RANCH HORSE

Ground-Handling- This class tests the handler’s ability to communicate with the horse from the ground by judging a series of maneuvers that require the horse to yield to pressure – forward, backward, and laterally. Maneuvers are selected to be realistic in their application to everyday training. Exhibitor movements should be workmanlike and efficient and the horse should be obedient and cooperative. Evaluating safe and effective ground handling will take priority to the quality of attire or tack.

Pleasure-horse should reflect the versatility, attitude, and movement of a working horse. The horse’s performance should simulate a horse riding outside the confines of an arena and that of a working ranch horse. This class should show the horse’s ability to work at a forward, working speed, while under control by the rider. Light contact should be rewarded and horse shall not be shown on loosely draped reins. The overall manners and responsiveness of the horse while performing the maneuver requirements and the horse’s quality of movement are the primary considerations.

Ranch Riding-The purpose of the ranch riding class is to measure the ability of the horse to be a pleasure to ride while being used as a means of conveyance from performing one ranch task to another. The horse should reflect the versatility, attitude and movement of a working ranch horse riding outside the confines of an arena. The horse should be well-trained, relaxed, quiet, soft and cadenced at all gaits.

Trail-This class is designed to show the horse’s ability to navigate and cope with the various situations and obstacles encountered in everyday ranch work. It is designed to show a horse’s ability to perform these obstacles with a willing attitude. The horse is judged on cleanness and promptness with which the obstacles are negotiated, ability to negotiate obstacles correctly, and attitude and mannerisms exhibited by the horse while negotiating the course.

WESTERN HORSEMANSHIP

The western horsemanship class is designed to evaluate the rider’s ability to execute, in concert with their horse, a set of maneuvers prescribed by the judge with precision and smoothness while exhibiting poise and confidence, and maintaining a balanced, functional and fundamentally correct body position. The ideal horsemanship pattern is extremely precise with the rider and horse working in complete unison, executing each maneuver with subtle aids and cues. All exhibitors must enter the ring and then work individually or each exhibitor may be worked from the gate individually.

DRIVING

Pleasure Driving- The horse should have basically the same general qualities as the pleasure saddle horse. Special emphasis is placed on the flat-footed walk and the pleasurability of the ride for the driver. The horse should be in balance with a head and neck carriage typical of its breed or type, should be light- mouthed, and have a free way of moving.

12 Reinsmanship-Judged as an equitation class on hands, proper harnessing, hitching, and correct driving techniques. Driver should be able to change gaits quickly, smoothly, and unobtrusively while always maintaining contact and using correct driving techniques.

90% on handling of reins and whip, control, posture, and overall appearance of the driver. 10% on proper harnessing and hitching, condition of harness and vehicle, and neatness of attire.

Driving Obstacle- To be judged similar to an in-hand obstacle/Trail class. Class will be judged on performance, manners, and suitability

Freestyle

Get creative and put together a freestyle that showcases your relationship with your horse. Entries are limited to 10 exhibitors per class, and are on a first come registration basis with priority given to our last year Seniors. As a general guideline: Freestyles should be set to music and no more than 2-2 1/2minutes in length. Music may not be sexually explicit or contain profanity, helmets must be worn and all costumes must be safe (no bare feet on riders, nothing covering the eyes of horse or rider, costume cannot interfere with the ability to control the horse) and 4-H appropriate. All patterns must start at the center of the arena and music must be edited and turned into the show office upon exhibitor check-in.

Eastern States Exhibition, INC would like to inform all potential equine exhibitors that during the months of July and August 2018, it was determined that the Corona virus was located on the grounds located 1305 Memorial Ave., West Springfield, Massachusetts 01089 (hereinafter referred to as “the Fairgrounds”). More than one horse was confirmed to have contracted the Corona virus after attending a show at the Fairgrounds – on during the summer of 2018, and one during the fall of 2018. Corona virus may cause the following symptoms in equines: fever, anorexia, colic, diarrhea, and sometimes death. Measures were taken to disinfect the Fairgrounds consistent with the recommendations of the Massachusetts State Veterinarian and Massachusetts Department of Health. There is no way to be 100% certain that the virus has been eradicated, and equines visiting the Fairgrounds may be exposed to Corona virus, as well as other infectious diseases caused by bacteria and/or viruses. Eastern States Exhibition, INC feels it is their duty to inform you of these occurrences and the risks associated with them. If you choose to participate in any function held at the Fairgrounds, you do so with full knowledge of the past presence of Corona virus. STATEMENT OF RISK ASSOCIATED WITH INFECTIOUS DISEASE: Infectious disease is a risk in any venue where equines come from different locations and gather in one centralized location. The Fairgrounds hosts numerous equine events throughout the year, and many equines visit and stay overnight on the Fairgrounds. An equine can be a carrier for many infectious diseases without displaying any symptoms. These carrier equines can then pass the infectious disease to other equines in close proximity to them, or sharing the same space, either at the same time or sometime in the future. Eastern States Exposition, INC has taken reasonable measures, recommended by Massachusetts authorities, to disinfect and prevent the spread of infectious disease among the Equines visiting the Fairgrounds, however, bringing an equine to the Fairgrounds is not without risk. Exposure to infectious disease can and has happened. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF RISKS:

I, ______, acknowledge I have read the above notice and I am fully aware of the presence of Corona Virus at the Fairgrounds during the 2019 show season, as well as the possibility of the presence of other infectious diseases which have not been identified. Being fully informed, I have decided of my own free will to participate in an equine function and bring equines onto the Fairgrounds. I, the undersigned for myself, my heirs, my representatives, my assigns, and my next of kin, in consideration of being allowed to bring equines onto the Fairgrounds, do fully and forever release, waive, discharge, hold harmless, and covenant not to sue Eastern States Exhibition, INC. for any and all claims, demands, suits, loss, and causes of action arising from any injury, illness, death, loss of use, or damage of any kind suffered from bringing equines onto the Fairgrounds whether arising from the negligence of Eastern States Exhibition, INC., or otherwise, to the fullest extent of the law, including attorney’s fees on appeal. I HAVE READ THIS RELEASE OF LIABILITY AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK AGREEMENT, FULLY UNDERSTOOD ITS TERMS, UNDERSTAND THAT I HAVE GIVEN UP SUBSTANTIAL RIGHTS BY SIGNING IT, AND SIGN IT VOLUNTARILY WITHOUT ANY INDUCEMENT. I WANT TO BRING EQUINES ONTO THE FAIRGROUNDS.
