testimonies’: The interactive and dialogical features of the memorials and monuments of the June 16 1976 Soweto Uprisings By Ali Khangela Hlongwane Introduction Physical forms of public memory have been labelled ‘bricks-and-mortar testimonies’1 and have become a major feature in processes that reclaim and humanise public spaces in African townships. These townships are not residential places of choice. They were imposed as backyards for a labour force of so-called ‘sojourners’ who were expected to return to their ‘homelands’ when they no longer fulfilled the labour needs of the urban areas. Consequently, the residents of the townships were not only socially degraded as people but they were also trapped, through the use of various laws, into living in a dehumanising landscape. The township became known for its inadequate and under-resourced schools, libraries, recreation amenities and health facilities. Residents of these townships responded in part by affirming their humanity in various ways, including innovative reconfigurations of their homes (popularly known as matchbox houses), as well as of the public spaces of their neighbourhoods. Writer and educationist, Es’kia Mphahlele, observed the following interventions on the built environment of the township:2 When we occupy a municipal house, we break down walls, punch new doorways, rearrange the rooms, make extensions, to adapt the dwelling to our practical needs and aesthetics. Mphahlele’s observation is both a literal and a figurative feature of the human settlements of most African townships. It is literal in the sense that a number of homes were changed over the years by the residents, to meet their practical needs and aesthetic tastes; which also became a negation of the imposed built environment 1 C.L.

The time span is chosen to cover the period of preparations for the 2010 World Cup as well as time after the event (until 2013 when our data sample in the paper ends). The reason for extending the time span beyond 2010 is that some projects related to the World Cup, that are of interest for our study, started before the World Cup but continued after 2010. The whole list includes 127 projects, divided into 8 categories:1 • Airports • Stadiums • Training stadiums • Water projects • Road projects • Public transport projects • Rail projects • Other transport and logistics projects Among all these projects, 72 are explicitly related to the 2010 World Cup and classiﬁed as a treatment in the paper. In the baseline analysis, we consider as treatment those 61 World Cup related projects that have been conducted in nine municipalities with a World Cup venue.

SPORT & RECREATION 245 Pocket Guide to South Africa 2010/11 SPORT & RECREATION From 11 June to 11 July 2010, South Africa successfully hosted the 2010 FIFA World CupTM, which saw 32 teams and an estimated 450 000 ticket holders converge on South Africa. The success of the tournament showed the power of sport and recreation in nation-building as well as economic and social development. Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) intends carrying this forward by contributing towards transforming South Africa into a country that truly reflects the diversity of its people. The SRSA has a number of flagship programmes through which it implements its objectives. Athletics World champion in the 800 m, Mbulaeni Mulaudzi, won the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) Challenge in Madrid, Spain, in July 2010. Luvo Manyonga won the long jump gold medal at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada, in July 2010. In the same month, Simon Magakwe claimed victory in the 200 m at the Weltklasse in Biberach Meeting in Germany. Cricket South Africa beat India by an innings and six runs despite a fighting century by Sachin Tendulkar on the fourth day of the first Test in February 2010 to go 1-0 up in the two-match series.
