9 Honor Roll of Donors Joe Distefano – Multi-Skilled Volunteer Making a Difference

While Joe Distefano hasn’t filled all 200 volunteer roles at Hartford Hospital, he clearly has been one of its most multi-skilled volunteers for many years.

“And the saying, ‘a jack of all trades and a master of none’ doesn’t apply to Joe,” noted Kelley Boothby, co-director of Volunteer Services. “He is the best at everything he does.”

Joe began volunteering at Hartford Hospital early in 1998 and has since contributed nearly 6,000 hours of service.

He started as a Patient Representative, visiting newly admitted patients and advising them of the variety of services offered to make their stay more comfortable. Joe also made sure the patients were aware of their rights and resolved any questions or concerns he could.

When one day a week wasn’t enough, Joe soon added the Surgical Family Lounge Representative role to his schedule. As a liaison, he tracked patients, communicated with the operating room, recovery area and the doctors, and made sure families were updated on the status of their loved ones.

“There’s such a sense of joy helping people when they have so much to worry about,” said Joe, “and such satisfaction in being part of the solution to their problem just by being with them.”

During the winter of 2000, Joe decided he could volunteer more hours from home. After completing the required training, he became a Trauma After Care volunteer. Through monthly phone calls and cards, he supported families who had suffered the loss of a loved one as a result of a traumatic death.

As if he wasn’t busy enough, Joe was commissioned and began serving the Pastoral Services Department as a Eucharistic Minister in 2001 – a familiar role, as he ministered in the community after retiring as a housing inspector for the City of Hartford in 1990.

“Even before ministering at the hospital, it was a way of giving something back to the community,” said Joe. “People are just so grateful for you being there through the appreciation and the tears.”

Joe also staffed the information desk in the Hospital’s main lobby and was trained to assist patients and families in the Emergency Department.

For health reasons, Joe was forced to curtail his three-days-a-week volunteering last year, but he plans to continue his service when he’s fully recovered from a hip replacement.

Volunteering means so much to me,” added Joe. If my health permits it, I’m looking forward to continuing to make a difference.

14 Hartford Hospital, 2010 Of the more than 850 guests who attended Hartford Hospital’s 2010 Black & Red, chances are no one enjoyed the elegant event at The Bushnell more than George Cruz, Michael Tutler and Erin Naspo. The presence of the three former cardiac surgery patients underscored the excellence of the Henry Low Heart Center and its exceptionally skilled heart surgeons. The three also served as living reminders of who would ultimately benefit from the fundraiser. Proceeds of more than $450,000 helped to expand the Hospital’s cardiac surgery program through the addition of dedicated intensive care rooms, with staffing and equipment to meet the special needs of heart surgery patients. The additional inpatient space allows the Hospital to offer more services to more patients. “It’s an exciting time to practice cardiac surgery at Hartford Hospital, and there’s never been a better time to be a cardiac surgery patient here,” said Jonathan Hammond, M.D., Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Surgical Director of the Transplant Program. “With community support, the Henry Low Heart Center is leading the way regionally and fast becoming a renowned cardiac care center nationally – the type of destination hospital patients will cross the country for.” While embracing cutting-edge technologies that underlie that prominence, Robert Gallaghe r, M.D., Senior Staff, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, added that “we never lose sight of the tremendous impact we have on the lives of our patients and their families. Support from this event allows us to move forward into the future and make more and more heartbeats happen every day. ”

Special guests George, Michael and Erin know something about making heartbeats happen. In 2004, George underwent surgery with Dr. Paul Preissler to repair an aortic dissection. In 2007, Michael received a heart transplant by Dr. Hammond. And Erin is thankful to Dr. Gallagher for removing a tumor from her heart that same year.
