Manchus: A Horse of a Different Color by Hannah Knight Abstract: The question of identity has been one of the biggest questions addressed to humanity. Whether in terms of a country, a group or an individual, the exact definition is almost as difficult to answer as to what constitutes a group. The Manchus, an ethnic group in China, also faced this dilemma. It was an issue that lasted throughout their entire time as rulers of the Qing Dynasty (1644- 1911) and thereafter. Though the guidelines and group characteristics changed throughout that period one aspect remained clear: they did not sinicize with the Chinese Culture. At the beginning of their rule, the Manchus implemented changes that would transform the appearance of China, bringing it closer to the identity that the world recognizes today. In the course of examining three time periods, 1644, 1911, and the 1930’s, this paper looks at the significant events of the period, the changing aspects, and the Manchus and the Qing Imperial Court’s relations with their greater Han Chinese subjects. -

Getting to the Root of Hair Loss
26 March 2012 | MP3 at voaspecialenglish.com Getting to the Root of Hair Loss Reuters An example of male pattern baldness SHIRLEY GRIFFITH: This is SCIENCE IN THE NEWS in VOA Special English. I'm Shirley Griffith. JUNE SIMMS: And I'm June Simms. Today we talk about hair. We will tell what hair is, how it grows, and some of the main reasons people lose it. (MUSIC) SHIRLEY GRIFFITH: Hair has always been an important sign of beauty. This is especially true for women. Next to the face, hair is one of the main qualities people look for when they consider a woman's beauty. Whether long or short, curly or straight, hair often gets a lot of attention. People who have it value it. Those of us who do not often mourn its loss. JUNE SIMMS: Each hair on a person's head grows from a single tube-like hole in the skin called a follicle. People are born with all of the hair follicles they are ever going to have. The average person has about one hundred thousand hair follicles. They begin to form on a fetus around the third month of pregnancy. 2 The part of the hair under the skin is known as the hair root. The hair sticking out from the skin is known as the hair shaft. The shaft is made up of dead cells that have been pushed up through the root. At the base of the hair root is a small ball-like formation called a bulb. This is where new cells are formed. -
Is There Dignity in Being Bald
Ain’t No Such Thing as a Bald Headed Rock Star One of my many fantasies in life was to be a rock star (as recounted in Chapter 4). And, as you know, the key reason I had no hope whatsoever of being a rock star is a breathtaking lack of any discernable talent for the guitar…or for singing. The only thing I had going for me was a full head of black hair, and as one long forgotten girlfriend told me when I was a junior in high school, a faint and distant resemblance to Ricky Nelson. Even that started to go wrong during my freshman year in college. I began to find a few black hairs in the tub after washing my hair. I wondered if… Certainly not me! Couldn’t be! I had a widow’s peak, just like Ricky and Elvis…. I was destined to be a rock star or a network newsman. Hair was a prerequisite. I simply couldn’t be losing my hair. My grandfather (on my mother’s side) was bald. As were all my uncles on mom’s side of the family. Cue ball bald. With just that little horseshoe fringe around the sides. I’d read somewhere, probably in Reader’s Digest, that baldness is hereditary. If your relatives on your mother’s side of the family are bald, chances are fabulous that you will, indeed, be just as bald as they are. The good news, you’ll save money on haircuts. One summer evening, after a long day at my summer job at the paper mill, I’d taken a shower, washed my hair, and was watching TV. -

Literary Attention: the Hairy Politics of Details », Romanic Review, Vol
« Literary Attention: The Hairy Politics of Details », Romanic Review, vol. 105, nbr. 1-2, May-Nov 2013, p. 111-121 Yves Citton Literary Attention: The Hairy Politics of Details What can literary studies bring to our experience? The fact that many scholars, on both sides of the Atlantic, have recently felt the need to address this question is usually interpreted as a symptom of a “crisis” in the literary profession. Less students, less jobs, less attractiveness, less impact, less prestige: the study of literature seems bound to follow the path taken by the study of theology during the 19th century. Against this background feeling of gloom and doom, the steady flow of manifestoes in favor of literary studies often sounds overblown by wishful thinking. Literary interpretations, as performed in the classroom, are supposed to ground, shape and expand our moral consciousness, set the foundations for an alternative to the suicidal logics of global capitalism, and/or provide an affordable gymnastics training us to become successful among the young sharks of the creative class… Such contradictory and overambitious goals have provided an understandable backlash among more realistic, cautious or cynical colleagues. Phil Watts never indulged in theoretical or programmatic gesturing. As a teacher, as a scholar, as a member of faculty committees, as a departmental chair, he was well aware of the challenges faced by our profession. As a reader and as a thinker, he eagerly followed the debates about the constant reconfiguration of our discipline—and his interest in Jacques Rancière and Roland Barthes bears witness to his profound engagement with literary theory, in its connection with intellectual history and political philosophy.
