Author to donate proceeds from film adaptation to Alzeheimer’s research ADVOCATE STAFF REPORT Feb. 16, 2016; 0:30 p.m. An LSU Health Sciences Center doctor who wrote a novel about a New Orleans street musician suffering from memory loss and a neuroscientist intent on helping her is donating 70 percent of the money he makes from a movie based on the book to Alzheimer’s research. “I am rewarded because my efforts to bring to the community the magnitude of the problem of Alzheimer’s and dementia will reach a wider audience,” said Dr. Nicolas Bazan, professor and director of the Neuroscience Center of Excellence at LSU Health New Orleans. As part of a national art house theater tour, the movie “Of Mind and Music” has a special run through Thursday, at the Zeitgeist Multi-Disciplinary Arts Center, 1618 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd. It will screen at 6 p.m. The film has won more than 12 awards on the festival circuit, including five audience awards, three best actress awards for Aunjanue Ellis, two jury awards for best director and several jury awards for best feature film. “Of Mind and Music” stars Ellis (“Quantico,” “The Book of Negroes,” “Men of Honor,” “The Help,” “Ray”), Joaquim de Almeida (“Our Brand Is Crisis,” “Desperado,” “Fast Five,” “Clear and Present Danger”), Bill Cobbs (“Night at the Museum,” “Oz the Great and Powerful,” “The Bodyguard”), Sharon Lawrence (“NYPD Blue,” “Grey’s Anatomy”) and Ruth Negga (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “World War Z,” “The Samaritan”). Like 2009, 2010 presented difficult challenges to the state’s economic development community, but there were also many success stories and examples of outstanding collaboration in all corners of the state. Established businesses such as Caterpillar, Siemens and IBM continued their commitment to North Carolina by expanding in the state. New partners such as Facebook helped cement North Carolina's reputation as a leader in the data center industry. This year also saw the launch of ThriveNC.com, a new website dedicated to meet the needs of business decision-makers and site selection consultants, as well as an expanded marketing program for in-state partners. Topping it off, Site Selection magazine once again named the state as the nation's best business climate. With continued leadership from Governor Bev Perdue and N.C. Department of Commerce Secretary Keith Crisco, along with the collaborative efforts of every member of the state's economic development community, the outlook for 2011 looks bright. In the coming year, SYNC will continue to bring you the news and information that builds collaborative relationships and helps us all stay in SYNC. Welcome to Georgetown Presbyterian Order of Worship Georgetown Presbyterian Church April 1, 2012 Holy Week Begins 10:00 am Service Palm Sunday celebrates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Yet even as the people cheered “Hosanna” the stage was quickly being set for the events that would change the world forever. By week’s end, Jesus will be betrayed, arrested, convicted in an illegal trial and crucified at a place that has come to be known as “Calvary” - a Latin translation of the Biblical name “Golgotha.” Our service today remembers that week from the joy of the entry, to the agony of the crucifixion, to the hope of something more to come. The Choral Cantata this morning lifts up our Lenten theme “The Shadow of the Cross. At the end of the service, you are invited to leave the sanctuary in silence but not in despair - for indeed there is more to come - God will not leave us at the cross and the shadows will give way to the coming dawn. CASA volunteers add the color... VOICES FOR CHILDREN ANNUAL REPORT 2011–2012 ... that brings a foster child’s case to life. ¤ February 2013 DEAR FRIENDS, On behalf of all of us at Voices for Children, thank you. Whether you are a donor, a volunteer, or a caring citizen concerned about the plight of foster children, we are very grateful for your generosity of time, funds, and spirit. Your support enables us to advocate on behalf of the thousands of abused and neglected children living in San Diego County foster care. It is through the dedication and commitment of our Court Appointed Special Advocates —our CASA volunteers—that we are transforming the lives of innocent children caught in the complex bureaucracy of the foster care system. These children have suffered horrific trauma by those who were supposed to care for them and love them the most, and the impact of such betrayal lasts a lifetime, shadowing them well into adulthood. It erodes their physical health and mental well-being and can devastate self-confidence, resilience, trust, and hope. CASAs from Voices for Children provide that hope. They speak up for their case children’s needs in San Diego County’s Juvenile Dependency Court, providing context, detail, and history so that judges can make the best possible rulings to ensure the well-being of each boy and girl. As one judge put it, “I sometimes think of a child’s coloring book when I consider the work of CASAs. The case files I receive are full of generalized reports from social workers and lawyers—they provide an outline of a child.
