The reports may be cited in publications but their manuscript status should be clearly indicated. , 1, 1 l 11 INTRODUCTION In recent years the Science Section of the Nova Scotia Museum has r ecei ved increasingly frequent requests from government and private agencies , and from individuals, for information on plant and animal species or communiti es which are of exceptional scientific value or interest and which may be affected by various kinds of proposed development. These requests fall i nto two categories : information on species or communities occurring at a particular location, and information on the distribution and vulnerability of a species or group of species throughout the province as a whole. Requests in the first category generally cannot be anticipated, and the Science Section r esponds to each one, using a Locality File listing its biological collections by county and location, supplemented by special knowledge of the staff when possible. -

Blue-Spotted Salamander
Species Status Assessment Class: Amphibia Family: Ambystomatidae Scientific Name: Ambystoma laterale Common Name: Blue-spotted salamander Species synopsis: The blue-spotted salamander has the northernmost distribution of any Ambystoma species, occurring in east-central North America as far north as Labrador, with its distribution dipping southward into the northeastern United States only as far as northern New Jersey. In New York, this salamander occurs in a patchy distribution outside of high elevation areas; its occurrence on Long Island is only in the farthest eastern reaches. Blue-spotted salamander habitat is the moist forest floor of deciduous or mixed woodlands near ephemeral bodies of water. Reliable population trends are not available for this salamander. Hybridization occurs between blue-spotted salamander and Jefferson salamander (A. jeffersonianum). Broadly referred to as the Jefferson complex, the variety of hybrids includes up to five different chromosomal combinations. Some of the hybrids have been called Tremblay’s salamander or silvery salamander, but most references are to “Jefferson complex.” This unusual situation has lead to difficulty in defining the distribution of blue-spotted salamander and Jefferson salamander, the hybrids of which are very difficult to distinguish, typically, without genetic testing in conjunction with their appearance. In Connecticut, the blue-spotted diploid and the blue-spotted complex have been listed individually, as Threatened and Special Concern respectively but no other state or province has made this distinction in listing status. 1 I. Natural Heritage Copperhead & Endangered Species Agkistrodon contortrix Program State Status: Endangered www.mass.gov/nhesp Federal Status: None Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife DESCRIPTION: Copperheads get their name due to their solid, relatively unmarked, coppery-colored head resembling the color of an old copper coin. As with all pit vipers, Copperheads have broad, triangularly shaped heads, with a distinct narrowing just behind the head. The eyes have vertically elliptical (catlike) pupils. There is a very thin line on each side of the face that separates the richer copper color of the top of the head from the lighter color of the lip area. The iris of the eye is pale gold, and the pupil is dark. On the body there is a series of dark brown to reddish, hourglass-shaped, cross bands. These are narrow in the middle of the body and broad to the sides. The ground color ranges from beige to tan. Body markings are continuous over the entire length of the body, including the tail. Young snakes are replicas of adults, except that the body has an overtone of light grey and the tip of the tail is yellow. Species Status Assessment Class: Amphibia Family: Ambystomidae Scientific Name: Ambystoma jeffersonianum Common Name: Jefferson salamander Species synopsis: The distribution of the Jefferson salamander is restricted to the northeastern quarter of the United States extending as far to the southwest as Illinois and Kentucky; the species is represented in Canada only in a small area of southern Ontario. The habitat includes upland deciduous or mixed woodlands as well as bottomland forests adjacent to disturbed and agricultural lands. Breeding occurs in temporary ponds or semi-permanent wetlands (Gibbs et al. 2007). Hybridization occurs between the Jefferson salamander and the blue-spotted salamander (A. laterale). Broadly referred to as the Jefferson complex, the variety of hybrids includes up to five different chromosomal combinations. Some of the hybrids have been called Tremblay’s salamander or silvery salamander, but most references are to “Jefferson complex.” This unusual situation has lead to difficulty in defining the distribution of blue-spotted salamander and Jefferson salamander, the hybrids of which are very difficult to distinguish, typically, without genetic testing in conjunction with their appearance. Reproductive Biology of Ambystoma Salamanders in the Southeastern United States
Herpetology Notes, volume 8: 347-356 (2015) (published online on 16 June 2015) Reproductive biology of Ambystoma salamanders in the southeastern United States Brad M. Glorioso1,*, J. Hardin Waddle1 and Jeromi Hefner2 Abstract. Reproductive aspects of Ambystoma salamanders were investigated at sites in Louisiana (2010–12) and Mississippi (2013). Three species occurred at the Louisiana site, Spotted Salamander (A. maculatum), Marbled Salamander (A. opacum), and Mole Salamander (A. talpoideum), whereas only Spotted Salamanders were studied at the Mississippi site. A total of 162 and 71 egg masses of Spotted Salamanders were examined at the Louisiana and Mississippi sites, respectively. Significantly more Spotted Salamander eggs per egg mass were observed at the Mississippi site (x̄ = 78.2) than the Louisiana site (x̄ = 53.8; P < 0.001). The mean snout–vent length of female Spotted Salamanders at the Mississippi site (82.9 mm) was significantly larger than the Louisiana site (76.1 mm; P < 0.001). Opaque Spotted Salamander egg masses were not found at the Mississippi site, but accounted for 11% of examined egg masses at the Louisiana site. The mean number of eggs per egg mass at the Louisiana site did not differ between opaque (47.3) and clear (54.6) egg masses (P = 0.21). A total of 47 egg masses of the Mole Salamander were examined, with a mean number of 6.7 embryos per mass. Twenty-three individual nests of the Marbled Salamander were found either under or in decaying logs in the dry pond basins. There was no difference between the mean numbers of eggs per mass of attended nests (93.0) versus those that were discovered unattended (86.6; P = 0.67). -

Natural Heritage Marbled Salamander & Endangered Species Ambystoma opacum Program State Status: Threatened www.mass.gov/nhesp Federal Status: None Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife DESCRIPTION: The Marbled Salamander is a stout, medium-sized salamander with a stocky body, short limbs, and a broad, rounded snout. Dorsal coloration is black, marked with bold, variably-shaped grayish to whitish crossbands that create a “marbled” pattern from head to tail. Lateral and ventral coloration is uniformly dark gray to black. Banding on the mid- to upper dorsum tends to be bright white in mature males and dull gray in mature females. Banding on the tail can be white in both sexes, or gray in females. Total length is 3–5 inches. A dark blue to black dorsum with brilliant sky-blue spots or specks on the lower sides of the body makes the coloration of this species quite distinct and reminiscent of antique blue enamel pots and dishware. The ventral surface is a paler grey with black pigmentation surrounding the vent. The tail is long and laterally compressed; averaging 44% of the total body length.
