ABU TV Song Festival Available for Broadcast
ABU TV Song Festival available for broadcast The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union has announced the conditions under which broadcasters around the world will be able to screen the region’s newest international TV song festival. The inaugural ABU Television Song Festival gala concert showcasing up to 11 of the best acts in the Asia-Pacific will take place in Seoul, Korea, on 14 October during the Union’s 49th General Assembly. Korean host broadcaster KBS will record the two-hour concert in KBS Hall and make it available to broadcasters around the world. Ms Hanizah Hamzah, Senior Executive (TV) at the ABU says participating ABU members can screen the show for free. “Non-participating ABU member organisations or non-member organisations throughout the world may broadcast the show after the participating ABU member organisation in the same country or territory completes its initial broadcast,” she says. A fee and agreement negotiated with the ABU will cover all kinds of television broadcasting, including terrestrial, cable, and satellite, for non-downloadable live streaming on the Internet transmitted simultaneously with television broadcast, and also for the non-downloadable, live streaming, non-profit catch-up services online. My research shows that in contemporary Vietnam, the lives and musical activities of the Hmong are constantly changing, and their musical traditions are thoroughly integrated with and impacted by modernity. Presentational performances and high fidelity recordings are becoming more prominent in this cultural sphere, increasing numbers are turning to predominantly foreign- produced Hmong popular music, and elements of Hmong traditional music have been appropriated and reinvented as part of Vietnam’s national musical heritage and tourism industry. Depending on the context, these musics can be used to either support the political ideologies of the Party or enable individuals to resist them.

Kinzer Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Dr. Christina Sunardi Music In this dissertation, I show how Malay-identified performing arts are used to fold in Malay Muslim identity into the urban milieu, not as an alternative to Kuala Lumpur’s contemporary cultural trajectory, but as an integrated part of it. I found this identity negotiation occurring through secular performance traditions of a particular instrument known as the gambus (lute), an Arabic instrument with strong ties to Malay history and trade. During my fieldwork, I discovered that the gambus in Malaysia is a potent symbol through which Malay Muslim identity is negotiated based on various local and transnational conceptions of Islamic modernity. My dissertation explores the material and virtual pathways that converge a number of historical, geographic, and socio-political sites—including the National Museum and the National Conservatory for the Arts, iv Culture, and Heritage—in my experiences studying the gambus and the wider transmission of muzik Melayu (Malay music) in urban Malaysia. I argue that the gambus complicates articulations of Malay identity through multiple agentic forces, including people (musicians, teachers, etc.), the gambus itself (its materials and iconicity), various governmental and non-governmental institutions, and wider oral, aural, and material transmission processes.

She was last seen with 28-year-old Tatsuya Ichihashi and her body was discovered on the balcony of his flat in Tokyo. He remains the Japanese police's only suspect and as we go to print, has still not been found. In support of Lindsay’s family and the Japanese police in their hunt for this man, Being A Broad has launched a t-shirt campaign. We hope that enough people—men and women, Japanese and foreign—will wear this t-shirt or one of our bags, so that this man’s face is seen by as many people as possible in Japan, on a daily basis. The Japanese words roughly translate to “Until this man is caught, I won’t sleep at night”, which can be interpreted in many ways: perhaps you are that bit more nervous at night knowing this man has not been caught; perhaps you are a father and worried about your daughter; perhaps you are a husband and worried about your wife; perhaps you want to make a statement against all violent crime against women.
