The influence of Japanese art is a phenomenon that is now called Japonisme , and it spread widely throughout Western art. It is quite hard to make a clear definition of Japonisme because of the breadth of the phenomenon, but it could be generally agreed that it is an attempt to understand and adapt the essential qualities of Japanese art. This thesis explores Japanese influences on British Art and will focus on four artists working in Britain: the American James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), the Australian Mortimer Menpes (1855-1938), and two artists from the group known as the Glasgow Boys, George Henry (1858-1934) and Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864-1933). -
Social Decorating: Dutch Salons in Early Modern Japan
SOCIAL DECORATING: DUTCH SALONS IN EARLY MODERN JAPAN TERRENCE JACKSON Adrian College Seated Intellect, Performative Intellect Cultural salons proliferated during the last half of the eighteenth century in Japan, accommodating a growing interest in the za arts and literature (za-bungei 座文芸). The literal meaning of za 座 was “seat,” and the za arts (visual and literary) were performed within groups, which were presumably “seated” together. Za culture first appeared as early as the thirteenth century when the Emperor Go-Toba 後鳥羽 held poetry gatherings in his salon (zashiki 座敷). In practice, za also referred to the physical space where these individuals gathered, and it is from that that the related term zashiki, or “sitting room” was derived.1 Zashiki served a function similar to the salons of Europe in the early modern period—as a semi-private space to entertain guests and enjoy cultural interaction. Za arts gatherings met within the homes of participants or patrons, but also in rented zashiki at temples and teahouses. During their meetings, professionals and amateurs interacted and cooperated to produce culture. The epitome of this was renga 連歌 poetry in which groups created linked-verses. However, other types of cultural groups met in salons to design such items as woodblock prints and playful calendars, to debate flower arranging, or to discuss the latest bestsellers. Within these spaces, the emphasis was on group production and on the rights of all attendees to participate, regardless of social background. The atmosphere of zashiki gatherings combined civility, curiosity, playfulness, and camaraderie. The distinction between artistic and intellectual pursuits had fuzzy boundaries during the Tokugawa period, and scholars largely operated within a social world similar to artists, poets, and fiction writers . -

Demonology and Eroticism Islands of Women in the Japanese Buddhist Imagination

Max Moerman Demonology and Eroticism Islands of Women in the Japanese Buddhist Imagination The demonic female, an object of male anxiety and desire, has long been a stock character in Japanese Buddhist literature. This article examines two female realms in the Japanese literary and visual imagination: Rasetsukoku, a dreaded island of female cannibals, and Nyōgogashima, a fabled isle of erotic fantasy. I trace the persistence and transformation of these sites in tale litera- ture, sutra illustration, popular fiction, and Japanese cartography from the twelfth through the nineteenth century to show how the construction of Japa- nese identity relies on the mapping of the marginal. In doing so, I argue for the centrality of Buddhism to Japan’s cartographic tradition and the importance of cartography in Japanese Buddhist literary and visual culture. keywords: Rasetsukoku—Nyōgogashima—Japanese cartography—Buddhist narrative—visual culture D. From the formation of Tokugawa law in 1603 until Matsudaira Sadanobu’s Kansei reforms at the close of the eighteenth century, lawmakers and their critics relied on cosmological and anthropological narratives to explain and justify their attempts to make Tokugawa law and, particularly in moments of crisis, reframe it. While the use of religious narratives occurred consistently over a two-hundred-year period, legal arguments based on cosmology were not a pervasive feature of Tokugawa law. Instead, lawmakers generally used these narratives in a specific context— to support or corrode the authority of the constitutional laws that framed the Tokugawa legal order. Evaluating Tokugawa legal cosmology offers new perspective on a conundrum found in Tokugawa law; the cosmological narratives that appear in Tokugawa law varied widely over the course of the Tokugawa period, even as the substantive laws that they supported remained remarkably consistent. -

The figure of the translator during what I call ‘the moment of the translator’ from roughly the 1850s through the 1870s served a key purpose: he embodied a model of modern Japanese identity that could successfully move through international contexts, on Western terms, by means of his fluency in foreign languages. In chapter 1 I examine the multitude of historical figures who acted as translators in the late nineteenth century to argue that the cumulative force of their public stories created 'the moment of the translator.' In chapter 2 I consider one of the most popular fictional travel narratives to feature a translator figure: Kanagaki Robun's Seiyôdôchû hizakurige.
