Welcome to Georgetown Presbyterian Order of Worship Georgetown Presbyterian Church April 1, 2012 Holy Week Begins 10:00 am Service

Palm Sunday celebrates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Yet even as the people cheered “Hosanna” the stage was quickly being set for the events that would change the world forever. By week’s end, Jesus will be betrayed, arrested, convicted in an illegal trial and crucified at a place that has come to be known as “Calvary” - a Latin translation of the Biblical name “Golgotha.” Our service today remembers that week from the joy of the entry, to the agony of the crucifixion, to the hope of something more to come. The Choral Cantata this morning lifts up our Lenten theme “The Shadow of the Cross. At the end of the service, you are invited to leave the sanctuary in silence but not in despair - for indeed there is more to come - God will not leave us at the cross and the shadows will give way to the coming dawn.

In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever, Till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river. Minute for Mission One Great Hour of Sharing Deacon Melissa Barron Near the cross! O Lamb of God, bring its scenes before me; O Love That Will Not Let Me Go Help me walk from day to day with its shadows o’ me. O Love, that will not let me go, I rest my weary soul in thee; In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever, I give thee back the life I owe, Till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river. That in thine ocean depths its flow may richer, fuller be. Jesus, I come, O Light that followest all my way, I yield my flickering torch to thee; Jesus, I come, My heart restores its borrowed ray, Jesus, I come to the cross. That in thy sunshine’s blaze its day may brighter, fairer be.

We Remember You Lamb of God We remember you, we remember you; Your only Son, no sin to hide, By your sacrifice of love all glory now is due. But you have sent him from your side to walk upon this guilty sod, At this table here mercy hovers near. And to become the Lamb of God. Thanks is offered up; in this bread and cup we remember you. Your gift of love they crucified, Jesus, King of kings, name above all names, They laughed and scorned him as he died, the humble King they named a fraud, Precious holy Lamb of God, your praises we proclaim! And sacrificed the Lamb of God. Gladly we embrace both these signs of grace, O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God, Thanks is offered up; in this bread and cup we remember you. I love the holy Lamb of God. O wash me in his precious blood. We remember you, we remember you; My Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God By your sacrifice of love all glory now is due. At this table here mercy hovers near. I was so lost I should have died, Thanks is offered up; in this bread and cup we remember you. But you have brought me to your side to be led by your staff and rod, And to be called a lamb of God. O Jesus, I Have Promised / I Need Thee Every Hour You Are My All in All O Jesus, I have promised to serve you till the end; Be forever near me, my Master and my Friend. You are my strength when I am weak; you are the treasure that I seek; I shall not fear the battle if you are by my side, You are my all in all. Nor wander from the pathway if you will be my guide. Seeking you as a precious jewel. Lord, to give up, I’d be a fool; You are my all in all. O let me feel you near me, the world is ever near. I see the sights that dazzle, the tempting sounds I hear. Jesus, Lamb of God, worthy is your name! My foes are ever near me, around me and within, Taking my sin, my cross, my shame, rising again I bless you name, But, Jesus, now draw nearer, and shield my soul from sin. You are my all in all. I need thee every hour, stay thou near by; When I fall down you pick me up; when I am dry, you fill my cup; Temptations lose their pow’r when thou are nigh. You are my all in all. I need thee, O I need thee, every hour I need thee; Jesus, Lamb of God, worthy is your name! O bless me now, my Savior, I come to thee. Jesus, Lamb of God, worthy is your name! (Choir only) Jesus, Lamb of God, worthy is your name! When You Prayed Beneath the Trees Beneath the Cross of Jesus / When I Survey the Wondrous Cross When you prayed beneath the trees, it was for me, O Lord; Beneath the cross of Jesus, I fain would take my stand; When you cried upon your knees, how could it be, O Lord? The shadow of a might Rock within a weary land, When in blood and sweat and tears, you dismissed your final fears, A home within the wilderness, a rest upon the way, When you faced the soldiers’ spears, you stood for me, O Lord. From the burning of the noontide heat, and the burden of the day. When their triumph looked complete, it was for me, O Lord; I take, O cross, they shadow for my abiding place; When it seemed like your defeat, they could not see, O Lord! I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of his face, When you faced the mob alone, you were silent as a stone, Content to let the world go by, to know no gain nor loss, And a tree became your throne; you came for me, O Lord. My sinful self my only shame, my glory all the cross. When you stumbled up the road, you walked for me, O Lord; When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died, When you took your deadly load, that heavy tree, O Lord; My richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride. When they lifted you on high, and they nailed you up to die, See, from his head, his hands, his feet, And when darkness filled the sky, it was for me, for me, O Lord. Sorrow and love flow mingled down. Did e’er such love and sorrow meat, or thorns compose so rich a crown? How Beautiful Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small; How beautiful the hands that served the wine and the bread Love so amazing so divine, And the children of the earth. Demands my soul, How beautiful the feet that walked the long dusty roads My life, And the hill to the cross. My all. How beautiful, how beautiful, how beautiful, is the body of Christ. How beautiful the heart that bled, that took all my sin and bore it instead. As the lights are extinguished, we will sit in silence for a few moments reflecting upon the How beautiful the tender eyes that chose to forgive and never despise. coming week.
