This age requires and allows some new approaches to be sure. We have changed over the centuries in question. But at the same time we are as traditional as possible. The Gild does not fear innovation - in fact we embrace it - but only after the tradition has been thoroughly examined for all it has to offer. Too often in the history of the runic revival various proponents have actually taken their preconceived notions about what the Runes should say- and then "runicized" them. We avoid this type of pseudo-innovation at all costs. Our over-all magical method is a simple one. The tradition posits an outer world (objective reality) and an inner-world (subjective reality). The work of the Runer is the exploration of both of these worlds for what they have to offer in the search for wisdom. In learning the Runes, the Runer synthesizes all the objective lore and tradition he can find on the Runes with his subjective experience. In this way he "makes the Runes his own." All the Runes and their overall system are then used as a sort of "meta-Ianguage" in meaningful communication between these objective and subjective realities. The Runer may wish to be active in this communication - to cause changes to occur in accordance with his will, or he may wish to learn from one of these realities some information which would normally be hidden from him. -

Writing Systems 43 3 Writing Systems PETER T. DANIELS Chapters on writing systems are very rare in surveys of linguistics – Trager (1974) and Mountford (1990) are the only ones that come to mind. For a cen- tury or so – since the realization that unwritten languages are as legitimate a field of study, and perhaps a more important one, than the world’s handful of literary languages – writing systems were (rightly) seen as secondary to phonological systems and (wrongly) set aside as unworthy of study or at best irrelevant to spoken language. The one exception was I. J. Gelb’s attempt (1952, reissued with additions and corrections 1963) to create a theory of writ- ing informed by the linguistics of his time. Gelb said that what he wrote was meant to be the first word, not the last word, on the subject, but no successors appeared until after his death in 1985.1 Although there have been few lin- guistic explorations of writing, a number of encyclopedic compilations have appeared, concerned largely with the historical development and diffusion of writing,2 though various popularizations, both new and old, tend to be less than accurate (Daniels 2000). Daniels and Bright (1996; The World’s Writing Systems: hereafter WWS) includes theoretical and historical materials but is primarily descriptive, providing for most contemporary and some earlier scripts information (not previously gathered together) on how they represent (the sounds of) the languages they record. This chapter begins with a historical-descriptive survey of the world’s writ- ing systems, and elements of a theory of writing follow. -

Try allowing your lips to soften and the sound to come very gently, almost as a whisper. Spend time exploring the shape of the rune. What does it remind you of? How does it feel to make the shape with your body? The modern English ‘m’ is the direct descendent of Mannaz. Look for words in Eng- lish as well as the other Germanic languages using the letter ’e’. Examples tracing back to Old English include: man, make, might (strength), mind, may (’to be allowed to/ could’), magistrate, master, maiden, mother, murder, mouth, many, meadow, martyr, meal, mast, mark, mead, moon, month, milk, much, middle Draw Mannaz on your diary/ bullet journal/ doodles/ shopping lists Wear a Mannaz pendant, draw it on you body, put a picture by your bed and/or on your home altar Look for Mannaz in the shapes around you. The branches of trees, man made struc- tures and patterns are good places to find runes. Meditate or write about how Mannaz is turning up in your life The Rune Poems The rune poems are the oldest source of our knowledge about each rune. Some runes have three poems, some one. Let them sit lightly with you. Enjoy them. The point of po- etry is to stir imagining; and our ancestors were particularly fond of riddles. -

They are an ancient Germanic alphabet that has been dated back to the 3rd century. It is thought that they were first used for divination purposes and later for writing and record keeping. Legend has it that Odin, the Norse High God of the Aesir, hung from the world tree (Yggdrasil), impaled on his own spear for nine days and nights in order to gain the knowledge of runes. -

Information about the symbol of hatred Life Rune Other names: The “life rune” is also known as the Algiz or Elhaz rune. There is another variation of this symbol called the Mannaz rune. Origin: The “life rune” is the fifteenth letter of the Futhark alphabet, an ancient Germanic script mainly found in Scandinavia and the British Isles. The Algiz variation means "moose,” while the Mannaz variation means “man” or “person.” Uses: The symbol denotes the sounds [z] or [ks] in runic writing. Modern neo-pagans who have no connection to Nazism or other far-right ideologies also use it. Guido von List — an Austrian occultist in the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth century, who had a significant influence on the development of occultism within Nazism — founded an esoteric, occult ideological movement called Armanism. Von List included a symbol he described as the “life rune” in his version of the Futhark alphabet, along with an inverted version, interpreted as the “death rune.” List’s teachings were followed in Nazi Germany, where this rune was used widely to denote life, as well as health, family life, and the birth of children. It was included in the emblems of several organizations in Nazi Germany, including the National Socialist Women's League, the Lebensborn (an SS unit tasked with increasing the birth rate of "racially pure Aryan" children and later abducting children for "Aryanization"), and various other women's and medical groups. Use as a hate symbol: Among modern neo-Nazis this rune symbolizes "life" and the so-called "life force of the nation." It is one of the most common neo-Nazi symbols and is used widely by members of the Far Right in various countries as a marker of Nazi, neo-Nazi, and racist views. -

Looking For Mr Wednesday: Towards An Odian Philosophical Framework Abstract Christopher Jon Sharp The thesis explores the theory and praxis of Odianism in order to articulate the fundamentals of a possible philosophical framework underpinning the Odian paradigm of reality. It is argued that Odian magical praxis needs to be understood as a discrete category of experience offering a specific understanding of and a particular route to self- becoming. Magic is a problematic category to define and shares fuzzy boundaries with a number of other concepts related to non-ordinary states of consciousness. The thesis seeks initially to clarify the specific nature of magic and to contextualise Odianism within the broader Western Mystery Tradition. The main body of the thesis considers the philosophical framework proposed by contemporary Odianism. This narrowing of focus is inevitably limiting, but necessary to allow a sufficiently detailed examination of a particular approach to magical praxis. The thesis explores Odian epistemological, ontological and ethical positions. Odian magical praxis is examined in the context of those philosophical perspectives. Particular attention is paid to the concept of Odian self-development or Self-becoming. -

LINGUISTICS Putting the Elder Futhark into a Young Spiritualism: A Semantic Analysis of an Odinist Divination Guidebook Ashton Corsetti, Associates of Science, Bachelor's of English- Professional and Technical Writing Emphasis (in progress)* Keywords: old norwegian, elder futhark, spiritualism, old english, runes Curiosity: Interdisciplinary Journal of Research and Innovation Vol. 1, Issue 1, 2020 The Nordic people embodied the Elder Futhark runes—the oldest-known form of the Germanic writing system—with esotericism (knowledge available only to a small group of people), seeing them as a direct line of communication to divinity. This mystical significance has been reintroduced to neopagan groups through guidebooks on runecasting, a divinatory practice in which the runes are interpreted negatively or positively depending on how they land. This analysis checks the interpretations of a popular Odinist writer against secular scholarship, evaluating for both semantic authenticity in the Germanic tradition and runic symbolism within Odinism—a modern religious sect based on pre-Christian roots in Northern Europe. All 24 runes are separated into three groups of eight depending on their relationship to the Old English and Old Norwegian rune poems, both of which are involved in the reconstruction of runic etymology. The findings indicate a range of ideological terminologies that either stem from intellectual obscurity or are anachronistic when compared to Germanic traditions. This illustrates a spiritual appropriation of the runic symbols rather than a return to pre-Christian concepts, thus disqualifying the text as a source of scholarship. -
