Writing Systems 43 3 Writing Systems PETER T. DANIELS Chapters on writing systems are very rare in surveys of linguistics – Trager (1974) and Mountford (1990) are the only ones that come to mind. For a cen- tury or so – since the realization that unwritten languages are as legitimate a field of study, and perhaps a more important one, than the world’s handful of literary languages – writing systems were (rightly) seen as secondary to phonological systems and (wrongly) set aside as unworthy of study or at best irrelevant to spoken language. The one exception was I. J. Gelb’s attempt (1952, reissued with additions and corrections 1963) to create a theory of writ- ing informed by the linguistics of his time. Gelb said that what he wrote was meant to be the first word, not the last word, on the subject, but no successors appeared until after his death in 1985.1 Although there have been few lin- guistic explorations of writing, a number of encyclopedic compilations have appeared, concerned largely with the historical development and diffusion of writing,2 though various popularizations, both new and old, tend to be less than accurate (Daniels 2000). Daniels and Bright (1996; The World’s Writing Systems: hereafter WWS) includes theoretical and historical materials but is primarily descriptive, providing for most contemporary and some earlier scripts information (not previously gathered together) on how they represent (the sounds of) the languages they record. This chapter begins with a historical-descriptive survey of the world’s writ- ing systems, and elements of a theory of writing follow. -
The Staves Package
The staves package Apostolos Syropoulos Xanthi, Greece [email protected] 2006/11/06 Abstract The staves package has been designed to provide an interface to the ice- landic font, designed by the author of this package. The font contains all “magical” staves presented on the Web site of the Icelandic Museum of Sor- cery and Witchcraft. In addition, the package provides a simple command to typeset Icelandic runes. Disclaimer Sorcery as a cultural phenomenon is studied by ethnologists. Becuase of this, the author believes that his work should be of interest to enthnologists, in particular, and people with an interest in (digital) typography, in general. However, the author does not believe that the glyphs of the font do actually have any “magical” power. Also, if someone will use them to perform any kind of “magical” ceremony, the author cannot be hold responsible for any such action and its consequences. 1 Introduction The staves package provides a simple interface to the icelandic font designed by this author. The font contain all the “magical” staves that are described at the Web site of the Icelandic Museum of Sorcery and Witchcraft (see http://www. galdrasyning.is/index.php?option=com_content&task=category§ionid= 5&id=18&Itemid=60 for more details). The data used comes almost exclusively from German (Hochlautung). The first chapter presents the 'raw facts' of FOD. Its purpose is to provide an outline of the sort of data to be accounted for in the remainder of the thesis. Previous treatments of FOD in German are discussed and evaluated in the second chapter. All of them are shown to be associated with a number of problems, many of which are artifacts of inadequate theoretical frameworks. The third and fourth chapters address the questions of what FOD is and where it occurs. -

Runes are ancient symbols that have been used for many years for magical and divination purposes. The word rune appropriately means ‘secret’ or ‘something hidden’. They can offer you the meanings and answers you are seeking from within. Many argue that runes can be used to predict future events. However, another large part of the community believes runes and other various forms of divination are used to find answers within yourself. The idea is that you already have the answers that you seek, you just may need a little intervention and interpretation from the Divine and the Universe to bring them to the surface. The three best-known runic alphabets are the Elder Futhark (around 150–800 AD), the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc (400–1100 AD), and the Younger Futhark (800–1100 AD). The most widely used and agreed upon seems to be the Elder Futhark set. The Elder Futhark consists of 24 runes that often are arranged in three groups of eight; each group is referred to as an Ætt. The earliest known sequential listing of the full set of 24 runes dates to approximately CE 400 and is found on the Kylver Stone in Gotland, Sweden. Looking For Mr Wednesday: Towards An Odian Philosophical Framework Abstract Christopher Jon Sharp The thesis explores the theory and praxis of Odianism in order to articulate the fundamentals of a possible philosophical framework underpinning the Odian paradigm of reality. It is argued that Odian magical praxis needs to be understood as a discrete category of experience offering a specific understanding of and a particular route to self- becoming. Magic is a problematic category to define and shares fuzzy boundaries with a number of other concepts related to non-ordinary states of consciousness. The thesis seeks initially to clarify the specific nature of magic and to contextualise Odianism within the broader Western Mystery Tradition. The main body of the thesis considers the philosophical framework proposed by contemporary Odianism. This narrowing of focus is inevitably limiting, but necessary to allow a sufficiently detailed examination of a particular approach to magical praxis. The thesis explores Odian epistemological, ontological and ethical positions. Odian magical praxis is examined in the context of those philosophical perspectives. Particular attention is paid to the concept of Odian self-development or Self-becoming. -

LINGUISTICS Putting the Elder Futhark into a Young Spiritualism: A Semantic Analysis of an Odinist Divination Guidebook Ashton Corsetti, Associates of Science, Bachelor's of English- Professional and Technical Writing Emphasis (in progress)* Keywords: old norwegian, elder futhark, spiritualism, old english, runes Curiosity: Interdisciplinary Journal of Research and Innovation Vol. 1, Issue 1, 2020 The Nordic people embodied the Elder Futhark runes—the oldest-known form of the Germanic writing system—with esotericism (knowledge available only to a small group of people), seeing them as a direct line of communication to divinity. This mystical significance has been reintroduced to neopagan groups through guidebooks on runecasting, a divinatory practice in which the runes are interpreted negatively or positively depending on how they land. This analysis checks the interpretations of a popular Odinist writer against secular scholarship, evaluating for both semantic authenticity in the Germanic tradition and runic symbolism within Odinism—a modern religious sect based on pre-Christian roots in Northern Europe. All 24 runes are separated into three groups of eight depending on their relationship to the Old English and Old Norwegian rune poems, both of which are involved in the reconstruction of runic etymology. The findings indicate a range of ideological terminologies that either stem from intellectual obscurity or are anachronistic when compared to Germanic traditions. This illustrates a spiritual appropriation of the runic symbols rather than a return to pre-Christian concepts, thus disqualifying the text as a source of scholarship.
