THE CLASSIC BOAT REGATTA Saturday, June 16, 2012 The DYC is proud to host the Inaugural Detroit Classic Boat Regatta. This regatta serves as a celebration of the truly remarkable history of yacht racing in the Detroit area dating back to the 1800’s.

This regatta is open to any wood boat, any pre-1970 boat, and any boat with a design whose intent is to evoke the look of a classic yacht.

This event takes place the day before the DYC Father’s Day Boat show, which should make for an exciting weekend to marvel at some truly historic boats at our club.

All DYC members are welcome to come to the awards party near the Flying Scot shed after the race Saturday afternoon. more info at: www.detroitclassicboat.com 2 FROM THE COMMODORE COM. As with every May at the DYC, the Boating Committee offers a sum- mer season reconditioning course early on in the month. This year it falls on May 12th. After you are done celebrating the Vice Commodore's Ball, get cleaned up, grab a bite and join us for the DYC Annual Pub Crawl at 3pm. As with every year, Team Murphy spends months care- fully and secretly selecting our pub destinations. You can try to pry the locations out of Shelley, but if you've been around you'll know to expect a big smile and a "we'll just have to see." Be sure to sign up at www.dyc.com on the BOATING => RENDEZVOUS page. Even if you are not a boater, you are more than welcome to sign up and test your 'sea legs' with power boaters and sailors alike. Music, spirits, and party do-dads are encouraged on the bus ride as well. Bus space is limited so sign up right now. This month the Detroit Power Squadron is offering two great opportu- nities. The first is PFD Day on May 19th at our indoor pool. This event which kicks off National Boating Safety week is a chance to jump in the pool fully clothed wearing your personal flotation device. It may sound ridiculous, but the experience of being fully clothed in a life jacket is something that should be experienced prior to a real emergency, much like practicing shooting flares like we did in March. As with every year, we also have the luxury of being able to sign up for Vessel Safety Inspections May 25 - 27th. This service, again, offered by the Power Squadron will ensure that not only you have the proper safety gear, but also if you are stopped out on the water by law enforcement, you will not be fined for not having it. You can register for both online in the same page as the Pub Crawl. Be sure to visit the BOATING page on www.dyc.com for information including documentation which will help you prepare for the vessel safety checks, lake levels, no wake zones, and international traveling to Canada. Lastly, the Boating Committee has donated funds for the completion of numerous boating related projects. The funds raised on our ren- dezvous have restored our Weather Station in the Blue Hallway (with the invaluable help of an anonymous member), purchased radios for the Junior Sailing Program and new Harbor Office blinds. Anyone who has ideas for future boating improvement projects is free to attend the Boating Committee meetings which meet the third Tuesday of every month at 7pm in the Sweepstakes room, 3rd floor.

Harbor Opening Party At the start of the "2012 Boating Season" we are Sunday, April 15th operating within budget, meeting our obligations and are poised to reap the benefits of recent 2012 Harbor and House improvements. Expected bene- fits are improved member satisfaction as well as an increase in the rate at which we can grow our membership ranks. Our efforts to show off our "new and improved" Club along with our efforts to bring in additional members will have a substantial effect on our next financial steps. Help out by attending an Ambassador or Retention meeting; share your time, expertise, helping us grow our membership and our bottom line. Com. Barlow's Harbor Opening speech starts and ends on almost the same notes and contains similar sentiments, with permission I close with his words: "May the warm summer breeze fill your sails so you can win the race. May fuel prices be low and your transmission not blow, so you can cruise to the Round House for the show. May we have great weather for the Gold Cup Hydroplane Race and so it puts a smile on your face. And Lord, help us find 100 new members to enjoy this beautiful place. Cheers."
