Fellow DYC Members, Good News! As of January 21, 2011, we are now the "Historic" Detroit Yacht Club! Details on our "501c3" will follow from Treasurer Nowak… More Good News!!! DYC has secured the presenting sponsorship for the 2011 Gold Cup Races! After securing the contract with the DRRA, Alan Whitman was appointed chair of the Gold Cup Fundraising Committee. Fundraising will include a DYC sponsored VIP Party on May 6, 2011. Governor Snyder & Mayor Bing are among the many dignitaries invited. DRRA expects more than 600 people to attend. Our GM and Chef Ken promise an outstanding menu. A sports memorabilia auction will be part of the event. SAVE THE DATE!

Presenting sponsorship will allow us to showcase our Club to hundreds of potential members and give us exclusive advertising on Radio, TV and newspapers. It will be wonderful to see a DYC burgee on a majority of the hydroplane boats and to hear The "Historic" Yacht Club announced before every event.

Even More "Good News"!! The new Boutique is under construction! Also, the Ladies Locker Room flooring project will start on March 21st. Finally, the Board has accepted the gracious loan of the Boat Club's Art Works and Artifacts, and Joann Leo's decorating committee has selected the new color scheme for the lounge and grill.

The Officers' Ball was spectacular! Kudos to Chef Ken and his culinary team, the decorating committee, Jennifer, our MC, Mr. George Lucas and to Commodore Coleman's group, Swing Shift, for providing the wonderful music. A special thank you to Ms. Karen Newman for joining us and singing the National Anthems of the U.S. and Canada.

The Starboard Haven Lounge is now open Tuesday through Saturday with an enhanced menu. PLEASE USE YOUR CLUB.

See you at the Club. Commodore A.J. Telmos MD

FROM THE BOARDWALK TO THE BOARDROOM BY SECRETARY FRED CARR

Yes! Apparently you can teach an old dog a new trick or two. At least that is what Commodore Chiesa (1999), Commodore Maisner (2005) and Commodore Coltman (2010) attempted. Your Board, including its Trustees and some Club Management personnel, recently received training from them.

We all thought so highly of it, that we resolved to make this review of DYC Traditions and Board Member Responsibilities a requirement for all future Boards. This training increased our collec- tive awareness about getting the job done; the goal or task at hand is important, but so is the path taken. Transparency, responsiveness, duty and traditions were discussed, providing us a better understanding of our heritage and a clear vision of the path to take DYC into the future.

Motions made and approved this month again focused on increasing our membership numbers and improving our financial position: Membership Drive incentive package enhancements, extend existing credit line for an additional year, improved collection process for past due accounts, accepted works of art from the (on loan indefinitely).

Discussions included facilities project status, financial status, summer program preparations and staffing levels, website enhance- ments, banquet business, leveraging national press coverage about our historic designation, Gold Cup races, increasing member- ship's clubhouse utilization during the winter months and Talk with the Board Nights in the month of March. And that's the way it was from the Boardroom in, one of the snowiest on record, February, 2011. Comments, thoughts, ideas; please contact the Board via [email protected]

3 FROM THE VICE COMMODORE BY BRYAN BARLOW

I am very pleased to inform the DYC membership that the Detroit Boat Club has graciously loaned us numerous pieces of their beautiful art collection including valuable seascape oil paintings by well known artists, nautical prints and a large brass ships binnacle all to be displayed at DYC. The art has been under lock and key in a heated storage facility for many years and hasn't seen the light of day until this past January 2011. Their gift to DYC has been in the works for well over a year and has come to fruition thanks to the generosity of the DBC members, their Board and the vision to share the art with our club by Detroit Boat Club Commodores, Linda Cowles 2010 and Brian Higgins 2011. We plan to have the art displayed for all to enjoy this spring. A special thank you and salute to the Detroit Boat Club.

Motor City Gold Cup Sponsorship

More good news. By now you have read Commodore Telmos' article communicating to the membership that the Detroit Yacht Club will be the "Presenting Sponsor" of this years 2011 Motor City Gold Cup Hydroplane Race. The Gold Cup boat race is the equivalent of the Daytona 500 car race. Boat racing began here on the in front of our historic clubhouse and the Detroit Yacht Club name is synonymous with boat racing world wide. We will be in the Media and PR spot light throughout the city, suburbs, industry and local government. Other city clubs are already asking how they can participate and join in on the fun during Gold Cup week. With DYC being the Presenting Sponsor of this years Motor City Gold Cup race this is a great opportunity to showcase our Club.

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER PAUL HUGHES

The "Historic" Detroit Yacht Club Staff is in full throttle getting the Club ready for a great season. Crews are busy with the new Boutique, painting, repairing, and organizing many areas within our Club.

During our limited services period, many of you have asked to change up the Cook-Your-Own. So, we are going to take the enhanced Cook-Your-Own to the next level. Tuesday and Wednesday will be the traditional style that so many of you know. Now, Thursday through Saturday we will offer a limited bar menu in the Starboard Haven Lounge that you and your guests can enjoy from the bartenders from 6:00 to 10:00 pm. The menu will feature appetizers, salads, entrees, sandwiches and even pizza. Please join us for Enhanced Bar Fare.
