Ab seiner Er- öffnung am 9. Dezember 2007 befuhren ihn bis Ende 2015 bereits über eine Viertelmillion Züge. Sei es als Pendler vom Wallis in Richtung Bern, als Ferien- gast auf dem Weg von der Deutschschweiz in die Walliser Berge oder als Geschäftsreisender auf dem Weg nach Nord- italien: Der Tunnel verkürzt die Reise. Auch Güter, meist in Containern, nehmen rund um die Uhr das Teilstück Lötschberg des internationalen Kor- ridors Rotterdam – Genua unter die Räder. Zusammen mit der Bergstrecke via Kandersteg und Goppenstein bildet der Basistunnel ein Gesamtsystem im Alpentransit. Das Meisterwerk der Technik und des Ingenieurbaus wird heute von rund 50 Personen- und bis zu 60 Güterzügen täglich befahren. Damit ist die Kapazität des Tunnels im Schnitt zu über 80 % belegt, an manchen Tagen beträgt die Auslastung 100 % und die Züge können nur durch ein geschicktes Verkehrsmanagement in dieser Anzahl durchgeschleust werden. 4 Editorial Der 21 Kilometer lange einspurige Abschnitt schränkt die notwendige Aufnahme des erwarteten Verkehrswachs- tums massiv ein.
