In addition to grants to organizations, Endowment funds also go to individuals through fellowships and to public arts agencies and arts service organizations, sometimes in the form of cooperative agreements. Grant money authorized by Congress comes to the Endowment as Program Funds, Treasury Funds and Challenge Grant Funds. Most direct grants to organizations and individuals come from Program Funds. Most grants to organizations must be matched at least dollar-for-dollar with funds from other sources. Grants to individuals do not require matching funds. Treasury Fund grants, awards designed to help applicants increase or sustain non-Federal contributions, generally must be matched with at least three non-Federal dollars for each Federal dollar. All awards using Treasury Funds are marked TF in this report. Because applicants must certify the match before Treasury Funds are released, each year a few grants are awarded but not obligated. All of the carry-over obligations from previous years are listed at the end of each category. The Treasury Fund grants that were awarded during Fiscal Year 1994, but not released, are marked with a dagger (~). Challenge Grant Funds must be matched at least three-to-one. We list both the amounts awarded and the amounts obligated during Fiscal Year 1994. The Dance Program is committed to advancing high quality dance artistry which cuts across a broad spectrum of aesthetic and cultural perspectives. This project investigates the potential of self-directed, technologically mediated composition as a means of reconfiguring gender stereotypes within the operatic tradition. This practice confronts two primary stereotypes: the positioning of female performing bodies within narratives of violence and the absence of women from authorial roles that construct and regulate the operatic tradition. The Pomegranate Cycle redresses these stereotypes by presenting a new narrative trajectory of healing for its central character, and by placing the singer inside the role of composer and producer. During the twentieth and early twenty-first century, operatic and classical music institutions have resisted incorporating works of living composers into their repertory.

    ABU TV Song Festival available for broadcast The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union has announced the conditions under which broadcasters around the world will be able to screen the region’s newest international TV song festival. The inaugural ABU Television Song Festival gala concert showcasing up to 11 of the best acts in the Asia-Pacific will take place in Seoul, Korea, on 14 October during the Union’s 49th General Assembly. Korean host broadcaster KBS will record the two-hour concert in KBS Hall and make it available to broadcasters around the world. Ms Hanizah Hamzah, Senior Executive (TV) at the ABU says participating ABU members can screen the show for free. “Non-participating ABU member organisations or non-member organisations throughout the world may broadcast the show after the participating ABU member organisation in the same country or territory completes its initial broadcast,” she says. A fee and agreement negotiated with the ABU will cover all kinds of television broadcasting, including terrestrial, cable, and satellite, for non-downloadable live streaming on the Internet transmitted simultaneously with television broadcast, and also for the non-downloadable, live streaming, non-profit catch-up services online. Their Cymbeline, directed by Mark Lamos (who later moved to opera), ended with an unforgettable scene between Imogen and her husband: “Why did you throw your wedded lady from you? Think that you are upon a rock and throw me again.” His reply, “Hang there like fruit, my soul, till the tree die.” This exchange touched me deeply and really convinced me to try some music for the songs that appear in the play as well as this beautiful expression of love. I noticed the familiar “Hark, hark the lark” was sung by the frightful Cloten.
