The Emergence of money The use of barter like methods may date back to at least 100,000 years ago. To organize production and to distribute goods and services among their populations, pre- market economies relied on tradition, top-down command, or community cooperation. Relations of reciprocity and/or redistribution substituted for market exchange. Trading in red ochre is attested in Swaziland. Shell jewellery in the form of strung beads also dates back to this period and had the basic attributes needed of commodity money. In cultures where metal working was unknown... shell or ivory jewellery was the most divisible, easily stored and transportable, relatively scarce, and impossible to counterfeit type of object that could be made into a coveted stylized ornament or trading object. It is highly unlikely that there were formal markets in 100,000 B.P. Nevertheless... something akin to our currently used concept of money was useful in frequent transactions of hunter-gatherer cultures, possibly for such things as bride purchase, prostitution, splitting possessions upon death, tribute, obtaining otherwise scarce objects or material, inter-tribal trade in hunting ground rights.. and acquiring handcrafted implements. All of these transactions suffer from some basic problems of barter — they require an improbable coincidence of wants or events. I decided I needed more shiny things, but pretty shiny things are extremely expensive. I figured I’d kill two birds with one stone and learn to make more shiny things myself, while saving some money. I chose to make a circlet for myself because it gave me the opportunity to make something particularly visible and gaudy. I used sterling silver, 14k gold, and fine silver, because only thralls wear brass, and chose sapphire and amber cabochons to mount on it, because my arms are Or and Azure. I chose to use seven gems, for the simple reason that seven is not six – I do not want this mistaken for a Baronial coronet. Historical Basis: Some of the earliest forms of headgear worn to denote royalty or nobility are the diadems worn by the ancient Greeksi. These are still preserved in museums, and illustrated on many coins of the era. For example, this coin, of Antiochus III of the Selucid Empire (ca. 223 BC – 187 BC), shows him wearing a diadem, and bears the inscription in Greek ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ, of King Antiochusii: While these diadems started as simple ribbons or wreaths, worn upon the head for ceremonial or religious reasonsiii, by the 4th century, it was fairly common for rulers in the Greek world to wear a golden wreath on their head as a symbol of nobility or even divinity – because many depictions of the Greek pantheon showed the gods wearing wreaths: Heracles with wreath of white poplar leavesiv: There is also the story of Apollo and the nymph Daphne, from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, in which she is pursued by Apollo and turns herself into a laurel tree. -

The fact that many scholars, on both sides of the Atlantic, have recently felt the need to address this question is usually interpreted as a symptom of a “crisis” in the literary profession. Less students, less jobs, less attractiveness, less impact, less prestige: the study of literature seems bound to follow the path taken by the study of theology during the 19th century. Against this background feeling of gloom and doom, the steady flow of manifestoes in favor of literary studies often sounds overblown by wishful thinking. Literary interpretations, as performed in the classroom, are supposed to ground, shape and expand our moral consciousness, set the foundations for an alternative to the suicidal logics of global capitalism, and/or provide an affordable gymnastics training us to become successful among the young sharks of the creative class… Such contradictory and overambitious goals have provided an understandable backlash among more realistic, cautious or cynical colleagues. Phil Watts never indulged in theoretical or programmatic gesturing. As a teacher, as a scholar, as a member of faculty committees, as a departmental chair, he was well aware of the challenges faced by our profession. As a reader and as a thinker, he eagerly followed the debates about the constant reconfiguration of our discipline—and his interest in Jacques Rancière and Roland Barthes bears witness to his profound engagement with literary theory, in its connection with intellectual history and political philosophy. -

Reproduced by permission of the University Library, Prague. 15 QUESTIONS IN A QUANDARY Monsignore Paleotto tells us: Many who have seen the crown in France report that it forms a sort of helmet. But where in France, during the XVIth century, was such a crown to be seen? The Crown of Thorns, which King Saint Louis redeemed from the Venetians in 1239, for which the Sainte- Chapelle was erected, and which is still conserved in the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, is a mere bandeau of rushes, innocent of thorns. Hardly a "crown", for with a diameter of 21 cm (8¼ inches), it would slip over a man's head to rest on his shoulders. Yet Louis IX was satisfied that the relic was authentic. As Paleotto observed by direct examination of the Holy Shroud, puncture wounds appear in every part of the Lord's head; wounds and bloodflows typical of thorn punctures. Only a mass of thorn branches affixed to the head could have caused these injuries. What became of this cruel bonnet, tinged with the blood of Christ? Weaving our way through many writings, we find a few that might possibly be significant: IVth century — "There was a colony of judeo-christians living on Mount Sion until the byzantine-christians took over in the IVth century. -

According to historical sources, Gilgamesh was the fifth king of the city of Uruk. He ruled about 2750 B.C.E.—for a period of 126 years, according to one semilegendary source—and he led his community in its conflicts with Kish, a nearby city that was the principal rival of Uruk. Historical sources record little additional detail about Gilgamesh's life and deeds. But Gilgamesh was a figure of Mesopotamian mythology and folklore as well as history. He was the subject of numerous poems and legends, and Mesopotamian bards made him the central figure in a cycle of stories known collectively as theEpic of Gilgamesh. As a figure of legend, Gilgamesh became the greatest hero figure of ancient Mesopotamia. According to the stories, the gods granted Gilgamesh a perfect body and endowed him with superhuman strength and courage. -

Uruk (now Warka, Iraq), 3500-3000 BCE. Sun-dried and fired mudbrick. SUMERIAN The temple is named after its whitewashed walls and it stands atop a ziggurat, a high platform. Sumerian builders did not have access to stone quarries and instead formed mud bricks for the superstructures of their temples and other buildings. Almost all these structures have eroded over the course of time. The fragile nature of the building materials did not, however, prevent the Sumerians from erecting towering works, such as the Uruk temple, several centuries before the Egyptians built their stone pyramids. Enough of the Uruk complex remains to permit a fairly reliable reconstruction drawing. The temple (most likely dedicated to the sky god Anu) stands on top of a high platform, or ziggurat, 40 feet above street level in the city center. -
