The 7th Asia-Pacific TV Festival of Songs â“ âœABU TV Song Festivalâ, a competition similar to the Eurovision Song Contest, was held in Ashgabat. Starting from the enchanting performance of the Turkmen dance group, the concert was broadcast in more than 20 countries around the world. The national artists of Turkmenistan Gulshat Gurdova and Parakhat Amandurdyev, well-known pop singers of the country Myahri Pirguliyeva, Begench Charyev, as well as singers from Afghanistan, Indonesia, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkey, the Republic of Korea, India, the Maldives, Viet... This years ABU TV Song Festival will be held on 28th October 2015 in Istanbul Congress Center, Turkey.     ABU TV Song Festival available for broadcast The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union has announced the conditions under which broadcasters around the world will be able to screen the region’s newest international TV song festival. The inaugural ABU Television Song Festival gala concert showcasing up to 11 of the best acts in the Asia-Pacific will take place in Seoul, Korea, on 14 October during the Union’s 49th General Assembly. Korean host broadcaster KBS will record the two-hour concert in KBS Hall and make it available to broadcasters around the world. Ms Hanizah Hamzah, Senior Executive (TV) at the ABU says participating ABU members can screen the show for free. “Non-participating ABU member organisations or non-member organisations throughout the world may broadcast the show after the participating ABU member organisation in the same country or territory completes its initial broadcast,” she says. My research shows that in contemporary Vietnam, the lives and musical activities of the Hmong are constantly changing, and their musical traditions are thoroughly integrated with and impacted by modernity. Presentational performances and high fidelity recordings are becoming more prominent in this cultural sphere, increasing numbers are turning to predominantly foreign- produced Hmong popular music, and elements of Hmong traditional music have been appropriated and reinvented as part of Vietnam’s national musical heritage and tourism industry. Depending on the context, these musics can be used to either support the political ideologies of the Party or enable individuals to resist them.

Kinzer Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Dr. Christina Sunardi Music In this dissertation, I show how Malay-identified performing arts are used to fold in Malay Muslim identity into the urban milieu, not as an alternative to Kuala Lumpur’s contemporary cultural trajectory, but as an integrated part of it. I found this identity negotiation occurring through secular performance traditions of a particular instrument known as the gambus (lute), an Arabic instrument with strong ties to Malay history and trade. During my fieldwork, I discovered that the gambus in Malaysia is a potent symbol through which Malay Muslim identity is negotiated based on various local and transnational conceptions of Islamic modernity. My dissertation explores the material and virtual pathways that converge a number of historical, geographic, and socio-political sites—including the National Museum and the National Conservatory for the Arts, iv Culture, and Heritage—in my experiences studying the gambus and the wider transmission of muzik Melayu (Malay music) in urban Malaysia. I argue that the gambus complicates articulations of Malay identity through multiple agentic forces, including people (musicians, teachers, etc.), the gambus itself (its materials and iconicity), various governmental and non-governmental institutions, and wider oral, aural, and material transmission processes.
