Frequently, the base maps were updated by direct application of overlays, so that they afford a physical record of change over time. This portion from Sanborn's Insurance Maps of Baltimore, Md., showing a section of Edmondson Avenue just west of Hilton Street, was originally published in 1914, when development had just begun; subsequent overlays (slightly lighter in the photo) included additional development to 1927. Structures are color-coded by building material, with red representing brick, yellow for frame, and blue for cement block. Letter designations distinguish between dwellings ("D"), stores ("S"), and garages ("A"), while other struc- tures—churches, schools, workplaces—are identified by name. Intended to provide detailed information of practical contemporary application for insurance underwriters, the maps are a valuable source for local historians as well. The termination of this grand and sublime phenomenon will probably be witnessed from the summit of some of those stupendous monuments of ancient industry and folly, the vast and lofty pyramids on the banks of the Nile in lower Egypt. The principal cities and places that will be to- tally shadowed in this eclipse, are Valparaiso, Mendoza, Cordova, Assumption, St. Salvador and Pernambuco, in South America, and Sierra Leone, Teemboo, Tombucto and Fezzan, in Africa. At each of these places the duration of total darkness will be from one to six minutes, and several of the planets and fixed stars will probably be visible. 2. The other will also be a grand and beautiful eclipse, on Satur- day, September 7th, at 5h. 35m. evening, but on account of the Mnon's low latitude, and happening so late in the afternoon, no part of it will be visible in North America.

When, in 1826, James Sniithson bequeathed his estate to the United ' States of America ' to found at Washington , under the name of the Smithsonian Institution, an estabhshment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men," he placed at the disposal of our nation two valuable collections—one of books and one of minerals. In the schedule of Sniithson' s personal effects, as brought to America in 1838, occurs the following entry : Two large boxes filled with specimens of minerals and manuscript treatises, apparently in the testator's handwriting, on various philosophical subjects, particu- larly chemistry and mineralogy. Eight cases and one trunk filled with the like. This collection and the books and pamphlets mentioned in the same schedule formed the beginnings, respecti\-ely, of the Smithsonian library and the Smithsonian museum. The minerals constituted, so far as the writer has l)een able to learn, the first scientific cabinet owned by the Government of the United States. Their destruction in the Smithsonian fire of 1865 was a serious loss. Our only knowledge of their character is derived from the report of a comniittee of the National Institution, which in 1841 reported upon it as follows : Among the effects of the late ]Mr. Sniithson, is a Cabinet which, so far as it has been examined, proves to consist of a choice and beautiful collection of Minerals, comprising, probably, eight or ten thousand specimens.

Director: Stephen West The Congressional debates leading to the Compromise of 1850 represented a critical turning point in the United States’ sectional crisis, and were the product of a contest between differing conceptions of national identity. This study examines the actions, motivations, ideologies, and principles of members of Congress and the executive branch to determine how their respective national ideals were reflected in their proposals for defusing the territorial crisis, and how the interactions of ideological principles and personal rivalries influenced legislation that impacted the political order of the 1850s. The study utilizes transcripts of Congressional debates, manuscript collections, newspaper articles, and voting analysis. It identifies three competing visions of nationalism in the 31st Congress, termed Unionists, transformational nationalists, and Southern nationalists, and describes how the territorial crisis was influenced by and in turn influenced the development of these visions. Shaun Wallace Date of Submission: September 2017 This thesis is submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts and Humanities University of Stirling 3 Abstract This dissertation is a systematic investigation of fugitive slave advertisements aiming to understand the nature of fugitives’ rebelliousness in Georgia and Maryland between 1790 and 1810. Hitherto, historical inquiry pertaining to slave fugitivity has focused on other states and other times. This study provides a close reading of 5,567 advertisements pertaining to runaway slaves and analyses extracted data pertaining to the prosopography of 1,832 fugitives and their fugitivity. Its main research questions focus on advertisements as manifest records of rebellion. Who were the fugitives? What do the fugitive slave advertisements reveal about enslaved people’s contestation of slaveholders’ authority? The principal findings are as follows. First, the typography and iconography of fugitive slave advertisements were expressly intended to undermine the individualism and agency of enslaved people. Second, with regard to Georgia and Maryland, while there were spikes between 1796 and 1798 and 1800 and 1801, fugitivity was a daily occurrence, and thus a normative act of rebellion distinct from insurrection. Third, quantitative analysis indicated fugitives were typically young males, in their twenties, likely to escape at any time of the year; Georgia fugitives were more likely to escape in groups. Fourth, qualitative analysis of advertisers’ descriptions of fugitives revealed evidence of challenges to their authority. Depictions of fugitives’ character and remarks or notes on their behaviour constitute evidence of observed characteristics.
