It was the warrior-monks, scattered Imperialists and their Emperor running amok in the mountains. MASASHIGE stretched his gambit with creative warfare. He built AKASAKA in KAWACHI and defended it with hidden flank attacks, huge rolling logs and the liberal use of boiling pitch and water. On the last night, sneaking off small groups, he buffaloed the entire HOJO force by leaving a gigantic and dramatically set funeral pyre with one sobbing attendant claiming the great KUSUNOKI Clan had found their destiny with mass suicide. -

Morley for the degree of Master ofArts in the Interdisciplinary Studies Program: Asian Studies to be taken June 2009 Title: THE GODDESSES' SHRINE FAMILY: THE MUNAKATA THROUGH THE KAMAKURA ERA This thesis presents an historical study ofthe Kyushu shrine family known as the Munakata, beginning in the fourth century and ending with the onset ofJapan's medieval age in the fourteenth century. The tutelary deities ofthe Munakata Shrine are held to be the progeny ofthe Sun Goddess, the most powerful deity in the Shinto pantheon; this fact speaks to the long-standing historical relationship the Munakata enjoyed with Japan's ruling elites. Traditional tropes ofJapanese history have generally cast Kyushu as the periphery ofJapanese civilization, but in light ofrecent scholarship, this view has become untenable. Drawing upon extensive primary source material, this thesis will provide a detailed narrative ofMunakata family history while also building upon current trends in Japanese historiography that locate Kyushu within a broader East Asian cultural matrix and reveal it to be a central locus of cultural production on the Japanese archipelago. -

On Recent Readings of Shinran DENNIS HIROTA 1. Common Readings of Shinran: A Paradigm of Bifurcation Shinran’s thought has received a sparseness of attention in the West quite out of proportion to the originality of his achievement and the place of his Shin movement in Japanese society and in the history of Buddhist tradition as a whole.1 There is widespread agreement among most commentators that the chief reason for this imbalance in modem Western Buddhist studies, even given the early marginalization of Japanese Buddhist traditions as being far removed from the doctrines and practices of ‘original’ Buddhism, lies in the close resemblance of fundamental Shin symbols and concepts to those of Protestant Christianity. Jan van Bragt, a Catholic priest with long experience in Japan, characterizes the common attitude: [T]he West is mainly interested in Buddhism as its antipode, part ly in distrust of its own religious tradition. It is therefore most attracted to these forms of Buddhism wherein that antipodal char acter appears most clearly—Theravada, Zen, Tibetan Buddhism. The Pure Land school, on the other hand, is perceived as very close to Christianity and far removed from the mainstream of Buddhism.2 While this general account of the interests of many Western Buddhist schol ars may be accurate, I believe that further analysis of the dominant views of Shin may be useful, for even in a case like van Bragt’s, awareness of the fun damental predisposition that has colored Western attitudes toward Japanese 1 Regarding Western interpretations of Shin tradition, see Amstutz 1997. 2 Bragt 1993, p. -

BANDITS, PIRATES, MERCHANTS AND FINANCIERS Bandits and Pirates Tosa Harbor was the base of the powerful Andô uji on the Tsugaru peninsula. As I discussed briefly in my “maritime” survey of Japanese history, the city reached the height of its prosperity in the fourteenth century, rivalling the prosperity of Hakata in northern Kyûshû. Tosa Harbor’s once lively downtown district has yielded to archaeologists large numbers of Chinese coins and porcelain as well as Koguryo (Korean) celadon. Indeed, from the fourteenth to the fifteenth centuries, Tosa Harbor may well have been the international hub of the north. To the far south, the city of Bônotsu on southern-most tip of Kyûshû welcomed many ships from the Asian continent from the twelfth century, and excavations in Kanzaki on the Ariake Bay have also uncovered large numbers of Chinese porcelains. But coastal towns are not the only places where Chinese porcelains have turned up. They have also been found in Niimi, up in the mountains of Okayama, demonstrating its close links to East Asia. But lurking beneath all these traces of trade lies a major problem for historians: what kind of political power guaranteed the flow of goods and bills of exchange? When “checks bounced,” or exchanges were deemed invalid, or when there was a dispute over bills, who could offer the guarantees that would resolve the disputes? The government at this time did not fulfill this function. The Imperial government in Kyôto, the military government in Kamakura, the managers of shôen and government lands focused their attention on the resolution of land disputes, 128 establishing procedures to handle such problems.
