Transcription Gout Four ounces leaves of speedwell Two ounces alder Bark -- 3do wintris bark ½ pd angelica root 4 ounces Fennel Bark boil these together in 2 gal[ons] of soft water, strain the decoction in a earthen Pan, let it stand all night to settle. Pour it off in the morning and disolve 3.tb treble refined sugar; Two p.d virgin honey – gently simmered into a thin syrup – a larger teacup full, night & morning – to each dose or time of taking, a teaspoonful of Dr. Huxham’s essense of antimony Annotations wintris bark / winter's bark "The pungent aromatic bark of a South American evergreen shrub or small tree, Drimys winteri" according to the OED. The 1747 British Dispensatory, however, specifies Canella alba or "white Cinnamon" as a medicinal ingredient, noting that it is "improperly called winter's bark" (5). Dr. Huxham’s essense of Antimony John Huxham published Medical and Chemical Observations about Antimony in 1756. R. Brookes' The General Practice of Physic (1754) indicates that Huxham preferred for the treatment of rheumatic pains the essence of antimony, "which is nothing else but emetic Wine made with Glass of Antimony, with the Addition of a little spicy Stomachic" (61). angelica root The root of the angelica archangelica plant used to treat a variety of afflictions. University of Tasmania HOBART March 1996 This thesis may be made available for loan and limited copying in accordance with the Copyright Act 1968 University of Tasmania HOBART March 1996 Abstract This thesis examines several aspects of the preparation, extraction and analysis of solvent soluble compounds from leaf material of Tasmannia lanceolata and reports a preliminary survey of extracts of some members of the natural population of the species in Tasmania. A major constituent of these extracts, polygodial, was shown to be stored within specialised idioblastic structures scattered throughout the mesophyll, and characterised by distinctive size and shape, and a thickened wall. The contents of these cells were sampled directly, analysed and compared with the composition of extracts derived from ground, dry whole leaf. This result was supported by spectroscopic analysis of undisturbed oil cells in whole leaf tissue. In a two year field trial, the progressive accumulation of a number of leaf extract constituents (linalool, cubebene, caryophyllene, germacrene D, bicyclogermacrene, cadina-1,4 - diene, aristolone and polygodial) during the growth flush was followed by a slow decline during the subsequent dormant season.

The 5th assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change explicitly calls upon nations to enhance C-stock accounting and mitigate losses of global forest C sinks, which inherently will require more accurate and higher spatial resolution carbon accounting. Monitoring and predicting how disturbances, such as invasive species, influence forest C stocks and the transfer of C from live to dead pools remains a high priority both in the scientific and policy communities. We documented the effects of invasive North American beavers (Castor canadensis) on C-sequestration of riparian Nothofagus forests in Tierra del Fuego, Chile. Our paired plot sampling design quantified significant losses from beaver invasion in total aboveground, live standing, dead standing, and dead and downed C stocks (P <0.001,pairedt tests). We extrapolated stand-level C losses to the entire study area using a Maxent habitat suitability model and estimated that 1.177 (± 0.103) Tg C would be lost if all of the predicted 18,384 ha of invasible habitat (14% of the total forested area) were colonized by beavers. These results document the impacts of invasive mammals on large terrestrial C sinks and highlight the need for understanding the magnitude of such effects across both landscape- and regional-scales.

[email protected] ABSTRACT Phylogenetic relationships among Chilean species of Drimys as well as D. granadensis from Central America and D. angustifolia from Brazil were reconstructed using internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal DNA and a parsimony analysis. Our results at the family level were congruent with previous phylogenetic hypotheses. Molecular data indicate that the Juan Fernandez Island endemic D. confertifolia diverged early in the evolution of the genus, and it is not closely related to the continental species D. winteri, as might be expected on the basis of morphology and biogeography. The ITS phylogeny also provides general support for a recent distribution of species on the western side of the Andes Mountains; the only exception is D. andina, which may represent an early divergence that occurred just before the Quaternary. The only species examined from east of the Andes, D. angustifolia, also represents an early divergence in the genus, which is in agreement with the ancient pollen record in Argentinean Patagonia and the lack of Tertiary records in Chile.
