Rough girl Perdita and her demonic lover Romeo Dolorosa need humans to sacrifice following Romeo's religion before he can go on a mission ordered by mob boss Santos. They kidnap teen sweethearts Duane and Estelle and travel with them to Las-Vegas. Written by Anonymous. I saw six movies in three days at my first Toronto Film Festival -- this one last, after a slow-moving Japanese film, "Afterlife" which I also enjoyed, and the pace of which set up this film wonderfully. I saw this uncut and on the big screen, and it shot right through my veins like an amphetamine from a slingshot. Javier Bardem is one of those rare actors who is so good, who disappears so far into his roles, that a lot of people still don't know him. Pity -- he's the pivot of this film, the steady-burning sun around which equally dazzling Rosie Perez throbs in her mad ecliptic orbit. The acting is, in fact -- in spite of what you're reading elsewhere here -- perfectly pitched in all quarters. I managed to get an uncut video copy online a few years back from ebay, and it IS true, the movie loses a bit in the Dance with the Devil from big-screen to small, but trust me, it's still a wild ride. I left the theater feeling like I'd been set on fire with gasoline and Dance with the Devil. Looking for some great streaming picks? • Report to the Friends of Music
Summer, 2020 Dear Friends of the Music Department, The 2019-20 academic year has been like no other. After a vibrant fall semester featur- ing two concerts by the Parker Quartet, the opening of the innovative Harvard ArtLab featuring performances by our faculty and students, an exciting array of courses and our inaugural department-wide throwdown–an informal sharing of performance projects by students and faculty–we began the second semester with great optimism. Meredith Monk arrived for her Fromm Professorship, Pedro Memelsdorff came to work with the Univer- sity Choir as the Christoph Wolff Scholar, Esperanza Spalding and Carolyn Abbate began co-teaching an opera development workshop about Wayne Shorter’s Iphigenia, and Vijay Iyer planned a spectacular set of Fromm Players concerts and a symposium called Black Speculative Musicalities. And then the world changed. Harvard announced on March 10, 2020 that due to COVID-19, virtual teaching would begin after spring break and the undergraduates were being sent home. We had to can- cel all subsequent spring events and radically revise our teaching by learning to conduct classes over Zoom. Our faculty, staff, and students pulled together admirably to address the changed landscape. The opera workshop (Music 187r) continued virtually; students in Vijay Iyer’s Advanced Ensemble Workshop (Music 171) created an album of original mu- sic, “Mixtape,” that is available on Bandcamp; Meredith Monk created a video of students in her choral class performing her work in progress, Fields/Clouds, and Andy Clark created an incredible performance of the Harvard Choruses for virtual graduation that involved a complicated process of additive recording over Zoom.

  • 2010 in Review from Commerce
Dec. 28, 2010 Invite a Friend [email protected] 2010 in review from Commerce Happy Holidays from all of us at the North Carolina Department of Commerce! As 2010 draws to a close, this week’s SYNC takes a look back at the year's top economic development accomplishments from across North Carolina. Like 2009, 2010 presented difficult challenges to the state’s economic development community, but there were also many success stories and examples of outstanding collaboration in all corners of the state. Established businesses such as Caterpillar, Siemens and IBM continued their commitment to North Carolina by expanding in the state. New partners such as Facebook helped cement North Carolina's reputation as a leader in the data center industry. This year also saw the launch of ThriveNC.com, a new website dedicated to meet the needs of business decision-makers and site selection consultants, as well as an expanded marketing program for in-state partners. Topping it off, Site Selection magazine once again named the state as the nation's best business climate. With continued leadership from Governor Bev Perdue and N.C. Department of Commerce Secretary Keith Crisco, along with the collaborative efforts of every member of the state's economic development community, the outlook for 2011 looks bright. In the coming year, SYNC will continue to bring you the news and information that builds collaborative relationships and helps us all stay in SYNC. Perdue announces small business initiatives Governor Bev Perdue on Jan. 13 announced her major policy priorities for the coming year – jobs and the economy, education, setting government straight, and keeping communities safe.

Brunswick seniors celebrate a golden age By JENNIFER AMATO Staff Writer n a building that is just 25 years old, there are enough memories to last 25 Ilifetimes. The South Brunswick Senior Center will highlight its 25th anniversary on Sept. 22 with a celebratory party. Betsy Sansig, 92, remembers when a celebration was held to mark the first offi cial day of the opening of the center in 1991. “The mayor was here. And a lot of big shots,” she said of the ribbon-cutting and luncheon to follow. Prior to the establishment of the senior center, a group of seniors would meet in the early 1980s at the municipal building to pe tition for a space of their own while using Crossroads Middle School, the VFW, the high school and Woodlol Park as meeting grounds. “We used to join trips. We used to go away sometimes for a week ... and book a hotel,” Sansig said. Then, with permission of the mayor and council at the time, a 10,000-square-foot structure was built for a population of 2,000 residents who were age 55 or older, with about 50 seniors coming to the center each day. A group would go door-to-door selling stickers to residents — Sansig did not re member what the stickers looked like — in order to buy $3,000 worth of kitchenware and dishware for the new center.

GIBBS AND HIS TEAM INVESTIGATE THE DEATH OF A MARINE WHO CAPTURED HIS OWN DEATH ON TAPE “Caught on Tape” - #038 - The NCIS team is called to investigate when a Marine records his own murder on video as he falls off a cliff, on NCIS, Tuesday, February 22, 2005 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Jeff Woolnough directed the episode from a script by Chris Crowe and John C. Kelley & Gil Grant. Gibbs and the team receive a call that a Marine has been found dead at the bottom of a cliff. When the team shows up to investigate the supposed hiking accident, they learn that he was on a camping trip with his wife and best friend (who they come to find out are having an affair). As Tony and McGee search through the forest for clues, McGee finds the murder weapon that proves the Marine’s death was not caused by his fall. Unfortunately, he finds this evidence in a patch of poison ivy. Gibbs pits the two lovers against each other in separate interrogation rooms to find out whose story is not adding up. Meanwhile Abby uses her superb technical skills to examine the video tape that reveals the Marine unknowingly recorded his own death post-mortem. CAST Leroy Jethro Gibbs.............................. Welcome to Georgetown Presbyterian Order of Worship Georgetown Presbyterian Church April 1, 2012 Holy Week Begins 10:00 am Service Palm Sunday celebrates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Yet even as the people cheered “Hosanna” the stage was quickly being set for the events that would change the world forever. By week’s end, Jesus will be betrayed, arrested, convicted in an illegal trial and crucified at a place that has come to be known as “Calvary” - a Latin translation of the Biblical name “Golgotha.” Our service today remembers that week from the joy of the entry, to the agony of the crucifixion, to the hope of something more to come. The Choral Cantata this morning lifts up our Lenten theme “The Shadow of the Cross. At the end of the service, you are invited to leave the sanctuary in silence but not in despair - for indeed there is more to come - God will not leave us at the cross and the shadows will give way to the coming dawn. • CASA Volunteers Add the Color
CASA volunteers add the color... VOICES FOR CHILDREN ANNUAL REPORT 2011–2012 ... that brings a foster child’s case to life. ¤ February 2013 DEAR FRIENDS, On behalf of all of us at Voices for Children, thank you. Whether you are a donor, a volunteer, or a caring citizen concerned about the plight of foster children, we are very grateful for your generosity of time, funds, and spirit. Your support enables us to advocate on behalf of the thousands of abused and neglected children living in San Diego County foster care. It is through the dedication and commitment of our Court Appointed Special Advocates —our CASA volunteers—that we are transforming the lives of innocent children caught in the complex bureaucracy of the foster care system. These children have suffered horrific trauma by those who were supposed to care for them and love them the most, and the impact of such betrayal lasts a lifetime, shadowing them well into adulthood. It erodes their physical health and mental well-being and can devastate self-confidence, resilience, trust, and hope. CASAs from Voices for Children provide that hope. They speak up for their case children’s needs in San Diego County’s Juvenile Dependency Court, providing context, detail, and history so that judges can make the best possible rulings to ensure the well-being of each boy and girl. As one judge put it, “I sometimes think of a child’s coloring book when I consider the work of CASAs. The case files I receive are full of generalized reports from social workers and lawyers—they provide an outline of a child.

BEST DIRECTOR AWARD SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL 2012 PRESS CONTACT: Tilane Jones | AFFRM | 818.995.0050 | [email protected] PRESS QUOTES NEW YORK TIMES January 27, 2012 | "Amazing Child, Typical Grown-Ups" by Manohla Dargis "Further under the radar though far more successful is "Middle of Nowhere," a heartfelt, slow to build, slow to burn drama from Ava DuVernay about a young married woman, Ruby (Emayatzy Corinealdi), keeping body and soul together while her husband, Derek (Omari Hardwick), serves out his sentence in a California prison. Working with the terrific cinematographer Bradford Young, Ms. DuVernay fills her movie with long shots and meticulously framed images of casual beauty that reflect the quietly evolving inner life of her heroine." LOS ANGELES TIMES January 30, 2012 | "Sundance Film Festival: From 'Beasts' to 'Ice,' wonder wins out" by Kenny Turan "…At the other end of the spectrum is "Middle of Nowhere," winner of the U.S. drama directing prize for Ava DuVernay. This is classic filmmaking of a completely different sort…" THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER January 20, 2012 | Review by John DeFore "Strong performances and a restrained script sell drama about a couple separated by prison walls. Solidly crafted by budding writer-director Ava DuVernay, it should find a warm reception at fests and in a niche theatrical run."
