Okanogan County was created in 1888 from Stevens County, and is an Indian word for "rendezvous. It is situated in the north central part of the state west of the Cascaded and bounded on the north by Canada. The first American post in the state was Fort Okanogan established in 1811 by Astor's Pacific Fur Company. In 1859 the county experienced a gold rush when placer gold was discovered on the Similkameen River. Steamboats reached the town of Okanogan two months of the year in the 1880s, but it was not until 1915 that the county had regular transportation service when the Great Northern Railroad ran a branch line from Wenatchee to Okanogan. Today, mining is an important part of the county's economy along with timber products and agriculture. Bounded by: British Columbia, Canada (N), Ferry County (E), Lincoln, Grant and Douglas counties (S), and Chelan, Skagit, and Whatcom counties (W). Low-relief rocky meadows and modest forested ridges marked by scattered cinder cones and shields are common landforms in Simcoe Mountains volcanic field. Mount Adams (elevation: 12,276 ft; 3,742 m) is centered 50 km west and 2.8 km higher than foreground meadow (elevation: 2,950 ft.; 900 m); its eruptions began ~520 ka, its upper cone was built in late Pleistocene, and several eruptions have taken place in the Holocene. Opinion by Judge Friedland SUMMARY** Tribal Reservation Affirming the district court’s judgment entered following a bench trial, the panel held that under an 1855 treaty between the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation and the United States, the Yakama Reservation includes a tract, known as Tract D, that partially overlaps with Klickitat County, Washington. The parties’ dispute arose when the County attempted to prosecute P.T.S., a minor and enrolled member of the Tribe, for acts that occurred within Tract D. Pursuant to a proclamation issued by the Governor of Washington, the Yakamas and the federal government share exclusive jurisdiction over certain criminal and civil offenses that occur on Reservation lands. Sinclair Center for Columbia River History Funded by The National Park Service, Department of the Interior Final Copy, February 2004 This document is the first in a research partnership between the Center for Columbia River History (CCRH) and the National Park Service (NPS) at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. The Park Service contracts with CCRH to encourage and support professional historical research, study, lectures and development in higher education programs related to the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site and the Vancouver National Historic Reserve (VNHR). CCRH is a consortium of the Washington State Historical Society, Portland State University, and Washington State University Vancouver. The mission of the Center for Columbia River History is to promote study of the history of the Columbia River Basin. Introduction For more than 150 years, Vancouver Barracks has been a site of strategic importance in the Pacific Northwest. Established in 1849, the post became a supply base for troops, goods, and services to the interior northwest and the western coast. Throughout the latter half of the nineteenth century soldiers from Vancouver were deployed to explore the northwest, build regional transportation and communication systems, respond to Indian-settler conflicts, and control civil and labor unrest. A thriving community developed nearby, deeply connected economically and socially with the military base. From its inception through WWII, Vancouver was a distinctly military place, an integral part of the city’s character. -

NOTES ON EARLY SETTLEMENTS AND ON GEOGRAPHIC NAMES OF EASTERN WASHINGTON Introduction The article which follows is a by-product of several mmor studies in the economic history of eastern Washington. Although not intended as such, it turns out to be, in some respects, an appen dix, or perhaps a series of footnotes, to Professor Meany's Origin . of Washington Geographic Names, a study published serially in this magazine and subsequently brought out as a volume by the Uni versity of Washington Press in 1923. The article contains some names not included in Professor Meany's study, elaborations of a few of his entries, and, in rare instances, slight corrections of his work. To facilitate comparison, frequent references are made to the above-mentioned volume. But the present article is conceived in a different spirit from that of Professor Meany's study. His interest centered in the origins of names; mine has consisted primarily in assembling data relating to early settlements in one area of Washington. Other entries in my article are incidental. By means of the data herein assembled the story of the occupation of the area north of the Snake River in eastern Washington during the seventies and the eighties can be traced in outline, and the principal factors which determined the sites of pioneer towns can be seen in operation. Not the least important of these factors was transportation. During the decade of the seventies the pioneers of eastern Washington were in large measure economically dependent on the Columbia River system. Down the Snake and Columbia rivers was shipped the produce of the "upper country," and up these rivers were transported immi grants and equipment needed for the economic development of the Palouse and Spokane countries.* And to some extent settlers south of the Snake River were dependent on the navigation of that stream.
