THE SECRETARY-GENERAL 28 December 1999 Excellency, I have the honour to inform you that I have appointed Mr. Oluyemi Adeniji (Nigeria) as my Special Representative for Sierra Leone. As you may be aware, he has a distinguished diplomatic career and has served most recently as my Special Representative for the Central African Republic where his contribution to consolidating peace in that country is widely recognized. He has already taken up his new position in Freetown as of 11 December and he is authorized to take up with Your Excellency all matters concerning the efforts of the United Nations pursuant to the Lome Peace Agreement of 7 July 1999, including the deployment and functions of the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) in accordance with Security Council resolution 1270 (1999) of 22 October 1999. I am convinced that, under the leadership of Mr. Adeniji, UNAMSIL can assist in furthering the peace process in Sierra Leone. Accordingly, 1 would be grateful if your Government could extend to him all necessary support and cooperation. Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration. Kofi A.
