    Author to donate proceeds from film adaptation to Alzeheimer’s research ADVOCATE STAFF REPORT Feb. 16, 2016; 0:30 p.m. An LSU Health Sciences Center doctor who wrote a novel about a New Orleans street musician suffering from memory loss and a neuroscientist intent on helping her is donating 70 percent of the money he makes from a movie based on the book to Alzheimer’s research. “I am rewarded because my efforts to bring to the community the magnitude of the problem of Alzheimer’s and dementia will reach a wider audience,” said Dr. Nicolas Bazan, professor and director of the Neuroscience Center of Excellence at LSU Health New Orleans. As 2010 draws to a close, this week’s SYNC takes a look back at the year's top economic development accomplishments from across North Carolina. Like 2009, 2010 presented difficult challenges to the state’s economic development community, but there were also many success stories and examples of outstanding collaboration in all corners of the state. Established businesses such as Caterpillar, Siemens and IBM continued their commitment to North Carolina by expanding in the state. New partners such as Facebook helped cement North Carolina's reputation as a leader in the data center industry. This year also saw the launch of ThriveNC.com, a new website dedicated to meet the needs of business decision-makers and site selection consultants, as well as an expanded marketing program for in-state partners. Topping it off, Site Selection magazine once again named the state as the nation's best business climate. With continued leadership from Governor Bev Perdue and N.C. Department of Commerce Secretary Keith Crisco, along with the collaborative efforts of every member of the state's economic development community, the outlook for 2011 looks bright.     DAVID NORLAND Composer David Norland is an English composer living and working in Los Angeles. Most recently he composed the score to the current HBO film My Dinner With Herve (HBO 2018) starring Peter Dinklage and Jamie Dornan. His work with Emmy-winning director Sacha Gervasi includes the award-winning documentary Anvil! The Story Of Anvil. Anvil! won the IDA Best Feature award, an Emmy award, the Indie Spirit Best Documentary award, and numerous other Best Documentary awards around the world. His most recent collaboration with Sacha was on November Criminals (Sony 2017) starring Chloe Moretz and Ansel Elgort. Since 2010, David has composed much of the music for USA broadcasting giant ABC’s primetime news documentaries. His work for ABC is broadcast in the USA and around the world on a daily basis. A chorister from an early age, David was singing daily in Westminster Abbey, was a boy treble in The Elizabethan Consort of Voices and sang in a reputable touring choral group during the time. Having a love for choral music, David also finds time to write for choir. In addition to composition & choral music, David was a successful recording artist and record producer. His electronic band Solar Twins was signed by Madonna to Maverick Records and rode high on the USA dance charts, and his record writing, production and mixing work with Jamaican legends Sly and Robbie has been nominated for a Grammy. Since its inception, the Army has relied unofficially on soldiers’ wives’ contributions to the success of their husbands’ careers in a two-for-one career pattern—two workers for one paycheck. The Army made such expectations official when in 1988 it began to require volunteer labor to run each unit’s FRG. The Army tasks FRGs with connecting members to resources and relaying official information to soldiers’ family members. These support groups also serve a vital socializing function, though not all soldiers’ spouses participate in the information-dispensing and community-building groups.

    42 Paradigma, Jurnal Kajian Budaya Representation of Latinas as Maids on Devious Maids, Fitria Afrianty Sudirman 43 REPRESENTATION OF LATINAS1 AS MAIDS ON DEVIOUS MAIDS (2013) Fitria Afrianty Sudirman Abstract This article aims to analyze the representation of Latinas as maids by examining the first season of US television drama comedy, Devious Maids. The show has been a controversy inside and outside Latina community since it presents the lives of five Latinas working as maids in Beverly Hills that appears to reinforce the negative stereotypes of Latinas. However, a close reading on scenes by using character analysis on two Latina characters shows that the characters break stereotypes in various ways. The show gives visibility to the Latinas by putting them as main characters and portraying them as progressive and independent women who also refuse the notion of white supremacy. Keywords Latina, stereotypes, television, Devious Maids. INTRODUCTION Latin Americans have grown to be the largest minority group in the United States (US). According to the 2010 US Census, those identifying themselves as Hispanic/Latino Americans increased by 43% from the 2000 US Census, comprising 16% of the U.S total population. The bureau even expected that by 2050, the Hispanic/Latino population in the U.S. will be 132.8 million or 30% of the total population, which means one out of three Americans is a Hispanic/Latino. However, the increasing number of Latin Americans does not seem to go along with the portrayal of them in the US television. Research shows that they remain significantly under-represented on TV, only 1%-3% of the primetime TV population (Mastro-Morawitz, 2005).
