Rector's Question Time: 'I don't think that starving is the next option' Sir Eric Ash, Rector of Imperial College, took part in a question and answer session on Monday evening. Over a hundred students listened as Sir Eric fielded questions on a'wide range of student and non student issues. Union President , Mr Paul Shanley, chaired the discussion and took both prepared and spontaneous questions from the floor. Despite the controversial nature of many of the topics raised the atmosphere remained relaxed and somewhat informal. Although many questions centered on student concerns, money and accommodation - the lack of it, the presence of college staff ensured a broader base to the discussion. The most notable aspect of the discussion was the circular nature of many problems facing both student and staff alike; at the centre of that circle was money. In Sir Eric's own words 'people might find it hard to believe but before I came to Imperial I was not obsessed with money.' In answer to the question 'Now that the binary divide has gone, and that some polytechnics in London may achieve University status, is it time that Imperial should reconsider the benefits of London University and investigate opting out?' Sir Eric stated 'we haven't stopped thinking about it (opting out)'. He continued that althrinoh Imrwiiil '^a "6" iO run our own (university)', with Imperial Caught between the Devil and the deep blue sea gaining little benefit in terms of cut price deals organised through the University of investment of a loan. -

When I look back over my final comments last year (after nine issues), it sounded as if we had moved mountains. And in a way we had, starting from scratch to a full service publication some 140 stations deep. But in the 12 months since, it has become readily apparent that we were barely walking then. We've extended our reporter roster well past the 200 mark; Our New Alternative and Hard Rock sections have inspired numerous imitators, and our combi- nation of high technology and people power has effectively re -defined what a tip sheet can and will be in the years to come. -

Production Catalogue Production 1 Chair’s Note Chair’s Telling Irish stories on screen and supporting Irish creative talent telling these stories has always been a key focus of Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board (IFB). Over the past year we have shown that these stories are enjoyed by audiences both at home and globally and have again proven what we believe to be the strength of Irish creative talent on screen. We are working on two major initiatives in 2016: the launch of a five year strategy for the IFB and a joint IFB/BAI Strategy on Training. We expect to publish both of these reports in the spring of 2016. They will then form the basis of future planning and development across the sector in the coming years. In 2015, the IFB acknowledged the underrepresentation of women in the Irish film industry. This is an issue which cannot be ignored. Actions are needed to address the gender inequality issue and the IFB is concerned enough to act and take a lead on this matter. We have outlined the measures we will be taking to address the problem and we are eager to implement them in 2016 and beyond. I took the role of Acting Chair of the IFB this year after the sudden passing of our esteemed Chairman Bill O’Herlihy. In his two years as Chairman of the IFB, Bill was a tireless advocate of the Irish film industry and his hands-on approach to the role was a clear indicator of his enthusiasm. We at the IFB were proud to call him a colleague and a friend and he is greatly missed. -

This is the first major exhibition dedicated to Scottish pop music, exploring the musical culture of the nation over more than half a century, from influential indie pioneers to global superstars. From the days of the dancehalls and folk clubs to the emergence of pop in an explosion of colour in the 1960s, through the 1970s/early 1980s New Wave and post-punk, Rip It Up features global stars and independent local heroes from pop’s early days right up to today’s outstanding newcomers. Artists and bands featured include Lonnie Donegan, Gerry Rafferty, the Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Lulu, The Rezillos, Midge Ure, Simple Minds, The Skids, Big Country, Garbage, Franz Ferdinand, Young Fathers, and many more. The exhibition contains original stage outfits and instruments, many loaned by the artists themselves, plus memorabilia, props, film, videos and, of course, music. 1.
