Dedicado à Cristina e ao João David Advertência prévia Este trabalho corresponde à dissertação escrita pelo autor para obtenção do grau de doutoramento em Pré-História pela Universidade de Lisboa. A sua redacção ficou concluída em Abril de 1995, e a respectiva arguição teve lugar em Novembro do mesmo ano. A versão agora publicada beneficiou de pequenos ajustamentos do texto, de uma actualização da biliografia e do acrescento de alguns elementos de informação novos, nomeadamente no que diz respeito a datações radiométricas. A obra compreende dois volumes. No volume II agruparam-se os capítulos sobre a história da investigação e a metodologia utilizada na análise dos materiais líticos, bem como os estudos monográficos das diferentes colecções. No volume I, sintetizaram-se as conclusões derivadas desses estudos, e procurou-se integrá-las num quadro histórico e geográfico mais lato, o das sociedades de caçadores do Paleolítico Superior do Sudoeste da Europa. A leitura do volume I é suficiente para a aquisição de uma visão de conjunto dos conhecimentos actuais respeitantes a este período em Portugal. Uma tal leitura deve ter em conta, porém, que essa síntese pressupõe uma crítica das fontes utilizadas. Em Arqueologia, o instrumento dessa crítica é a análise tafonómica dos sítios e espólios. A argumentação sobre as respectivas condições de jazida é desenvolvida no quadro dos estudos apresentados no volume II. É neles que deve ser buscada a razão de ser das opções tomadas quanto à caracterização dos contextos (ocupações singulares, palimpsestos de ocupações múltiplas), à sua homogeneidade (uma só época ou várias épocas), à sua integridade (em posição primária ou secundária), à sua representatividade (universo ou amostra, recuperação integral ou parcial) e à sua cronologia (ou cronologias). -

INTRODUCCION 1 1. INTERES DEL TRABAJO Este trabajo estudia los restos óseos de mamíferos hallados en los yacimientos prehis- tóricos de Guipúzcoa. Con él pretendemos llenar el vacío existente en el conocimiento de la fauna de mamíferos de esta zona. Los trabajos de M. de la P. Graells y E. Harlé a finales del siglo pasado y comienzos del presente dieron una primera visión muy restringida de las faunas del Cantábrico. Los de I. del Pan, H. Obermaier, E. Hernández Pacheco, el Conde de la Vega del Sella, etc., por citar sólo los clásicos del primer cuarto de siglo, ampliaron mucho el conocimiento sobre las faunas de Asturias y Santander. Los de T. de Aranzadi, J. M. de Barandiarán y E. de Eguren añadieron más sumariamente datos de Vizcaya y de la parte occidental de Guipúzcoa. Era, pues, Guipúzcoa la provincia que contaba con menos datos para el conocimiento de su fauna cuaternaria de mamíferos. Por otra parte, la situación peculiar de la provirncia como región ligada al extremo occidental de la Cadena Pirenaica y como paso obligado durante la época glaciar entre el Continente y la Península, a la vez que presenta un acceso escalonado hacia la Meseta, más fácil que el que presentan Asturias y Santander, donde la Cordillera Can- tábrica forma una barrera más difícil al tránsito, ofrecía un campo amplio de interés paleonto- lógico, ecológico, climático y arqueológico. 2. The conclusion that has been popularized by this research is that the artists accurately depicted the animals as they saw them in their environment. It has long been evident that some artists of the European Ice Age caves were able to realize graphic memesis to a remarkable degree. This new study of the genome of ancient horses appears to confirm the artist’s intention of creating the actual appearance of dappled horses. I will question this conclusion as well as the relevance of this study to the art by examining the Spotted horses in the context of the entire panel and the panel in the context of the whole cave. To further enlarge our view, I will consider the use of similar dots and dappling in the rock art of other paleolithic people. The visual effect of dots will be seen in terms of their psychological impact. Discoveries by neuroscientists regarding the effect of such stimuli on human cognition will be mentioned. -

A la vez, la activación turística de estos espacios es un eje estratégico para el desarrollo rural. Este artículo analiza la importancia del turismo en cuevas en Cantabria, que aglutina la mayor densidad de cuevas de arte rupestre del mundo. Para visitantes y turistas, este tipo de turismo tiene un atractivo tanto cultural como natural. ABSTRACT From the discovery of a cave, the relationship between archaeology and tourism primarily considers issues such as conservation and sustainable development. Also, tourism activity later performs as strategic driver for rural development. This paper analyses the role of cave tourism in Cantabria, which agglutinates the world’s major density of caves. To visitors and tourists, motivations for cave tourism come from both cultural and natural factors. Key words: rock art, caves, natural areas, Spain, archaeological tourism, rural tourism.
