INTRODUCTION Read aloud the . Read it again, this time inviting children to say it with you . Talk about what happens in the rhyme . To jumpstart scientific thinking, make a Humpty Dumpty by using a permanent marker to draw a face on a raw . Place a plastic tub on the floor under the edge of a table . Then try to balance the Humpty egg on the edge of the table “wall ”. Have children share their observations .

Continue with questions, such as: Why did Humpty fall off the wall? Could Humpty have fallen up? Why not? How could the wall have been built to keep Humpty from falling? What could have been done to prevent Humpty from breaking?

ACTIVITY 1 Protecting Humpty Challenge: Come up with a way to protect a “Humpty” egg so it doesn’t break when dropped . Challenge children to come up with a way to keep a hard-boiled Humpty egg from breaking when it falls . Invite children to draw their idea and list the materials they need on their planning sheet . Then have them do the activity . Afterwards, have them mark on their sheet whether or not their idea worked . Discuss which ideas worked, which didn’t, and why .

Invite children to draw their idea and list the materials they need on their planning sheet . Then have them do the activity . Afterwards, have them mark on their sheet whether or not their idea worked . Discuss which ideas worked, which didn’t, and why .
